The Last World Emperor And The Angelic Pope: Eschatological Figures As Representative Of The Medieval Struggle Of “Sacerdotium" And “Imperium”, Christopher Joseph Beiting
Masters Theses
In adopting the Christian faith, medieval people also obtained a tradition within Christianity, that of esehatology. Because of this tradition, there was a receptiveness among some for prophetic visions of the future, visions of widely varied nature. Two very popular themes running through this visionary tradition involved two eschatological figures, the Last World Emperor and the Angelic Pope, whose advent would right all wrongs and transform medieval society. This thesis will examine elements of medieval political theory as they developed out of contemporary events. It will also trace the growth and development of the figures of the Last World Emperor …
A Comparative Analysis Of Indiana Legislator And Lobbyist Concepts Of Persuasion Strategies, Rebecca A. Carrier
A Comparative Analysis Of Indiana Legislator And Lobbyist Concepts Of Persuasion Strategies, Rebecca A. Carrier
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study uses Q-methodology to describe lobbyists' and legislators' perceptions of persuasion strategies used in lobbying. Twenty lobbyists and legislators in the Indiana General Assembly participated in the study by sorting statements about lobbying strategies under three conditions of instruction. Lobbyists were asked to sort statements according to what they use to pass legislation, block legislation, and to describe their ideal strategies. Legislators were asked to sort statements according to which statements they encounter most when lobbyists were attempting to pass legislation, block legislation, and which strategies legislators would have lobbyists use ideally. The study found one factor accounted for …
Robert Grosseteste's De Ubero Arbitrio, Andrew L. Pearson
Robert Grosseteste's De Ubero Arbitrio, Andrew L. Pearson
Masters Theses
De Libero Arbitrio of Robert Grosseteste (ca. 1170-1253) represents his primary exploration of that aspect of man's relationship to nature, to other human beings, and to God, known as free choice. This thesis explores the relationship of his treatise De Libero Arbitrio to his treatises De Veritate, De Veritate Propositionis, and De Scientia Dei. It also offers an outline and summary of De Libero Arbitrio and presents an English translation of Ludwig Baur's edition of the first recension of this treatise with updated notes.
John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield
John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield
Dissertations and Theses
John Rawls' A Theory of Justice stands as the single most important work in the Anglo-American liberal tradition after World War II. In A Theory of Justice, Rawls revives the social contract doctrine in order to determine principles of justice that would be chosen by persons who are free and equal moral individuals. Since Rawls believes that no single conception of the good can establish justice in a pluralistic society, he posits a set of principles of right which are prior to any particular good. Thus his theory, which he calls "justice as fairness," is deontological. Since its publication …

YOSHINOBU HAKUTANI reveals the similarities and differences between Zen Buddhism and American Transcendentalism, particularly in the writings of Emerson and Whitman, a view which illuminates much in their philosophy and also helps us understand where the two American authors diverged. Professor of English at Kent State University, Hakutani has published books on Theodore Japanese fiction, Thedore Dreiser, Richard Wright, Yone Noguchi, and many articles on similar topics.
Moby-Dick, though securely rooted in its own time, prefigures twentieth-century totalitarianism’s epitome, Nazi Germany, in the opinion of CHRISTOPHER S. DURER. Professor of English at the University of …

Philosophy Faculty Research
Quite mundane pursuits as well as lofty attempts to achieve the extraordinary turn us against each other in tragic, insidious ways. These pursuits give rise to an "invisible hand" that, far from guiding people toward, steers them instead toward confrontation and aggression. People end up literally making war in order to secure a good life. My aim here is to lay bare mechanisms by which our undertakings make aggressors of us. I begin with an analysis of competition, aggression, and related phenomena.
