The Konami Code: An Experiment In Dialect Pedagogy, Thomas Cunningham Apr 2011

The Konami Code: An Experiment In Dialect Pedagogy, Thomas Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

The Konami Code is a tool for teaching stage dialects that I have been developing for the past three years. I wanted a method that didn’t rely on students’ having a keen ear for phonetics; rather one that offered context for each dialect, and presented individual sound-changes as small parts of an easy way to digest the whole. Most importantly, I wanted a process that was portable: a set series of applications that my students could incorporate easily into their actor’s tool-kit and carry with them into the professional world. The Konami Code incorporates kinesthetic and imaginative elements into the …

Planting: One Director's Approach To Cultivating And Nurturing Within A Female Ensemble, Erin Snyder Apr 2011

Planting: One Director's Approach To Cultivating And Nurturing Within A Female Ensemble, Erin Snyder

Theses and Dissertations

A director, just like a pastry chef, must be delicate. Actors are fragile, fearful human beings. And just like a pie crust requires the perfect balance of water and flour, an actor requires a similar balance in both comfort and companionship. Eryn Snyder worked for three months to create a space where her actors could live freely in the world of the characters. With a cast of four, rehearsals were intimate, demanding, and playful. Theatre requires a director to lay down the sort of soil that encourages growth. It nurtures, it listens, it plays, and it asks questions. A director’s …

Language, Race, And Culture In Porgy And Bess, Madeline J. Baker Apr 2011

Language, Race, And Culture In Porgy And Bess, Madeline J. Baker

Honors Theses

This study considers the cultural history of the story of Porgy and Bess, from its first manifestation as the 1925 novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward, to the 1927 play adaptation, to the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. Heyward, a writer from Charleston, South Carolina, based the characters on the Gullah peoples of Charleston and attempted to represent the Gullah creole language they spoke in the dialogue of the novel. The representation of the creole language in the text of the novel, and the way the language changed …

Welcome To The Circus: Finding Ways To Artistically Express The Martial Way, Donzell Lewis Apr 2011

Welcome To The Circus: Finding Ways To Artistically Express The Martial Way, Donzell Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores various artistic and ritual practices of martial arts in relation to its presentation on stage. As a martial artist and actor I believe there are complementary practices in both crafts interdisciplinary of each other. For a martial artist, the individual’s performance and execution of martial arts techniques can be enhanced through emotional availability and characterization. For the actor, the martial arts can help condition the body physically, mentally and emotionally to create a grounded presence of connectivity to the earth. However, sometimes the martial arts are viewed as a militaristic discipline and not as artistic expression. I …

2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology

Have you ever wanted to be in Prune Flat, 1965 Sun, 2007 two places at once? For Robert Whitman such a feat is no sooner imagined than done. Take two sites (66 miles apart) and one artist directing simultaneous performances and you have Whitman on his game, expanding the possibilities of artists’ theater. In a co-performance with the Dia Art Foundation at Beacon, NY, Passport illustrates the “opening ourselves to the world in which we live” scripture handed down by the artists and engineers of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). How To Blow Up A Wal-Mart Without Getting Caught And Without Blowing It Up: An Exploration Of Social Protest, Change, And Crime On Stage A, Mike Duffy '11

Honor Scholar Theses

The idea for this play was first hatched in June of 2010. It was summer in Greencastle and with no cable TV and no air-conditioning my roommate and I found the time for many heated, interesting discussions. My roommate was a particularly enterprising individual; his goal was to start a business on the town square, open a convenience store that would tap into Greencastle’s largest market: the DePauw students. Greencastle is a veritable ghost town in the summer. The discussions with my roommate often centered on the topic of this abandonment Greencastle undergoes every May of every year, and the …

Choreographic Design And Process Of Dance, Kathleen Higgins Apr 2011

Choreographic Design And Process Of Dance, Kathleen Higgins

Undergraduate Research Conference

When I began the choreographic process, I was inspired by all of the emotions one might feel at a dance audition. However, with much though and manipulation of my original movement, I realized that the body image a dancer has of herself, and the body image for which she is continuously striving, was the underlying message that I wanted my choreography to communicate.
