Toward A Model Of Theatrical Curation, Lisa Scott-Murphy

Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004

Our two main areas of investigation raise these questions: Can immersion theatre be used to expand currently available models of ‘experiential’ exhibition making in a museum context? Could such a theatrical curatorial approach be used to address contemporary debates about the relationship between the past and the present in Australian history?

Post-Franco Theatre, Sharon G. Feldman Jan 2004

Post-Franco Theatre, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

In the multiple realms and layers that comprise the contemporary Spanish theatrical landscape, “crisis” would seem to be the word that most often lingers in the air, as though it were a common mantra, ready to roll off the tongue of so many theatre professionals with such enormous ease, and even enthusiasm, that one is prompted to wonder whether it might indeed be a miracle that the contemporary technological revolution – coupled with perpetual quandaries concerning public and private funding for the arts – had not by now brought an end to the evolution of the oldest of live arts, …

Dins La Nostra Memòria, Sharon G. Feldman Jan 2004

Dins La Nostra Memòria, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The Theatrical Concession System In Prussia, 1811-1869, William Grange Jan 2004

The Theatrical Concession System In Prussia, 1811-1869, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

In 1869, the Prussian House of Deputies passed a law that transformed theatre practice in Berlin and other Prussian cities. When the newly unified Germany came into being two years later, the 1869 law became the legal order of business for all theatres within the new Reich. That law, called the Gewerbefreiheit Gesetz (Freedom to Engage in Business Act), put an end to the way theatre had formerly been produced, dissolving the concession system that had been in operation for decades previous; it also terminated a tradition that had functioned for centuries, both in Prussia and in nearly all other …

"Rules, Regulations, And The Reich: Comedy Under The Auspices Of The Propaganda Ministry", William Grange Prof. Dr.

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

On September 22, 1933 the National Socialist cabinet, under Chancellor Adolf Hitler, passed the Reich Cultural Chamber Law (the Reichskulturkammergesetz), giving Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels charge of an organization the new Law created, the Reich Cultural Chamber. Theatre Chamber reserved the right to license productions for any theatre performance; but like most bureaucracies, it expanded its domain of authority, increased its budgetary needs, and consolidated its power. The Reich Theater Act (Reichstheatergesetz) in 1934 sustained those efforts. On September 15, 1935 the Theatrical Trade Guild (Fachschaft Bühne) was founded in accordance with the so-called Nuremberg …

Rules, Regulations, And The Reich: Comedy Under The Auspices Of The Propaganda Ministry, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

When the National Socialist regime assumed power in Germany on January 30, 1933, it set about immediately to formulate regulations, edicts, and policies for a "renewal" of the German theatre. Adolf Hitler had an interest of long standing in the theatre, and Nazi strategies for controlling, supporting, and re-generating the theatre went into effect over a period of about eighteen months. On September 22, 1933 Hitler's cabinet passed the Reich Cultural Chamber Law (Reichskulturkammergesetz), giving Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels charge of an organization the new Law created, the Reich Cultural Chamber. The legislation stipulated seven individual chambers subsumed …

Competition And Success In Secondary School Drama Programs: A Comparative Study, Lisa Lenstra-Norman Jan 2004

Competition And Success In Secondary School Drama Programs: A Comparative Study, Lisa Lenstra-Norman

Graduate Research Papers

Among the participants in secondary school drama programs, indirect competition, with its emphasis on mastery and personal achievement, may promote the development of successful behaviors such as having the ability to perform tasks skillfully, revealing a commitment to setting and reaching high expectations, showing responsibility, possessing self-esteem and caring for others. Therefore the purpose of this study is to determine an answer to the following question: does indirect competition enhance the success of participants in a secondary school drama program? Because one of the two schools studied does not take part in large group or individual speech contests, this study …

An American Actor's Dialect, Michael J. Bruckmueller Jan 2004

An American Actor's Dialect, Michael J. Bruckmueller

Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of the past ten years, both studying and teaching Voice & Speech for the Actor, I have become frustrated with the status quo of so called 'standard speech'. The two dialects that I have studied in depth are Edith Skinner's 'American Classical Stage Standard' and Kenneth Crannell's 'Career Speech'. I have found something lacking in both the Skinner dialect and Crannell's 'Career Speech'. Yet, I believe that each has a strength from which the other could benefit. The specificity of the Skinner dialect makes 'American Classical Stage Standard' not only easy to learn but also an excellent …

Dis-Patch: Practice As. . . Practice And Research, Jonathan Mustard, Chrissie Parrott Jan 2004

Dis-Patch: Practice As. . . Practice And Research, Jonathan Mustard, Chrissie Parrott

Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004

Dis-Patch is the title of a dance work that was partly the outcome of research into ways in which movement in space might successfully correlate to the parameters of sound. The process of making the work in workshops, rehearsals and performance both altered our view of, and added to the background research. It became evident in this process that certain outcomes, whilst alien to musically conventional ears, were nevertheless valid and interesting sonic translations of the choreography. The performance demonstrated how issues within and between disciplines can be re-problematised through the creative and innovative use of technology. It is our …

Phillip Adams, Nanette Hassall Jan 2004

Phillip Adams, Nanette Hassall

Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004

This paper explores the importance of narrative in Phillip Adams’ work. Despite the fact that he is seen by the critics as a member of the ‘post moderns’ in dance in Australia there are significant ways in which we see him depart from the traditional understandings of those terms in order to develop a more idiosyncratic and personal style.

The Contributions Of Floyd Leslie Sandle To Black Educational Theatre In Louisiana, Ava Marie Brewster-Turner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Floyd Leslie Sandle appeared on the theatrical scene in 1938 on the campus of Grambling State University. From his humble beginnings in the segregated town of Magnolia, Mississippi, to Dillard University where his passion for theatre was nurtured by Dr. Sheppard Randolph Edmonds, Sandle made significant strides in the dvelopment of Black Educational Theatre in Louisiana. Through his unique approach of presenting plays to the residents of the rural community of Grambling, Louisiana, Sandle was able to establish a state certified Speech and Drama Department at Grambling State University. He trained students in educational theatre though his lectures, laboratory experiences, …

Plague, Pestilence & Pollution : Berkoff's Collision With Aeschylus And Sophocles, Michelle Aslett Jan 2004

Plague, Pestilence & Pollution : Berkoff's Collision With Aeschylus And Sophocles, Michelle Aslett

Theses : Honours

Our humanity is bound to perennial themes in drama, so when a classic play is adapted to 'suit' contemporary audiences, the revised version will often reflect the zeitgeist of the times in which it was produced. The magic of retrospection then allows us to examine the social and political particulars that influence the adapted as well as the original work. Indeed, Steven Berkoff's reworkings of both Aeschylus' Agamemnon and Sophocles' Oedipus Rex reflect an unsettled and divided British context in the throes of ideological upheaval during the 1970's and early 1980's. While consistent criticism of leadership and political strife in …

"Oskar Blumenthal And The Lessing Theater In Berlin, 1888-1904", William Grange Prof. Dr. Jan 2004

"Oskar Blumenthal And The Lessing Theater In Berlin, 1888-1904", William Grange Prof. Dr.

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Oskar Blumenthal (1852-1917) was Berlin’s most feared theatre critic in the early years of the new German Reich. He had the audacity of referring to Goethe as “an egghead” who had no understanding of what made plays effective for audiences, and in other critiques he ridiculed Kleist, Hebbel, and other “important” playwrights—prompting an adversary publicly to call him a “one-man lynch mob.” In the 1880s Blumenthal himself began writing plays, and he was so successful that many self-appointed cultural guardians accused him of damaging the German theatre beyond repair. His became the most frequently performed plays on any German stage …

Il Pazzia D'Innamorati: A Commedia Dell'arte, Jennifer Hart Jan 2004

Il Pazzia D'Innamorati: A Commedia Dell'arte, Jennifer Hart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis proposal is to research, workshop, develop, script, direct and produce my own commedia dell'arte. This proposal stems from my desire to explore improvisational comedy theoretically and practically. The genre of commedia dell'arte is not only timeless, but continues to further our ability to create characters and scenario for future projects as the root of improvisation. By coupling research on commedia components (character, lazzi and scenario) with the creation of an improvisational troupe, a commedia piece will be developed, documented and performed. The first part of my thesis will consist of research on the history of improvisational comedy. The …

The Merry Wives Of Windsor: A University Actress's Approach To The Role Of Mistress Ford, Brook Akya Hanemann Jan 2004

The Merry Wives Of Windsor: A University Actress's Approach To The Role Of Mistress Ford, Brook Akya Hanemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Art is too ethereal a thing to judge by tangible measure. There is no scale to weigh a performance on, no level to gauge a character’s balance, no plumb line to measure its depth. No critic can appoint an allotment of stars to represent the worth of a production, and the audience, though a vital participant within the performance experience, cannot act as Jury and deliberate together to reach an absolute verdict of approval or disapproval. How then can an actor go about working towards giving a successful performance? The Merry Wives of Windsor was written at a time when …

The Challenge Of Playing Multiple Arthurian Characters, Cynthia Lowa Jan 2004

The Challenge Of Playing Multiple Arthurian Characters, Cynthia Lowa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the portrayal of multiple roles in a production of Camelot, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. Performance and content analysis identifies and explores the difficulties and challenges in portraying multiple roles in this production, including the understudying of the leading role of Guenevere. A detailed historical analysis provides background into origin of the Arthurian legend and an examination of its historical development. A social analysis provides information on the role of women in medieval society with a discussion of the customs and laws that applied to them. Furthermore, a structural analysis of the script examines …

Taming 10 Things I Hate About You: Shakespeare And The Teenage Film Audience, L Monique Pittman Jan 2004

Taming 10 Things I Hate About You: Shakespeare And The Teenage Film Audience, L Monique Pittman

Faculty Publications

When I first paired William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with Gil Junger’s film adaptation 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), my students’ responses to the juxtaposed works of art revealed a number of fascinating and deeply-rooted ideological conflicts. While more than willing to dissect the gender trouble readily observable in Shakespeare’s sixteenth-century play, my students resisted steadily any serious critique of the recent film version. The varied responses of my students coupled with their almost uniform approbation of the film and censure of the play prompt questions that lead the critic to speculation on the nature of …

Coal And Culture: Opera Houses In Appalachia, William Faricy Condee Jan 2004

Coal And Culture: Opera Houses In Appalachia, William Faricy Condee

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Opera houses were fixtures of Appalachian life from the end of the Civil War through the 1920s. Most towns and cities had at least one opera house during this golden age. Coal mining and railroads brought travelers, money, and change to the region. Many aspects of American life converged in the opera house.

Coal and Culture: Opera Houses in Appalachia is a critical appreciation of the opera house in the coal-mining region of Appalachia from the mid-1860s to the early 1930s. Author William Faricy Condee demonstrates that these were multipurpose facilities that were central to the life of their communities. …

From Dramaturgy To Theatre As Technology: The Case Of Corporate Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham Jan 2004

From Dramaturgy To Theatre As Technology: The Case Of Corporate Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article examines a piece of corporate theatre. Although theatre has entered organization studies through the dramatistic writing of Kenneth Burke and the dramaturgical writings of Erving Goffman, this article is concerned with an approach variously described as organizational, radical, situation or corporate theatre that treats theatre not primarily as a resource, an ontology or a metaphor but as a technology. This approach involves the deployment by an organization of dramatists, actors, directors, set designers, lighting specialists, and musicians to put on performances in front of audiences. Using frameworks derived from studies of theatre a particular piece of corporate theatre …
