Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway Jan 1997

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway

Quidditas

Although Renaissance philosophers and theologians like Marsilio Ficino strove mightily to show Plato and Plotinus compatible with Saint Paul, writers of popular prose and poetry suffered no such qualms. While it appears curious and often shocking to modern readers to find reference to the apostles and Apollo in successive paragraphs, many Renaissance writer followed Dante's example in The Divine Comedy and saw nothing incongruous in embracing classical mythology while espousing Christian doctrine. A fascinating example of this combination of traditions is the popular French work of a female author of the early Renaissance—Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent …

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler Jan 1997

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler

Quidditas

When the Chorus in Henry V instructs the audience about what to expect in Act III, it reiterates the point made earlier in the play that the spectator must take an active role in helping the players achieve their goal of presenting an effective drama: "eche out our performance with your mind" (line 35), says the Chorus. This would seem to be a commonplace of theater theory, but unfortunately, recent attempt by some teachers to incorporate televisual performance activities into the Shakespeare classroom have all too often neglected the intellectual participation of students with "performance texts," that is, with printed …

1997 Allen D. Breck Award Winner: A Woman's Life As Ancillary Text: The Printed Texts Of The Biography Of Elizabeth Tanfield Caary, Jesse G. Swan

Quidditas

As the first woman to write and publish an original play in English, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Viscountess Falkland, has become the subject of increased attention and appreciation over the last few decades. Since a major reason for studying Cary has been the feminist motivation to document women's contributions to the English language and its literature and culture, biographically informed criticism has naturally drawn much attention. With Cary, biographically informed criticism has been fostered by the existence of the Life of Cary, a biography written within a couple of decades of her death primarily by one of her four conventual daughters, …

Contract, Trust, And Resistance In The `Second Treatise', Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

If there is a single problem that has dominated political thought for the past four hundred years, it is the tension within the body politic between the will of the collective, as it is expressed by those vested with authority and power, and the will of the individual. Among political theorists who have examined this problem, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke viewed this potentially ruinous tension in radically different ways. In his Leviathan, Hobbes presents the problem of how we are to conduct ourselves as a society, an apparent dilemma whose horns are anarchy and servile absolutism. Either we …

Elie Wiesel: Moral Action In An Immoral World, Christopher R. Johnson Jan 1997

Elie Wiesel: Moral Action In An Immoral World, Christopher R. Johnson

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The essay, "Elie Wiesel: Moral Action in an Immoral World," is an investigation into the three ways Elie Wiesel's characters in his novel The Town Beyond the Wall deal with their own often painful and confusing views of the absurd world about them. Because The Town Beyond the Wall is a very autobiographical work for Wiesel, the backdrop of chaos found in the novel--the concentration camps, the death of the main character's father, mother and sister, the cold indifference with which the rest of the world watched as the Jews were 'liquidated'--are found in Wiesel's world too. Reading Wiesel's works, …

Language Speaks: Heidegger's Understanding Of Language, Jason Barrett Jan 1997

Language Speaks: Heidegger's Understanding Of Language, Jason Barrett

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The central task of my thesis, entitled "Language Speaks: Heidegger on Language," is to bring to light an understanding of language found in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger (18898-1976). This understanding was rendered by a textual exegesis of three difficult texts from Heidegger's corpus: Being and Time (1929), "On the Essence of Truth" (1930), and "Hoelderlin and the Essence of Poetry" (1936). The reading of Being and Time (up to section 34) provided the grounding for the discussions on truth and language by situating Heidegger with regard to the problem of Being an language, articulating Heidegger's foundational thought, and identifying …

Dreams And Expectations: The Paris Diary Of Albert Brisbane, American Fourierist, Abigail Mellen Jan 1997

Dreams And Expectations: The Paris Diary Of Albert Brisbane, American Fourierist, Abigail Mellen

The Courier

IN 1828 Albert Brisbane (1809-1890) persuaded his wealthy father to send him to Europe in order to find out "what is the work of man on this earth? What was he put here for and what has he to do?"1 In Europe Brisbane became interested in French utopianism, especially the ideas of Claude-Henri de Rouvroy (Comte de Saint-Simon, 1760-1825) and Charles Fourier (1772-1837). Brisbane returned to the United States in 1834 and, until his death in 1890, devoted his wealth and energies to establishing an American Fourierist movement.

Capacities, Universality And Singularity, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 1997

Capacities, Universality And Singularity, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this paper I criticize Cartwright's analysis of capacities and offer an alternative analysis. I argue that Cartwright's attempt to connect capacities to her condition CC fails because individuals can exercise capacities only in certain contexts. My own analysis emphasizes three features of capacities: 1) Capacities belong to individuals; 2) Capacities are typically not metaphysically fundamental properties of individuals, but can be explained by referring to structural properties of individuals; and 3) Laws are best understood as ascriptions of capacities.

Hegel, Reason, And Idealism, Philip J. Kain Jan 1997

Hegel, Reason, And Idealism, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

In this article I want to focus on the central role that scientific reason plays, for Hegel, in leading us toward idealism, yet its complete failure to adequately establish idealism, and, oddly enough, the way in which this failure turns into a most interesting success by anchoring idealism and thus preserving us from solipsism. To bring all of this into relief, I must attend to Hegel’s differences with Kant.
