“Why Wouldn’T I Use It?”: Purdue Pharmaceutical’S Push Of Pills, Gillian Fletcher Mar 2020

“Why Wouldn’T I Use It?”: Purdue Pharmaceutical’S Push Of Pills, Gillian Fletcher

English Student Scholarship

Throughout the early 1940’s to mid 1960’s, the popular habit of smoking cigarettes was not only condoned, but advertised by doctors and lawmakers. With the support of medical professionals and non-restrictive advertisement laws, the widespread use of this deadly product exploded. The ‘Big Tobacco’ industry and the federal government made enormous amounts in profit and tax revenue. Numerous similarities can be found between the advertising of cigarettes and the prescription opioid, OxyContin. ‘Big Tobacco’ and the producer of OxyContin, Purdue Pharma (Hoffman and Williams Walsh), employed incredibly similar tactics to encourage the public to use their lethal products. By controlling …

Rockin' The Church: Vernacular Catholic Musical Practices, Kinga Povedak Mar 2020

Rockin' The Church: Vernacular Catholic Musical Practices, Kinga Povedak

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article focuses on the unique dimensions of lived or vernacular Catholicism through the analysis of contemporary congregational music in Hungary. Looking at the musical lives of Hungarian Roman Catholics from the late 1960s to contemporary times can provide us with new understandings of the theological contents and aesthetics, as well as the vernacular religiosity of the community. Christian popular music appeared behind the Iron Curtain relatively early, in 1967 when the first “beat mass” was created and introduced at Budapest. The early Christian popular music sounded astonishingly similar to the songs of the American Folk Mass Movement of the …

The Indigenous Communal Sense In Enrique Dussel's Concept Of People, Erick Javier Padilla Mar 2020

The Indigenous Communal Sense In Enrique Dussel's Concept Of People, Erick Javier Padilla

LSU Master's Theses

In Twenty Theses on Politics, Argentine-Mexican philosopher Enrique Dussel compares the concept of people with two Indigenous terms: The Aztec altepetl and the Mayan Amaq’. Both concepts mean ‘community’ or ‘people,’ and ‘us/we.’ However, beyond his reference to Carlos Lenkersdorf’s book Filosofar en clave tojolabal (Philosophizing in Tojolabal Code), Dussel delves not further into these Indigenous words and their implications to understand what he means by people. Focusing on the work of Carlos Lenkersdorf (2005), Gladys Tzul Tzul (2018), Alejandra Aquino Moreschi (2013), Raúl Madrid (2014) and Josef Estermann (2006), I shall examine how the political proceeding …

La Princesse Adrosis Fille De L'Empereur Hadrien: Sainte Et Martyre, Laila Fares Mar 2020

La Princesse Adrosis Fille De L'Empereur Hadrien: Sainte Et Martyre, Laila Fares

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

The Aesthetics Of Social Situations: Encounters And Sensibilities Of The Everyday Life In Japan, Garcia Chambers Mar 2020

The Aesthetics Of Social Situations: Encounters And Sensibilities Of The Everyday Life In Japan, Garcia Chambers

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What beauty could there be in mundane, interactive encounters in and observations of the everydayness of life in Japan? The answer rightly may be none whatsoever based on the Kantian, distancing, art-centered theory and practice of aesthetics. Refreshingly, however, contemporary social and aesthetic philosophers would argue that the use of the word ‘beauty’ was a misguided choice, as it repeats the common error of equating the aesthetic with the beautiful or pleasing. A more appropriate word, honoring the original sense perception meaning of aesthetics, would be ‘sensibility.’ True to this original meaning of aesthetics, this paper presents and analyzes two …

Aesthetic Disappointmnet, Russell L. Quacchia Mar 2020

Aesthetic Disappointmnet, Russell L. Quacchia

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

A survey of the literature in philosophical aesthetics reveals no extended studies on aesthetic disappointment. If anything, the topic has no more than a tacit or implicit presence to that of aesthetic satisfaction. Yet we do suffer aesthetic dissatisfactions in the form of disappointment. In this essay I attempt to initiate a discussion of the question, why and under what conditions are we aesthetically disappointed? I identify some of the main ingredients of aesthetic disappointment by examining commonly relevant emotions, the expectation basis of aesthetic appreciation, and the role of adaptive preference formation in the cultivation of personal taste as …

Peculiar Attunements: How Affect Theory Turned Musical [Table Of Contents], Roger Mathew Grant Mar 2020

Peculiar Attunements: How Affect Theory Turned Musical [Table Of Contents], Roger Mathew Grant

Philosophy & Theory

Peculiar Attunements places the recent turn to affect into conversation with a parallel movement that took place in European music theory of the eighteenth century. During that time the affects—or the passions, as they were also called—formed a vital component of a mimetic model of the arts. Eighteenth-century critics held that artworks imitated or copied the natural world in order to produce copies of the affects in their beholders. But music caused a problem for these thinkers, since it wasn’t apparent that musical tones could imitate anything with any dependability (except, perhaps, for the rare thunderclap or birdcall). Struggling to …

Visions Instantanées De L’Anthropocène : La Photographie Contemporaine À L’Épreuve De L’Environnement, Alexandre Melay Mar 2020

Visions Instantanées De L’Anthropocène : La Photographie Contemporaine À L’Épreuve De L’Environnement, Alexandre Melay

The Goose

Three Perspectives On Happiness, From Ancient To Modern: Aristotle, Adam Smith, And Martin E.P. Seligman, Patrick D. Wong Mar 2020

Three Perspectives On Happiness, From Ancient To Modern: Aristotle, Adam Smith, And Martin E.P. Seligman, Patrick D. Wong

Ph.D. Dissertations (Open Access)

This dissertation employed Ernest L. Boyer's scholarship of integration by synthesizing Seligman, Aristotle, and Smith's literature to discuss what constitutes happiness, a good life, and how to apply Martin Seligman's framework to achieve these objectives. The dissertation will also discuss how happiness was defined during the Aristotle era and how happiness is measured in contemporary society and societal perspective toward individual economics and happiness. This integration is especially necessary for studying humanities, which I used to understand the past and its influence on the present. Understanding our past encourages us to appreciate the present and work with others to establish …

Translation Of: Interview With Jacques Derrida: The Western Question Of "Forgiveness" And The Intercultural Relation, Ning Zhang, Steven Burik Mar 2020

Translation Of: Interview With Jacques Derrida: The Western Question Of "Forgiveness" And The Intercultural Relation, Ning Zhang, Steven Burik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

These two interviews with Jacques Derrida were conducted by Ning Zhang in 1999 and 2000, respectively, in preparation for the publication of his book Writing and Difference in Chinese and his first academic trip to China in 2001. In the first interview, Jacques Derrida tries to clarify the ethical concerns with regard to his deconstructive analysis of Western traditions, through his critical reading of the concept of forgiveness. In this interview he gives us a clearer insight into his ideas about the problem of intercultural exchange, especially concerning questions of translation, translatability, and untranslatability, as central issues of his work. …

The automatic search was through electronic journal database references: ProQuest Research Library, EBSCOhost: Academic Search Complete, Google Scholar, Emerald Insight and Scopus, while the manual one was performed on Google search with the snowball sampling method. A total of 28 studies on costumer frustration in the form of journal articles and proceedings were included in the inclusion criteria. The results of the …

Translation Of: Place: Derrida And Nishitani, Rolf Elberfeld, Steven Burik Mar 2020

Translation Of: Place: Derrida And Nishitani, Rolf Elberfeld, Steven Burik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In his works Chora [Derrida, Jacques. 1993. Khôra. Paris: Galilée] and “Comment ne pas parler? Denegations” Derrida used the metaphor chora from Plato’s Timaeus (49a and following) to continue his struggle with the metaphysics of presence. In 1926 Nishida, the founder of the Japanese Kyōto School, used the same metaphor to create a new foundation of philosophy. Nishitani, a disciple of Nishida, developed the work of Nishida in close connection to Zen Buddhist experiences. Derrida tries to show the limits of language within the game of language, whereas Nishitani starts from an experience beyond language, but tries to make …
