Professional Or Practitioner? What’S Missing From The Codes?, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2003

Professional Or Practitioner? What’S Missing From The Codes?, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Imagine a code of ethics that advocated shady business practices and that the organization proposing the code came under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. Imagine further, that the investigation came to trial and the stance taken by the organization was found to be illegal by the highest court of the land. Such a scenario, if true, would raise a host of questions about codes of professional ethics, not the least of which would be “What value, if any, do codes of ethics have for the teaching of ethics?”

Sadly, the above scenario is factual. However, I’m not referring …

Die Konkretion Des Ich Und Das Problem Der Ichspaltung In Husserls Phänomenologischer Reduktion, Sebastian Luft Jan 2003

Die Konkretion Des Ich Und Das Problem Der Ichspaltung In Husserls Phänomenologischer Reduktion, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The present paper deals with an important …

03. Getting Our Thoughts Together: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Elfie', Second Edition, Matthew Lipman Jan 2003

03. Getting Our Thoughts Together: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Elfie', Second Edition, Matthew Lipman

Early Elementary School Curriculum

The cognitive skills emphasized in Elfie – distinction-making and connection-making – are those on which all-subsequent reasoning rests. They are accompanied by the criteria that are appropriate to them: sameness and difference. Other operations like the making of comparisons, the discovery of uniformities, the identification of classes, the formation of concepts, and the formulation of definition, all depend upon the logical infrastructure of these two sets of skills and criteria. Elfie should therefore be seen as the base of the Philosophy for Children program.

Collingwood, History,And Evidence, Lois M. Eveleth Jan 2003

Collingwood, History,And Evidence, Lois M. Eveleth

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Working from a unique background in both archaeology and philosophy, R.G. Collingwood undertook to revise historiography by redefining the concept of evidence. Historians through the modern period, in their willingness to emulate the natural sciences, had absorbed a brand of empiricism which was not only compromising historical thinking but also frustrating the service which history, ideally, should provide for enlightening human experience. What comes of his project is a concept of evidence which may be described as a priori.

Where Is Sherlock Holmes?, Jeffrey C. Goodman Jan 2003

Where Is Sherlock Holmes?, Jeffrey C. Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

Most philosophers would say that fictional characters lack spatiotemporal location simply because such entities do not exist.  However, even prominent believers in ficta hold that they must lack location.  I here focus on the views of one such believer, Amie Thomasson, and her Artifactual Theory.  The fundamentals of her ontology seem correct, but I argue that the view implies that ficta do have location.  I provide a diagnosis of an argument Thomasson gives for the contrary, and then suggest a way for the Artifactual Theory to account for the locations of ficta.  I conclude by discussing some potential applications of …

Dread, Route And Time: An Autobiographical Walking Of Everything Else, Phil Smith Jan 2003

Dread, Route And Time: An Autobiographical Walking Of Everything Else, Phil Smith

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This response to Reconstruction's Summer 2002 edition, Volume 2, Number 3, autobiogeography: considering space and identity, particularly to the papers of Matthew Wolf-Meyer and Davin Heckman, Subhash Jaireth, Deirdre Heddon and Sally Munt, is an attempt to establish provisionally whether a discourse that sets critical theory, autobiographical practice and a poetics of space in performative motion orbiting each other can add anything to the critical discussion of autobiogeography. Part of my motivation is an antipathy toward criticism that can be applied to everything but itself. Given that hybridity will be an important part of a critical discourse about …
