Rationalism In Normative Budget Theory, Dan Williams
Rationalism In Normative Budget Theory, Dan Williams
Publications and Research
This paper concerns epistemological rationalism and the norms used by governments to instruct their officers to perform their duties. The particular duty I discuss here is preparation of and action on the budget. In this paper I use "rationalism" as the opposite of "empiricism." This rationalism does not refer to "'economic rationality," it refers to the method of attaining knowledge associated with introspection, logic, and a priori knowledge. It is opposed to the method of attaining knowledge associated with observation, experiment, and evidence. By "norms, “normative," and other related terms, I mean action guiding language. Four senses of normative are …

Pragmatism, Internalism, And The Authority Of Claims, Dan D. Crawford
Pragmatism, Internalism, And The Authority Of Claims, Dan D. Crawford
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
This paper develops and defends an internalist account of having authority for one’s claim. It begins with Robert Brandom’s pragmatist account of thinking which locates the root notion of reasoning in a primitive language game of asking for and giving reasons. The idea is that the authority of a claim can be spelled out pragmatically in terms of the social practice of undertaking commitments and attributing entitlements. It is argued that this account fails to acknowledge the role of the subject’s grasp of the higher-order concept of the evidence on which I base my claim.
Supererogation And Overdetermination In Kant's Ethics: Analysis And Interpretation At Their Best In Baron, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
Supererogation And Overdetermination In Kant's Ethics: Analysis And Interpretation At Their Best In Baron, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Marcia Baron's book tackles two very difficult issues, both centered on criticisms of the Kantian conception of duty. The solutions to her chosen questions lie rather deeply hidden, and the procedures by which Baron digs deep to find solutions are exemplary in their presentation of careful interpretation of texts by Kant, of writers on Kant, and of conceptual analysis and criticism. This book is not like a commentary, which would consider a broader range of questions and issues; it is rather a narrower, closer analysis of a few more specific issues. These few narrow issues have broad ramifications for our …
Reconstructing The Unity Of Mathematics Circa 1900, David J. Stump
Reconstructing The Unity Of Mathematics Circa 1900, David J. Stump
Philosophy
Standard histories of mathematics and of analytic philosophy contend that work on the foundations of mathematics was motivated by a crisis such as the discovery of paradoxes in set theory or the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries. Recent scholarship, however, casts doubt on the standard histories, opening the way for consideration of an alternative motive for the study of the foundations of mathematics -- unification. Work on foundations has shown that diverse mathematical practices could be integrated into a single framework of axiomatic systems and that much of mathematics could be expressed in a single language. The new framework was the …

Dorothy L. Sayers And The Passionate Intellect, Roger Phillips
Dorothy L. Sayers And The Passionate Intellect, Roger Phillips
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Dorothy L. Sayers wrote, “[W]here the intellect is dominant it becomes the channel of all other feelings. The ‘passionate intellect’ is really passionate. It is the only point at which ecstasy can enter.” While a phrase that is often used by biographers, the actual meaning of ‘passionate intellect’ is up for discussion. In exploring the life of Sayers one can see how she came to use this term and its meaning in the context of her life.

Myth Made Truth: Origins Of The Chronicles Of Narnia, Mark Bane
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
The Chronicles of Narnia are some of C.S. Lewis’s most beloved books, but how did they come about and what was their purpose? By tracing his life, interests, and faith one can see how these elements shaped Lewis’s narrative of Narnia.

C.S. Lewis: Past Watchful Dragons, Stephanie Jones
C.S. Lewis: Past Watchful Dragons, Stephanie Jones
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Through his many stories C.S. Lewis has a unique way in which he engages the reader, first catching them with an idea, then slipping past the “watchful dragons” of our intellect to speak to our deepest parts. These stories are often discussed intellectually, but it is also important to know how these stories impact readers on a personal level.

The writings of G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis are rich with creativity and intellect, and maintain a strong defense for Christianity. They are models for the Christian apologist through their direct engagement with the world while loving it as Christ did.

Why Did Plato Write Socratic Dialogues?, William J. Prior
Why Did Plato Write Socratic Dialogues?, William J. Prior
Philosophy
The reader will discern in the title of this paper a reference to a classic article by Charles Kahn.1 In this article and in a number that have followed,2 Kahn has criticized the dominant contemporary interpretation of Plato's early dialogues and suggested an alternative of his own. I do not think Kahn's positive views are correct;3 however, I think he succeeds completely in showing what is wrong with the standard interpretation of the early dialogues. He does not show, in other words, what Plato's motives were for writing his early dialogues; but he certainly shows what were …

A Review Of Phil Washburn, "Philosophical Dilemmas: Building A Worldview", Mike W. Martin
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Lucidly written, this extensive and very original introduction to philosophy features over fifty brief, jargon-free essays arranged in pairs. Each pair answers one of the principal philosophical questions, such as "Does God exist?" or "Are we free?", with two opposing points of view. On the topic of relativism, for example, one essay argues that morality is created by society and relative to it, while the other claims that moral standards are absolute and universal. Each essay takes a definite stand and promotes it vigorously, creating a sharp contrast between the two positions. While the essays often employ standard arguments of …

The Abolition Of Man: First Principles And Pre-Evangelism (Or "What C.S. Lewis Taught My Brother"), Ted Dorman
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
In his work, The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis expresses a powerful analysis of the modern philosophies of the day. By defending what was deemed subjective and revealing the end point of modern thought, he communicates the Gospel in a way that resonates with unbelievers.

Till We Have Faces: A Restoration Of Perspective On The Condition Of Man, Joan Alexander
Till We Have Faces: A Restoration Of Perspective On The Condition Of Man, Joan Alexander
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Man’s relationship to a Divine Being is one of the persisting concerns of literature, with modern leanings contending that God does not exist or does not involve himself with man. C.S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces concerns itself with this approach to God, proposing that it might not be God who is the problem but man’s perception of him.
