Like many things in 2020, the university’s cherished annual holiday event will look a bit different. Christmas from DePaul is going virtual. To give the DePaul community a behind the scenes look at this year’s event is its producers, Tony Peluso and Jamie Davis. On this episode, they talk about the challenges they faced due to COVID-19, explain how DePaul’s campus was used to help tell the story of Jesus’ birth and share how DePaul’s students were involved in creating this year’s event, in front of and behind the camera.

Earth Needs Help, Rhiannon C. Barto
Earth Needs Help, Rhiannon C. Barto
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Humans destroy earth by polluting the atmosphere and wiping out other living things. Climate change is a human created problem that is increasing the rate at which the damage is occurring. The temperature is increasing at the fastest rate that it has in 10,000 years. With change happening this fast, it is hard for nature and animals, including ourselves, to adapt. Climate change is one of the biggest things causing this change and it is crucial to take action before it is too late. We need to stop deforestation, stop CO2 emissions, and stop the use of fossil fuels. The …

English Datasets
This dataset documents Edward P. Jones’s consistent focus on Washington D.C. as a setting in his two short story collections. During the Fall semester of 2017, in the graduate course ENGL 5324, my students and I used digital tools and performed close reads to extract actual locations in Washington, D.C. mentioned across Jones’s two collections of short stories. We also verified information by adding zip codes and actual address to landmarks and locations referenced in the stories. These locations help us to chart the movement and locations of characters.

300 Key African American Literary Texts., Kenton Rambsy, Howard Rambsy
English Datasets
This dataset is comprised of 300 African American novels, essays, poems, autobiographies, slave narratives, and short stories. Inspired by Metacaon.org, a project that weights texts based primarily on the number of citations that works have received in scholarly journals. The dataset draws on five databases: JSTOR, Project Muse, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and the online archives for The New York Times archives to determine the scholarly significance of Black authored texts primarily by the number of times they are cited in scholarly contexts.

Racial and ethnic diversity within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields remains low, and many scientists and researchers are seeking solutions to help address racism in their workplaces. To help, assistant professor and environmental scientist in the Department of Environmental Science and Studies for DePaul’s College of Science and Health, Dr. Bala Chaudhary, collaborated with another researcher of color to create the “Ten Simple Rules for Building an Antiracist Lab.”

Handel’S Messiah: Stepping Stones Between Now And Then, Ariela Policastro, Emma Boze, Nathan Maras
2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"
Original style and intent of period music can often be lost as modern performers attempt to recreate a centuries-old composition. In this paper Messiah by George Frideric Handel is discussed, offering insight in how to perform this piece while still honoring the full integrity of what the composer intended. Through an examination of past and current performances and opinions, it becomes clear that there are many distinct differences in ways this oratorio has been performed including stylistic choices, instrumentation, religious affiliation, and more.

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown
Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown
History Faculty Research
Andrew Dickson White is not considered a canonical author in the French Revolution's historiography, but rather is known as the founding president of both Cornell University and the American Historical Association (AHA). His best-known published historical writings, when referenced at all, are often derided. Yet in his intellectually formative years, as an earnest abolitionist and amibtious Republican, eager to enter the arena of American political life and anticipating what he would later call "the great revolution" of the Civil War, White made the topic his central academic pursuit - and effectively invented a distinctly American tradition of historiography.

The Symbolism of Women’s Suffrage Dress: Suits of subversion or paragons of persuasion? I am a professional apparel designer who has worked both in the clothing industry as well as in academia. My passion is creating patterns which I then use to cut and construct amazing designs. Recently I began researching historic garment design and construction which led me to creating historically inspired recreations of era specific designs. This new-found creative outlet results in the additional benefit of being able to be used for educational purposes by bringing historic dress alive for our students. The research behind these designs as …
Undressing For Redress: The Significance Of Nigerian Women’S Naked Protests, Bright Alozie
Undressing For Redress: The Significance Of Nigerian Women’S Naked Protests, Bright Alozie
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Social media went abuzz on July 23, 2020, when hundreds of women – mostly naked – staged a protest in the northwestern state of Kaduna, Nigeria. Wailing and rolling on the ground, they protested at the killing of people in ongoing attacks on their community.
The protesters, mostly mothers, demanded justice and called on the government, security agencies and international community to intervene.
Such naked protests are not new in Nigeria. Traditionally, among the Igbo and Yoruba of Nigeria, stripping naked signifies a curse against those targeted. Sometimes, mothers strip naked to put a curse on their truant sons or …
Inventing America's First Immigration Crisis: Political Nativism In The Antebellum West, Luke Ritter
Inventing America's First Immigration Crisis: Political Nativism In The Antebellum West, Luke Ritter
History
Why have Americans expressed concern about immigration at some times but not at others? In pursuit of an answer, this book examines America’s first nativist movement, which responded to the rapid influx of 4.2 million immigrants between 1840 and 1860 and culminated in the dramatic rise of the National American Party. As previous studies have focused on the coasts, historians have not yet completely explained why westerners joined the ranks of the National American, or “Know Nothing,” Party or why the nation’s bloodiest anti-immigrant riots erupted in western cities—namely Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis. In focusing on the antebellum …

How Igbo Women Used Petitions To Influence British Authorities During Colonial Rule, Bright Alozie
How Igbo Women Used Petitions To Influence British Authorities During Colonial Rule, Bright Alozie
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Selected petitions and written correspondence between Igbo women and British officials between 1892 and 1960 shed fresh light on how women navigated male-dominated colonial institutions and structures of the time.
African women acted in varied and complex ways to the situations they found themselves in. This ranged from subtle to overt opposition, and sometimes violent resistance.
One response was through petition writing as women took to the pen to articulate their concerns. In my research, I examined several petitions written by Igbo women to British officials during the colonial period. I found that petition writing was part of the complex …

(Fun)Ction: Developing Games From A Narrative Standpoint, Julian Barocas
English Summer Fellows
My goal with this project has been to deepen my understanding of why people play games, how to make games narratively compelling, and what technical methods are effective in play. This has allowed me to investigate both the technical, scholarly assessments of board game dynamics while also exploring their real-world applications, successes, and weaknesses. Building on my research, my project has culminated in a full prototype of an original board game that has both narrative structure and an engaging gameplay structure. I have also produced a reflection paper on the experience and an annotated bibliography of my research texts and …
