On The Trail Of A French Philosopher Of Genius, Jules Lequyer, Donald W. Viney Jan 1995

On The Trail Of A French Philosopher Of Genius, Jules Lequyer, Donald W. Viney

Faculty Submissions

This is a brief account of my travels in the summer of 1994 to Bretagne to trace the steps of the little-known French philosopher, Jules Lequyer (1814-1862). My wife and I were hosted by Dr. Paul Houillon and his family in Plouguernével. Our meetings with the mayors of Quintin (Lequyer's town of birth) and Plérin (where Lequyer is buried) were covered by two national French newspapers.

Transgression And Limits In Euripides' Alkestis, Leshu Torchin Jan 1995

Transgression And Limits In Euripides' Alkestis, Leshu Torchin

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

This paper seeks to understand Euripides' Alkestis in the terms of the transgression described by both Michel Foucault and Longinus. The first section explores transgression as a process that erases the prior limits in order to reconstruct and redefine them. During this process, limits and boundaries are stripped away. A period of horror and liminality ensues in which the meaning of boundaries comes into question. The second section examines the positionality of death as the primary limit that frames the events of the tragedy. The third Section explores the deteriorating functionality of the gender roles held by Admetus and Alkestis. …

Stop Making Me Laugh, Can't You See I'M Dying Here?, Pam Parrish Jan 1995

Stop Making Me Laugh, Can't You See I'M Dying Here?, Pam Parrish

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

The Phaedo comprises one speech. This speech is delivered in the form of a war; a war that wonders about and is fought over the existence of the soul after the death of the body. Does the soul here perish, or is it truly immortal? The life or death of the soul becomes in this sense the prize of the war-the underlying cause, the quest for knowledge of the Truth. Thus, the side that presents the prevailing theory of the soul receives, not only the honor of possessing the answer to this long and much-sought after question, but also the …

"Pleasing Passages": Style In The Old English Pastoral Care, Ray Moye Jan 1995

"Pleasing Passages": Style In The Old English Pastoral Care, Ray Moye

Quidditas

The Old English Pastoral Care, a translation of Gregory the Great's Liber Regula Pastoralis which King Alfred completed sometime in the first few years of the 890s, was the first in a series of translations of Latin Christian works in English that would serve as the foundation of Alfred's program of cultural and educational reform aimed at restoring England's preeminence as a leading Christian intellectual center. This reputation that the land had enjoyed during the glory days of Bede and Alcuin had been lost as a consequence of continual Viking invasions in the eighth and ninth centuries, with the …

Ethics And The Seven Liberal Arts: Another Look At The Liberal Arts Curriculum Of The Twelfth And Thirteenth Centuries, Willard W. Dickerson Iii Jan 1995

Ethics And The Seven Liberal Arts: Another Look At The Liberal Arts Curriculum Of The Twelfth And Thirteenth Centuries, Willard W. Dickerson Iii

Quidditas

Most modern discussions of the liberal arts curriculum of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries focus their attention rather narrowly on the seven arts subsumed under the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy). This is not without some cause. After all, Thierry of Chartres, in the prologue to his Heptaatheucon, remarked:

For since these are the two principal tools of the philosopher, understanding (intellectus) and the expression (interpretatio) thereof—the quadrivium gives light to understanding and the trivium furnishes the elegant, rational, decorous expression thereof—it is evident that the heptatheucon [i.e., …

Leonardo's Virtuvian Man: A Renaissance Microcosm, Charles Carman Jan 1995

Leonardo's Virtuvian Man: A Renaissance Microcosm, Charles Carman

Quidditas

Human nature is that nature which...elevated above all the works of God...enfolds intellectual and sensible nature...so that the ancients were right in calling it a microcosm, or a small world. Hence, human nature is that nature which, if it were elevated unto a union with Maximality, would be the fullness of all the perfections of each and every thing.

The Moral Reasoning Of Males And Females In Response To Hypothetical Dilemmas Involving The Care Of Elderly Family Members, Denise Litterer Jan 1995

The Moral Reasoning Of Males And Females In Response To Hypothetical Dilemmas Involving The Care Of Elderly Family Members, Denise Litterer

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Twenty Midwestern Caucasian college students, ten males and ten females, were tested on justice and care orientations when reasoning about hypothetical moral dilemmas involving the care of elderly family members. A slightly modified version of the dilemma developed in Stack's (1990) study was used along with a new dilemma developed by the author of this study to further clarify the coding process. Lyons' (1983) scoring method and Gilligan's (1982) guidelines were used to code subjects' responses. No sex differences in the type of moral reasoning were found. The results of this study did not support Gilligan's theory that there are …

Kant, The Duty To Promote International Peace, And Political Intervention, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 1995

Kant, The Duty To Promote International Peace, And Political Intervention, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Kant argues that it is the duty of humanity to strive for an enduring peace between the nations. For Kant, political progress within each nation is essential to realizing lasting peace, and so one would expect him to view political intervention- defined as coercive interference by one nation, or some of its citizens, with the affairs of another nation in order to bring about political improvements in that nation-as justified in some cases.! Kant, however, explicitly rejects all intervention by force, and some aspects of his work support an unqualified prohibition of political intervention. In this paper I will examine …

Computationalism And The Problem Of Other Minds, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 1995

Computationalism And The Problem Of Other Minds, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this paper I discuss Searle's claim that the computational properties of a system could never cause a system to be conscious. In the first section of the paper I argue that Searle is correct that, even if a system both behaves in a way that is characteristic of conscious agents (like ourselves) and has a computational structure similar to those agents, one cannot be certain that that system is conscious. On the other hand, I suggest that Searle's intuition that it is “empirically absurd” that such a system could be conscious is unfounded. In the second section I show …

1996 Allen D. Breck Award Winner: Narration And Quattrocento Annunciation Paintings, Joseph D. Parry

Quidditas

Quattrocento Annunciation paintings are particularly useful in offering us a better understanding of the nature of narration in Renaissance art. When we describe the narration in Renaissance art. When we describe the narrative construction of the Annunciation in the work of quattrocento painters, a Fra Angelico, a Fra FIlippo Lippi, or a Sandro Botticelli, we know, of course that the Annunciation as a narrative ultimately resides in the language of St. Luke's Gospel; though in being told and retold, it easily takes on a life of its own in oral transmissions, in paraphrasings in sermons, in elaborations in scriptural commentaries, …

The Return Of Lost Property According To Jewish & Common Law: A Comparison, Michael J. Broyde, Michael Hecht Jan 1995

The Return Of Lost Property According To Jewish & Common Law: A Comparison, Michael J. Broyde, Michael Hecht

Faculty Articles

This article compares the legal rules and jurisprudence of the American common law and Jewish law in the area of finding and returning lost or abandoned property, illustrating the interplay between the purely legal and ethical components of the respective legal systems. Surprisingly enough, the differences between the two systems are not usually significant; they follow the same basic legal principles, and typically lead to the same results. There are, however, two major exceptions: Jewish law imposes a duty to rescue the lost property of one's neighbor, while the common law does not require that one initiate the process by …

A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell Jan 1995

A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell

Dissertations and Theses

This study considers an expanded meaning of "uncertainty" as it affects decision-makers. The definition adopted is based on a decision-maker who is uncertain, i.e. aware of the insufficiency of her knowledge for the purpose of rationally determining which option to choose. A taxonomy of uncertainties is developed from this definition. The first stage is a Generalized Decision Model, which expands on a standard decision model often assumed in technical works by allowing uncertainty over components of the model that are assumed to be perfectly known in the standard model. These additional potential "subjects" of uncertainty include the feasibility of options, …

Standing Up To Mr. O. (1998) By Claudia Mills, Gareth B. Matthews Jan 1995

Standing Up To Mr. O. (1998) By Claudia Mills, Gareth B. Matthews

Middle Grades Books

Fifth-grade Maggie's refusal to dissect a worm in science class is the first step on a philosophically-complicated path of moral awakening that will lead to conflict with her family, her friends, and her school. Claudia Mills’ middle-grades novel Standing Up to Mr. O. is an ideal text to introduce a discussion of moral issues concerning the treatment of animals. Almost all the points one would want to include in such a discussion are raised here, and they appear in a way that makes them immediately accessible both to teenagers and to their parents and teachers.

[Introduction To] Earthwards: Robert Smithson And Art After Babel, Gary Shapiro Jan 1995

[Introduction To] Earthwards: Robert Smithson And Art After Babel, Gary Shapiro

Bookshelf

The death of Robert Smithson in 1973 robbed postwar American art of an unusually creative practitioner and thinker. Smithson's pioneering earthworks of the 1960s and 1970s anticipated contemporary concerns with environmentalism and the site-specific character of artistic production. His interrogation of authorship, the linear historiography of high modernism, and the limitations of the museum prefigures key themes in postmodern criticism while underscoring the uniqueness of Smithson's own work as an artist, filmmaker, and writer.

Gary Shapiro's elegant and incisive study of Smithson's career is the first book to address the full range of the artist's dazzling virtuosity. Ranging from Smithson's …
