The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

Offering a stimulating and much-needed comment on the current fashions in literary criticism, ROBERT GRUDIN also provides an alternative which, he urges, puts the text and the author in context, and literary theorists in their proper place vis-à-vis the work under scrutiny. Grudin is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Oregon.

PAUL J. SCHUMACHER explores Franz Kafka's discourse on transcendence in his unfinished novel, The Castle, and traces his meaning to Kierkegaard's investigation of the same topic. Associate Professor of English at Ball State University, Schumacher has recently completed a book-length manuscript on "Existentialism …

Creativity Its Phenomenology In Man And Nature, Margaret L. Mccoy Jul 1991

Creativity Its Phenomenology In Man And Nature, Margaret L. Mccoy

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The phenomenal world comes into being. The act is an autonomous process weaving the abstract world and the concrete world into one reality. We name this process "Creativity." A journey into mind and matter, into the inner subjective realm and the outer objective realm, is required to observe Creativity's grand performance. Western thought may be revolutionized in finding that in exploring Creativity man is exploring himself; Nature has consciousness as he does, and barriers between mind and matter are non-existent in the womb of creation. As ancient philosophies and mystical ideas of the East once proposed: the Many is One. …

In The Shadow Of Oriental Culture: A Study Of The Impact Of Confucianism On Japan's Economic Development After World War Ii, Xuedong Xu May 1991

In The Shadow Of Oriental Culture: A Study Of The Impact Of Confucianism On Japan's Economic Development After World War Ii, Xuedong Xu

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Japan's fast economic growth after World War II can be ascribed to different factors. This study seeks to determine whether the cultural factor, more specifically Confucianism in Japanese version, has constituted the dynamism behind the success stories of Japan. The study approaches the problem by examining the Confucian doctrine and original works of important Japanese philosophers concerning the Confucian ethics and values, which are recrystallized into new organizational patterns in industrial corporation. While the period after World War II is the focus of the study, the unique features of Japanese industry like "Life-time Employment" and "Groupism" are reviewed to determine …

The Birth Of Logic, John Corcoran Apr 1991

The Birth Of Logic, John Corcoran

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The last two decades have witnessed a debate concerning whether Aristotle's syllogistic is a system of deductive discourses having epistemic import exemplifying an Aristotelian theory of deductive reasoning and justifying the claim that Aristotle is the founder of logic taken as the scientific study of proof or whether, on the contrary, the syllogistic is a system of true propositions of a theory of classes justifying the claim that Aristotle is the founder of logic is taken as the scientific study of formal relations such as class inclusion. An epistemically-oriented interpretation has been contending with an ontically-oriented interpretation. This debate should …

Plato On The Souls Of Beasts, Eve Browning (Cole) Apr 1991

Plato On The Souls Of Beasts, Eve Browning (Cole)

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Although Plato's emphasis on rationality and calculative reason, along with his faith in the soul's immortality, place him well to mark a clear-cut distinction between the human and the beast, that clear distinction is somewhat difficult to locate. While there is no strong evidence that Plato was inclined to attribute human-like cognitive capabilities to animals, the absence of extended textual engagements with animal cognition make this an uncertain issue. And in the moral domain, there do seem to be texts which suggest that a kind of natural virtue may be found among animals. These appear in the Laws. and are …

Kantianism And Emile Durkheim's Ethical Theory, Maureen Lyons '91 Apr 1991

Kantianism And Emile Durkheim's Ethical Theory, Maureen Lyons '91

Honors Projects

Durkheim owes much of his ethical theory to Kant, and wishes to retain a great deal of Kantianism in the theory. However, he does so at great cost to his own theory. Instead of reconciling the competing claims of rationalism and empiricism, which is his ultimate goal in utilizing Kant, Durkheim ends up with an ethical theory which is full of contradictions and which is basically a solely empiricist account of morality. By exploring both Kant's and Durkheim's ethical theories, I will demonstrate both the problems inherent in Durkheim's attempt to reconcile rationalism and empiricism, and his failure in retaining …
