An analysis is mainly given retrospectively at the end of the history of the BYU involvement phase of the project.

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow Jan 1985

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow

Theses and Dissertations

LDS doctrine establishes three courses of action in conflict resolution: a) selective pacifism, b) action as proxy for God as prescribed under the doctrine of continuous revelation and c) absolute pacifism. Of these three, only absolute and selective pacifism are of practical use to the modern member of the LDS Church. Of the remaining two, government political decisions and technological momentum have moved current U.S. defense strategy and weaponry away from a defensive to an offense posture, thus invalidating the case of the selective pacifist and leaving only the absolutist's stand. Despite this development, however, the number of vocal pacifists …

Chapter I: Emigration And Immigration Jan 1985

Chapter I: Emigration And Immigration

The Bridge

The description of an immigrant group begins in the place of origin, where thousands of individuals chose to abandon their old homes and build new lives in America. In the mid-nineteenth century, this decision required agonizing deliberation by people who knew little about America. Few had traveled abroad. Few had American relatives to provide first-hand accounts of life in the New World.

Conclusion: Chicago And The Evolution Of The Danish Community Jan 1985

Conclusion: Chicago And The Evolution Of The Danish Community

The Bridge

As contemporaries and historians noted, the development of the ethnic American depended upon a unique blend of two cultures. This study has illustrated that fact, beginning with the sources of immigration. We found that immigration resulted from a complex interplay of European and American factors, which influenced not only the immigrant and his community, but the old culture as well. For example, the existence of plentiful American farmland led to an immigration to American farms. As American produce then rose in volume, more was exported to Europe, contributing to an agricultural crisis in Denmark. That in turn generated a new …

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg Jan 1985

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg

The Bridge

That was not so bad, and then, Dagmar was even a queen. I have done that which is worse. I once stole, on a late winter night in Chicago, a pioneer cow with all accessories from Christian Bay. Then I sold the stolen goods to a newspaper in Denmark and got c. 60 kroner out of it. How my conscience has fared since then I will not here relate. I am a Danish Lutheran and I do not confess in a catholic confession booth, and much less would I confess in the modern protestant manner, publicly to Mrs. Somebody in …

Warren Stone Snow, A Man In Between: The Biography Of A Mormon Defender, John A. Peterson Jan 1985

Warren Stone Snow, A Man In Between: The Biography Of A Mormon Defender, John A. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Warren Stone Snow was an early convert to the LDS church who during the Church's first four decades was often involved in defensive roles as Mormonism encountered various conflicts on the American frontier. While he protected the lives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and defended Illinois Saints from houseburning mobs and took a leading role in the Battle of Nauvoo, his greatest defensive contributions took place after the Mormons settled in Utah. As commander of the Sanpete Military District, he was one of the leading figures in Mormon defensive efforts during the Utah War in 1857 and later as …

The Mormon Waldensians, Diane Stokoe Jan 1985

The Mormon Waldensians, Diane Stokoe

Theses and Dissertations

The Waldensians are ancient Protestant Sectarians who have inhabited the Piedmont Region of the Cottian Alps for centuries. They claim to be the oldest Protestant Church in the world. Having survived 700 years of persecution, the Waldensians finally achieved religious liberty in 1848. Two years later Mormon church leader Lorenzo Snow and some other Elders entered the Protestant valleys on a proselyting mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One hundred-eighty-seven Waldensians were converted to Mormonism. Twenty years later, one-third of these Mormon Waldensians had been excommunicated, one-third had emigrated to Utah and one-third became inactive or …

Elder Stephen L. Richards On Peace And War: An Examination Of Elder Richards' Views On The Causes Of War And His Prescription For Peace, Based On The Analytical Framework Contained In Kenneth N. Waltz' Man, The State And War, Gordon John Stirling Jan 1985

Elder Stephen L. Richards On Peace And War: An Examination Of Elder Richards' Views On The Causes Of War And His Prescription For Peace, Based On The Analytical Framework Contained In Kenneth N. Waltz' Man, The State And War, Gordon John Stirling

Theses and Dissertations

In Man, the State and War, Kenneth N. Waltz claims that for a peace prescription to be valid, it must be based on a proper view of the causes of war. Waltz analyzes the validity of three basic causes of war: man himself, the characteristics of the nation-state, and the international system.

I have examined the views of Elder Stephen L Richards on peace and war in the context of the Waltz framework. Elders Richards believed that the failings of men were the primary causes of war. His prescription for peace was widespread acceptance of the Gospel. He disagreed …

Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood Jan 1985

Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood

Theses and Dissertations

Whether in its earliest or its most recent formulations, Mormon millennialism is essentially premillennial. At no time can it be considered postmillennial or a millennial. Along with a millenarian ideology, Latter-day Saints of the 1830s maintained a polarized perception of society and salvation. Apparently, it was not until the 1840s that Mormons began to explore the millennial implications of the "Vision" of the three degrees of glory. Other strands of thought unique to the earliest years of Mormonism are also considered. Furthermore, it is shown how millenarianism informed Mormon perceptions of Native Americans, missionary work, persecution, the Apostasy, and Zion. …

Jens Munk: The Story Of A Sailor Who Embraced His Fate, Inga W. Wiehl Jan 1985

Jens Munk: The Story Of A Sailor Who Embraced His Fate, Inga W. Wiehl

The Bridge

"Jens Munk was one of the intrepid sixteenth-century explorers who navigated the Arctic seas with inadequate ships, faulty charts and primitive instruments. He was also one of the few who survived the arduous search for the Northwest Passage, who reached Hudson Bay in 1619, wintered there, buried most of his crew, and by a supreme effort of will and skill made the voyage home with the two crewmen left to him. "

Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick Jan 1985

Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick

Theses and Dissertations

Much of Utah's history is the story of the relationship of humans and the land. Human perceptions of Utah's land have changed over time and affected the way it has been used. The homestead movement was an important phase in the use of Utah's land. Through federal settlement acts many Utahns obtained title to public land. This study is an attempt to learn more about the relationship between women and the land and about the lives of women in Utah.
The study is based on Utah land records from 1869-1934. Most homesteading activity in Utah took place during this period. …

Language Attrition In French-Speaking Missionaries, Peggy S. Mauerman Jan 1985

Language Attrition In French-Speaking Missionaries, Peggy S. Mauerman

Theses and Dissertations

Patterns of language loss were analyzed in twenty-five returned French-speaking missionaries who had spent from one-and-a-half to two years in a French-speaking environment and who had returned to the United States from four months to five years ago. The subjects were given a written vocabulary test and an oral interview to determine their proficiency in the language. The results of this study showed that the patterns or change in particular language forms varied according to each language form. Some categories showed an obvious pattern of loss while some varied from year to year, with no pattern of any kind in …

King Alfred And The Latin Manuscripts Of Gregory's Regula Pastoralis, Richard W. Clement Jan 1985

King Alfred And The Latin Manuscripts Of Gregory's Regula Pastoralis, Richard W. Clement

Quidditas

King Alfred's translation of Pope Gregory the Great's Liber Regulae Pastoralis has long been recognized by students of Anglo-Saxon literature as one of the earliest and greatest monuments of Old English prose. Alfred's first translation, commonly referred to as the Pastoral Care, has been the focus of much scholarly attention by historians, philologists, and literary critics. Historians have seized upon the work more for Alfred's two prefaces and what they tell us in Ninth-century England than for the translation itself, but nonetheless the mode of translation is not without its biographical and historical implications. Philologists on the other hand …
