Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky Dec 2011

Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky

Emma Barkus

The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify. This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration.

Engaging Game Design Students Using Peer Evaluation, Amber Settle, Charles Wilcox, Chad Settle Oct 2011

Engaging Game Design Students Using Peer Evaluation, Amber Settle, Charles Wilcox, Chad Settle

Amber Settle

Many information technology educators have worked in recent years to develop courses to attract students to the field. As faculty achieve success with technical courses designed to be appeal to a broad audience, it can be hard to maintain the initial excitement particularly as multiple sections of the courses are taught on a continuing basis. In this article we describe a project that added peer evaluation to an assessment in a game design course with a large non-major audience. While controversial, peer evaluation has shown some promise in motivating students to work harder and in improving certain key skills. Consistent …

Computational Thinking In A Game Design Course, Amber Settle Oct 2011

Computational Thinking In A Game Design Course, Amber Settle

Amber Settle

As a part of an NSF-funded project to enhance computational thinking in undergraduate general education courses, activities and assessments were developed for a game design course taught at DePaul University. The focus of the course is on game analysis and design, but the course textbook uses an approach that is heavily grounded in computational thinking principles. We describe the course activities and assignments and discuss an initial assessment of those materials. Our results show that there is a gap in difficulty between several of the activities and indicate that the materials developed help students to better learn the computational thinking …

Re-Evaluating Vietnam’S Nghe-Tinh Soviets (1930-1931) Using A Historical Gis: Some Preliminary Observations, David W. Del Testa Oct 2011

Re-Evaluating Vietnam’S Nghe-Tinh Soviets (1930-1931) Using A Historical Gis: Some Preliminary Observations, David W. Del Testa

Faculty Journal Articles

The Nghe-Tinh Soviets of 1930-1931, a rebellion against colonial authority in north-central and central colonial Vietnam, has received extensive analysis by a variety of commentators and scholars, both Vietnamese and not. Most scholars, Vietnam and internationally, settled on some view of immiseration combined with the presence of pro-communist organizers as the motive forces for the rebellion, but a few have favored questions of political dissatisfaction and local empowerment as underlying motivations for revolt. Until recently, examining the rebellion on a gross scale in order to test either theory has proven difficult, with a surfeit of information but no easy way …

Classic Tailoring For Women's Wear, Michelle Mccarthy May 2011

Classic Tailoring For Women's Wear, Michelle Mccarthy

Senior Honors Projects

A well-tailored jacket is considered to be a staple item in a working-woman’s wardrobe. Generally characterized as a garment with notched collar and lapels and a lining, these “tailored” garments are expected to fit appropriately and be constructed to a high level of quality. Classic tailoring, also known as bespoke tailoring in the UK, refers to the methods and techniques used to build a completely original and unique suit for your client.

For this project, each of my clients are members of my family: my younger cousin, myself, my mother, and my grandmother. Presenting four generations in my family, I …

Implementing Variations 6.0 Pilot, Uconn 2010-2011, Anna E. Kijas

UConn Library Presentations

This presentation examined implementation of Variations 6.0 (open-source system) at UConn from the perspective of a music librarian. Focus is placed on the importance of collaboration between University Library ITS and the M&DA Library, as well as the creation of a realistic workflow model, pilot timeline, and any challenges that were met along the way. Additionally, the decision behind choosing Variations 6.0 as a possible replacement for the current digital audio reserve system (at UConn) is discussed and the implications associated with providing streaming access to albums rather than single-tracks. This presentation was presented at the Northeast Regional Computing Program …

Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton Apr 2011

Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

I share perspectives on selected everyday issues that have a multicultural import. Some of the poems presented are from The Road To Kenema And Other Poems (2003). I contend that there is a connection between poetry and diversity, and that teachers could use poetry to introduce difficult topics, and develop critical thinking with their students in all disciplines.

Digging For Treasure: Zarzuelas And Other Gems In The Historical Sound Recordings Collectionat Yale University, Diane Napert

Diane Napert

The Historical Sound Recordings Collection at Yale has several very rare early recordings of zarzuelas.  These are hard to find, even in Europe, so cataloging them allowed them to be "discovered" and enjoyed again.
