The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

MICHAEL C. C. ADAMS examines anti-war literature and finds much of it glorifies the experience, despite its realism and criticism of those far from the theater of combat. Professor of History at Northern Kentucky University, Adams's book, Our Masters the Rebels: A Speculation on Union Military Failure in the East, 1861-1865, will this year be joined by The Great Adventure: Male Desire and the Coming of World War One.

Finding the 1988 presidential campaign short on substance and the electorate insufficiently familiar with the concept, ROBERT W. SELLEN explores national interest historically and suggests the …

Plotinus On Freedom, Creativity And The One, Laura Westra Apr 1990

Plotinus On Freedom, Creativity And The One, Laura Westra

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In this paper I want to show the import and the centrality of Freedom as Creativity in the philosophy of Plotinus. I will only say a little about Freedom's cardinal role and centrality in his thought, as I defend that position at length in my forthcoming book on the topic (and on Enneads 6.8). Instead, I will show the link between Freedom and Creativity in Section 1, then speak of Creativity as a human good and ideal when understood in the Plotinian sense, touching also upon the light it sheds on general problem of philosophy (Section 2); and finally, of …

Aristotle On Unity: Metaphysics Delta 6, Constantine Georgiadis Apr 1990

Aristotle On Unity: Metaphysics Delta 6, Constantine Georgiadis

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The brief passage on accidental unity (ἕv κατὰ συμβεβηκός) in Chapter 6 of Metaphysics Δ (1015b 16-34) raises a number of questions for which the text does not provide explicit answers. Aristotle does not define the nature of accidental unity, nor does he explain the status and character of the items which partake in accidental unities. One may wonder whether those items pertain to language, or to reality or whether they involve a certain relation of language to reality. Aristotle lists different examples which are purported to illustrate different kinds of accidental unity but those kinds are not described in …

Knowing God In William Blake: A Study To Find Meaning In His Work Through Plato, Swedenborg, And Mystical Tradition, David B. Gabel Apr 1990

Knowing God In William Blake: A Study To Find Meaning In His Work Through Plato, Swedenborg, And Mystical Tradition, David B. Gabel

Institute for the Humanities Theses

This project takes a look into the philosophical and theological sources found in the work of William Blake as they culminate in his epic poem Jerusalem. This study includes an examination of the philosophies of Plato and Emanuel Swedenborg, the mystical pathway, the Jewish mystical tradition known as Kabbalah, and finally an examination of the works of Blake himself. We work from a three-fold premise: 1) that mystical experience occurs, 2) that archetypes exist in the collective unconscious, and 3) that these archetypes can be known through intuition and mystical experience. The focus is on those elements which are characteristic …

Natural Law & Right Reason In The Moral Theory Of St. Thomas Aquinas, Craig Boyd Mar 1990

Natural Law & Right Reason In The Moral Theory Of St. Thomas Aquinas, Craig Boyd

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A major problem with current discussions on the moral theory of St. Thomas Aquinas is the fact that many interpreters present Thomas's thought as a natural-law morality. While natural law is an element of Thomas's moral theory, it plays a subordinate role to the virtue of prudence.

The natural law interpreters of St. Thomas's moral theory hold that (1) natural law is the dominant element, (2) natural law can be treated in isolation from Thomas's account of virtue, and (3) the principles of natural law make Thomas's moral theory abstract and deontological. These interpretations rarely consider the virtue of prudence. …

Death, And The Elemental Passion Of The Soul: An Ancient Philosophical Thesis, With Poetic Counterpoint, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1990

Death, And The Elemental Passion Of The Soul: An Ancient Philosophical Thesis, With Poetic Counterpoint, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In his famous “Letter”, Epicurus writes to his young friend Menoeceus that “Death is nothing” — either to fear or to hope for.1 This counsel further suggests that death is not something one can claim as his/her own, and that even its contemplation brings “a craving for immortality”, and so, loosens the fragile hold we have on the life of the soul.

Feminist Literary Criticism And The Author, Cheryl Walker Jan 1990

Feminist Literary Criticism And The Author, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

In the course of this essay I wish to reopen the (never fully closed) question of whether it is advisable to speak of the author, or of what Foucault calls "the author function," when querying a text, and I wish to reopen it precisely at the site where feminist criticism and post-structuralism are presently engaged in dialogue. Here in particular we might expect that reasons for rejecting author erasure would appear. However, theoretically informed feminist critics have recently found themselves tempted to agree with Barthes, Foucault, and the Edward Said of Beginnings that the authorial presence is best set aside …
