Do Zeno's Arguments Challenge Aristotle's Account Of Motion?, Rose Cherubin
Do Zeno's Arguments Challenge Aristotle's Account Of Motion?, Rose Cherubin
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
What is the relationship between the arguments that Aristotle and Simplicius attribute to Zeno of Elea, and the account of motion that Aristotle presents in the Physics? Do the considerations that Aristotle raises in Physics Z.9 overcome the arguments about motion that he attributes to Zeno? Do they show the Zenonian arguments to be inapplicable or ill formed? Or do considerations that Zeno raises in the discussions attributed to him instead undermine Aristotle's account of motion? Do they undermine the possibility of physics as epistëmë? And why does Aristotle not treat Zeno's arguments about magnitude and plurality in his account …
Is Pyrrhonism Psychologically Possible?, Brian Ribeiro
Is Pyrrhonism Psychologically Possible?, Brian Ribeiro
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
How could there have been a group of philosophers who said they really were skeptics? How could they have claimed to suspend judgment about all non-evident matters which were presented to them and to have gone their way adoxastös (without belief) by (as they said) “following the appearances” (PH 1.23)? That is the question I would like to answer.

Kant's Taxonomy Of The Emotions, Kelly Sorensen
Kant's Taxonomy Of The Emotions, Kelly Sorensen
Philosophy and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
If there is to be any progress in the debate about what sort of positive moral status Kant can give the emotions, we need a taxonomy of the terms Kant uses for these concepts. It used to be thought that Kant had little room for emotions in his ethics. In the past three decades, Marcia Baron, Paul Guyer, Barbara Herman, Nancy Sherman, Allen Wood and others have argued otherwise. Contrary to what a cursory reading of the Groundwork may indicate, Kant thinks the emotions play an important role in the moral life. I want to extend the work of Baron, …

Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas
Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications
The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …

Applied Ethics In Animal Research: Philosophy, Regulation, And Laboratory Applications, John P. Gluck, Tony Dipasquale, F. Barbara Orlans
Purdue University Press Books
This volume is a collection of chapters all contributed by individuals who have presented their ideas at conferences and who take moderate stands with the use of animals in research. Specifically the chapters bear of the issues of: notions of the moral standings of animals, history of the methods of argumentation, knowledge of the animal mind, nature and value of regulatory structures, how respect for animals can be converted from theory to action in the laboratory. The chapters have been tempered by open discussion with individuals with different opinions and not audiences of true believers. It is the hope of …

The Compatibility Of Divine Determinism And Human Freedom: A Modest Proposal, David P. Hunt
The Compatibility Of Divine Determinism And Human Freedom: A Modest Proposal, David P. Hunt
Philosophy
I begin by developing an argument for the conclusion that God's causally determining everything we do is compatible with human freedom. Libertarian theists (and not just libertarians) will suspect that something must be wrong with the argument. They are right, and T explain why. I then point out that certain influential arguments for the conclusion that God's foreknowing everything we do is compatible with human freedom are in the same logical boat as this fallacious argument. I look closely at tvvo of these, showing how they go astray. I conclude with some morals suggested by this cautionary tale.
A-Logic, Richard Bradshaw Angell
A-Logic, Richard Bradshaw Angell
Philosophy Faculty Research Publications
A-LOGIC is a full-length book (600+ pg). It functions as a system of logic designed to: 1) solve the standard paradoxes and major problems of standard mathematical logic; 2) minimize that logic's anomalies with respect to ordinary language, yet; 3) prove that all theorems in mathematical logic are tautologies.
It covers lst order logic the logic of the words "and", "or", "not", "all" and "some". But it also has a non truth functional "if...then" and differs in its definition of validity, its semantics and its theorems. In the book A-logic is contrasted step by step with standard mathematical logic as …
Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale
Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale
Faculty Scholarship
Regenerative medicine seeks not only to cure disease, but also to arrest the aging process itself. So far, public attention to the new health care has focused on two of its methods: embryonic stem-cell research and therapeutic cloning. Since both processes manipulate embryos, they alarm those who believe life begins at conception. Such religious objections have dominated headlines on the topic, and were central to President George W. Bush's decision to restrict stem-cell research.
Although they are now politically potent, the present religious objections to regenerative medicine will soon become irrelevant. Scientists are fast developing new ways of culturing the …
The Use Of Aesthetics In A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Michelle Lynn Loudermilk
The Use Of Aesthetics In A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Michelle Lynn Loudermilk
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study focuses on using aesthetics in the art education curriculum. It also suggests a variety of approaches through which art educators may implement aesthetics in the classroom. Discussions of aesthetics were found in writings of Plato and Aristotle and continue to this day. Philosophers have defined aesthetics as a theory of the beautiful. Educators took this idea a step further in developing curricula and methods of educating that include aesthetics. It has been said in art education literature that aesthetics gives those who practice it a more complete understanding of art. To show the extent of benefits that aesthetics …
Pkcα Translocation And Actin Remodeling In Contracting A7r5 Smooth Muscle Cells, Chenwei Li
Pkcα Translocation And Actin Remodeling In Contracting A7r5 Smooth Muscle Cells, Chenwei Li
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Recent research indicates that protein kinase C (PKC) plays an important role in smooth muscle contraction. Because PKC activation and specificity of substrate phosphorylation is believed to be associated with the relocalization of the enzyme to specific cell sites, we first investigated the subcellular translocation of PKCα in A7r5 smooth muscle cells by confocal microscopy through use of standard immunohistologic staining and PKCα - enhanced green fluorescent protein (PKCα -EGFP) fusion protein expression. PKCα was diffusely distributed throughout the cytosol in the unstimulated A7r5 cell. Upon stimulation with phorbol 12, 13 dibutyrate (PDBu), PKCα was translocated primarily to either the …

On A Theological Counterexample To The Principle Of Alternate Possibilities, David P. Hunt
On A Theological Counterexample To The Principle Of Alternate Possibilities, David P. Hunt
Philosophy
In an earlier paper in this journal I suggested that the standard argument for theological fatalism provides a counterexample to one of its own premises, the Principle of Alternate Possibilities. David Widerker has recently urged in these pages three objections to my suggestion. I here argue that only the third of these objections raises a serious difficulty for my position, though even this difficulty is far from decisive.
On The Evolution Of Depression, Mike W. Martin
On The Evolution Of Depression, Mike W. Martin
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
In "Depression as a Mind-Body Problem," Walter Glannon outlines a psychosocial-physiological explanation of depression as a psychological response to chronic stress—today, especially social stress—in which cortisol imbalances disrupt neurotransmitters. Accordingly, treatment for depression should combine psychopharmacology and psychotherapy—a valuable reminder in light of the current restrictions on funding for health care (Hobson and Leonard 2001). My comments focus, however, on Glannon's objections to evolutionary theorists who explain our capacity for depression as adaptive to the natural and social environment. His objections are implausible because he fails to distinguish depression as a mood and a disorder.
Wu Wei In Chuang Tzu As Life-Systematic, Kuang-Ming Wu
Wu Wei In Chuang Tzu As Life-Systematic, Kuang-Ming Wu
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Wu wei (non-doing) in Chuang Tzu is expressed in story-bits reflecting life-slices. They are lifesystematic,
not random, not having a system. One; Chuang Tzu is a dragonfly over the pond of
life, dotting the water of daily ongoing without dotting it. Two; the dotting is dot-sayings that
yam life's concrete bits into story-coherence. Three; Chuang Tzu dots and struts around to let
others say, and life-coherenc.e appears. FoUl'; life-coherence is a life-family of concrete bits, a
thread of many life-fibres twisted together. Five; Chu Hsi and Chuang Tzu have dot-sayings
that draw readers into making systems of their own to …
Desert And Distributive Justice In A Theory Of Justice, Jeffrey Moriarty
Desert And Distributive Justice In A Theory Of Justice, Jeffrey Moriarty
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This paper proceeds as follows. First, I present the standard interpretation of Rawls’s account of desert. I then show how this interpretation is inadequate, bringing to light certain subtleties of the account that give it entirely new meaning. Next, I examine the criticisms of Nozick and Sher and show how, due to misconceptions of Rawls’s account of desert, they fail. Finally, I offer a criticism of Rawls’s theory of justice based on the correct interpretation of his account of desert.
Dancing With The Trickster Notes For A Transpersonal Autobiography, Stanley Krippner
Dancing With The Trickster Notes For A Transpersonal Autobiography, Stanley Krippner
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This autobiographical essay focuses on "transpersonal," "anomalous," and "exceptional"
experiences, those elements often ignored when individuals write the stories of their lives.
Nevertheless, these experiences have life-transformative potentials that may be more salient
than the activities usually serving as the basis for autobiographical accounts.
