The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

WILLIAM V. DAVIS evokes James Wright's use of place, both geographic location and personal space, in poems set in the Ohio of his birth and early life. Author of criticism (in books such as Understanding Robert Bly, Critical Essays on Robert Bly, and Miraculous Simplicity: Essays on R. S. Thomas) and poetry (for example, One Way to Reconstruct the Scene, winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, The Dark Hours, winner of the Calliope Press Chapbook Prize, published with his full middle name, Virgil), including both criticism and poems in the Midwest Quarterly, Davis is Professor of English …

A Philosophic Inquiry Into Causation Comparing Diverse Metaphysical Systems, Jane Fisher Jun 1996

A Philosophic Inquiry Into Causation Comparing Diverse Metaphysical Systems, Jane Fisher

Masters Theses

Causation is a problem for philosophers because in explaining causation one must explain reality itself. Since the metaphysical systems of history are carefully reasoned claims concerning reality, they will be employed in this discussion of causation. We will examine the foundational posits of four metaphysical positions -- Buddhism, Platonism, Nominalism, and Realism -- and review the meaning each assigns for causation. We can then observe how the meaning of causation is altered depending on the system of metaphysics that serves as its context.

Two Problems In The Philosophy Of Mind, C.J. Summers '96 May 1996

Two Problems In The Philosophy Of Mind, C.J. Summers '96

Honors Projects

The philosophy of mind has historically been concerned to a large part with two central phenomenon of human experience. The first is the intentionality of our mental states, the fact that they seem to be meaningful. The second is the fact that humans are conscious beings. Not only do we receive and process information, we seem to be aware of the experiences which constitute our input and are cognizant and in control of many of the processes which are performed upon this information. It is of obvious interest how we manage to have intentional mental states and be conscious beings. …

Characteristics Associated With Resilience In Battered Women, Mei-I Chang May 1996

Characteristics Associated With Resilience In Battered Women, Mei-I Chang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Higgins (1994) offered resilience as an alternative conceptual approach to the traditional focus on psychopathology for battered women. In this study, resilience was defined as a woman's state of psychological growth despite an abusive relationship. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between staff ratings of resilience, individual psychological resources, and situational abuse factors. A sample of 105 battered women, served by San Diego domestic violence agencies, was administered a battery of five questionnaires assessing constructive thinking, social support appraisal, optimism, psychological distress, and abuse experiences. Agency staff members recruited participants and provided clinical ratings of resilience. …

Teaching Thinking And Reasoning Skills More Effectively, Marcus R. Mumford May 1996

Teaching Thinking And Reasoning Skills More Effectively, Marcus R. Mumford

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Political pundits whine that the world would be a better place if only more people thought like them. A clever engineer once told me that the world needs (his arms come together in a weight lifting pose, hands rounded together) more circles! Me? I want a world full of wise, thinking individuals. This is a world of minds that have an "inner balance wheel"; minds that protect themselves from extremes and under-use. Rudyard Kipling set up the model of a well-trained mind, "If you can keep your head while all around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you... …

The Right To Die: A Brief Look At Physician-Assisted Suicide, Brooke Meredith Sanders Purves

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Recently, there has been some discussion in Congress about writing a Constitutional amendment declaring that every American citizen has the "right to die" if he or she so sees fit. Opponents of this amendment believe that it will be abused - that although the amendment would generally apply to terminally ill patients, depressed teenagers and the like will be able to commit suicide if they feel like it, and mothers with deformed infants may act as guardians and exercise the right for their children, with no protection from the state. Their concern is certainly warranted. It is not the goal …

Ecological Thought, Now And Then., Jared Glenn Parkinson May 1996

Ecological Thought, Now And Then., Jared Glenn Parkinson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In recent years a movement has surfaced which has greatly influenced many different aspects of society. This movement, referred to as the environmental movement, is supported by the central idea that humans are internally related to the environment and that humans have the ability to impair natural systems from being able to maintain themselves and evolve. Some activists in this movement believe that the earth is a living organism and that all objects have intrinsic worth. Environmentalists generally accept a more ecocentric view of the wilderness. This environmental movement is referred to by many different names including the ecological, green, …

Gnarled Defined, Rudy Rucker May 1996

Gnarled Defined, Rudy Rucker

SWITCH

The article is a reflection of the author’s conception of the term ‘gnarly’, extending the term’s meaning from its origins in California surfer slang. 'Gnarly' is often used in a colloquial context, however, the author believes that the term is able to be used in an academic field as it pertains to outcomes and results of equations. Discussions towards the application of the term 'gnarly' showcase how it can be used in a scientific, mathematical, and artistic context through seemingly random patterns. In order to be gnarly, things must lie and exist between the realm of orderly and chaotic often …

Aristotle And Chrysippus On The Physiology Of Human Action, Priscilla Sakezles Apr 1996

Aristotle And Chrysippus On The Physiology Of Human Action, Priscilla Sakezles

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The early Stoics do not seem to have physiological theories about the workings of the human body. This is not surprising in light of Chrysippus' admission, reported by Galen, of his ignorance of anatomy. Yet a physiological theory explaining the mechanics of how the body moves in response to the soul's desires can be reconstructed from a handful of neglected fragments. Interestingly, the revealed theory is nearly identical to Aristotle's explanation in On the Motion of Animals of "how the soul moves the body in voluntary motion" (700bl0 and 703b3). In this paper I reconstruct the Stoic theory, and argue …
