Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

During the Holocaust, same-sex desiring men were persecuted alongside Jews, political prisoners, and other minority groups. The punishments that same-sex desiring men faced were directed at the act of homosexuality instead of the identity of homosexual. Incarceration in Nazi camps for same-sex desiring men included sexual violence and an attempt to convert these men to a heterosexual lifestyle. This research explores memoirs by homosexual holocaust survivors, including Heinz Heger and Pierre Seel, as well as experiences with same-sex desiring men written by a communist prisoner of Sachsenhausen, Harry Naujoks.

Finding Eternal Life at the Intersection of Bergson and Proust is a research project that explores the relationship of spirit and matter attempting to answer the question: Does the Proust Effect prove humans have an eternal soul? The Proust Effect is defined as “the vivid reliving of events from the past through sensory stimuli” based on a passage in the novel Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust. Applying quantum mechanics to Proust’s themes of time and memory and philosopher Henri Bergson’s studies of matter and spirit, one can examine how the body and soul connect. Sediment loads in stream systems play a big role in how overall runoff behaves. Streams naturally transport sediment at various ratios depending on precipitation. When vegetation is removed in upstream environments, sediment loads on streams increase. Sudden increases of sediments in streams can cause many issues, such as flooding or stream re-direction. In Morehead, KY, large-scale logging operations on the ridge above Knapp Avenue and on the ridge above the north end of Allen Avenue have caused increased sediment load in a small stream called Oxley Branch. My poster will examine criticisms by Bryan Stevenson in his book Just Mercy. Stevenson points to problems in the U.S. Prison and Justice systems, including mass incarceration, racial bias and sentencing, unfair convictions, and why the use of the death penalty is an unjust and impractical form of punishment that should be abolished. My poster will summarize many of these problems, as well as examine supporting evidence and evaluate different proposals for criminal justice reform.

An artist is often impossible to separate from their work. Hieronymus Bosch is no exception. His unique immersion in religion, alchemy, and art influenced and are portrayed in his paintings. By looking at his painting Tondal’s Vision under the scope of both religion and psychoanalysis, it reveals new discoveries and perspectives. The theoretical framework of psychoanalysis from author, Anne D’Alleva, aids in uncovering Bosch’s obsession with religious symbolism. This suggests that he is dealing with an underlying quarrel. Strata, a multi-sensory installation by Canadian artist Shannon Collis on display at the Berman Museum of Art, immerses visitors in an environment of deep sonic resonance and dynamic moving images that travel above and through Alberta’s Boreal Forest, the Athabasca River, and Fort McMurray to underscore the scale of the Fort Hills Suncor Oil Sands and Syncrude Oil Plant, the third-largest known crude bitumen reservoir on the planet. The 1920s were a key era for women and women’s rights. It was also a key era for immigration reform and antiimmigrant sentiment. My research is asking if and how there is a correlation between these different takes on one decade. What my research has shown is that while women were fighting for equality and their right to vote, many were also fighting for traditional family values, family roles, conservatism, and nativism.
