Putnam On 'Empirical Objects', Gorden Steinhoff
Putnam On 'Empirical Objects', Gorden Steinhoff
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Putnam claims that the objects we experience are “mind-dependent” and “theory-dependent”. He also writes that they are “constructed within our theories”. It is difficult to say what he means by these claims. I conclude that, according to Putnam, “empirical objects” do not really exist. But I attempt to show the sense in which he can be considered a realist about these objects. Putnam has adopted an idealism which allows for the correctness of realist claims within appropriate contexts. I also discuss Putnam's solution to the problem of how we manage to refer to “empirical objects”. I argue that this solution, …
The Task Of Integration: A Modest Proposal, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger
The Task Of Integration: A Modest Proposal, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger
Faculty Publications
This article examines the issue of integration and proposes a typology of four different kinds of integration: interdisciplinary, intradisciplinary, faith-praxis, and experiential integration. The elaboration of the nature of each type of integration includes specific implications for Christians. The proposal is intended to clarify the integration discussion and stimulate dialogue on these important issues.

Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem
Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Virtually all criticism concerning Vidas Sêcas includes a discussion of its multiple point of view format and its use of free indirect style. Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem
Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.
