Blackmail: Dde-Type Inquiries - 1993, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

DDE-type inquiries usually emerge from a particular brand of intuitionistically-applied deontology which one might call a "theory of side-constraints". From the deontologic notion that "persons are ends, not means," philosophers of this stripe have intuited a number of constraints that should constrain moral actors regardless of the cost. The science of side-constraints is obviously inconsistent with theories such as utilitarianism and economic wealth-maximization, where assessing the costs and benefits of an action constitute the primary guide for action. By contrast side-constraint philosophers tell us that one may not kill another person even to save a large number of other persons; …

Not By Skill Alone: The Centrality Of Character To Critical Thinking, Harvey Siegel Jan 1993

Not By Skill Alone: The Centrality Of Character To Critical Thinking, Harvey Siegel

Philosophy Articles and Papers

Connie Missimer (1990) challenges what she calls the Character View, according to which critical thinking involves both skill and character, and argues for a rival conception-the Skill View-according to which critical thinking is a matter of skill alone. In this paper I criticize the Skill View and defend the Character View from Missimer's critical arguments.

A Musical Retrieve Of Heidegger, Nietzsche, And Technology: Cadence, Concinnity, And Playing Brass, Babette Babich Jan 1993

A Musical Retrieve Of Heidegger, Nietzsche, And Technology: Cadence, Concinnity, And Playing Brass, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

A discussion of Heidegger's analysis of the essence of modern technology as a version of what Heidegger names Nietzsche's highest will to power read together with Heidegger's understanding of Nietzsche's statement of the nihilism of our day. It is argued that Heidegger's philosophic questioning of technology is inevitably foreclosed by his stylized, hermetic reading of Nietzsche's expression of the will to power. Thus it is necessary to read Heidegger's critique of technology in the light of rather than against Nietzsche's critique of science and culture. This entails a reading of Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche against Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche. But …

Philosophies Of Science: Mach Duhem Bachelard, Babette Babich

Research Resources

approaches reflect the philosophical reflections on science expressed from the tradition of continental thought. In this context, the philosophical reflections on science to be found in Mach, Duhem and Bachelard may be mined for what should prove to be a productive

historical foundation between these two traditions addressed to a common focus.

Mach, Duhem and Bachelard among other thinkers have argued that science itself is more critical, indeed more inherently ‘hermeneutic’, than philosophy. But this point is problematic, and not only because of its counter-intuitive content -- whereby science ends up with the virtue of being more hermeneutic than hermeneutics …

Prescience And Providence: A Reply To My Critics, David P. Hunt Jan 1993

Prescience And Providence: A Reply To My Critics, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

I respond to the two critiques of my position on the providential usefulness of simple foreknowledge. Professor Kapitan objects that I have not directly addressed his main argument against deliberating while holding a belief about the outcome of the deliberation. Perhaps he is right; in any event, I address that argument here and find it wanting. Professor Basinger focuses his attack on my scenario for divine decision-making. I reply that he has misunderstood the role of that scenario, that his proffered counterexample fails, and that it would not refute my position even if it succeeded.

Divine Providence And Simple Foreknowledge, David P. Hunt Jan 1993

Divine Providence And Simple Foreknowledge, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

A mainstay of the traditional doctrine of divine omniscience is the assumption that foreknowledge can make an essential contribution to God's providential action in the world. The tendency in recent analyses, however, is to regard the providential use of foreknowledge as self-stultifying. I argue that this conclusion is premature: neither the "metaphysical" nor the "doxastic" objection employed by the critics is sufficient to nullify a significant providential appeal to foreknowledge. Thus there is no reason to embrace either of the "solutions" proposed by the critics: the rejection of foreknowledge, or its assimilation to middle knowledge.
