Volunteerism Develops Communities, Trains Leaders, And Guards Democracy: Odessa, Texas 1896-1948, Debra Noe Gibbs Aug 2003

Volunteerism Develops Communities, Trains Leaders, And Guards Democracy: Odessa, Texas 1896-1948, Debra Noe Gibbs

Graduate Theses

Volunteers were an essential tool used to build our nation and communities. The creation and maintenance of communities across the United States relied heavily on the activities of volunteers and their organizations in order to meet the endless needs of both the citizens and the infrastructure. Furthermore, volunteer organizations provided an increase and stability in democracy and in building communities in a variety of ways. First, volunteer organizations filled needs that the government was not able to meet. Second, they were training grounds for developing the skills needed to manage communities. Volunteer associations, by providing avenues and developing skills, helped …

Pluhar's Perfectionism: A Critique Of Her (Un)Egalitarian Ethic, Chris Crittenden

Between the Species

I intend to criticize Evelyn Pluhar’s allegedly egalitarian ethic, presented in her recent work Beyond Prejudice, partly by way of contrasting it with what she calls “perfectionism” and partly by demonstrating that, in fact, her ethic schizophrenically embraces a defective form of perfectionism. My analysis suggests that knotty animal-rights dilemmas are best approached not from a stance of viewing animals and humans as morally equal but rather from a framework more flexible and adaptive to the complexity of real-life scenarios. Such adaptability in a theory need not condone cruelty, and it avoids the unintuitive and absurdly demanding features of a …

What's Wrong With Computer-Generated Images Of Perfection In Advertising?, Earl W. Spurgin Jul 2003

What's Wrong With Computer-Generated Images Of Perfection In Advertising?, Earl W. Spurgin

Philosophy

ABSTRACT. Advertisers often use computers to create fantastic images. Generally, these are perfectly harmless images that are used for comic or dramatic effect. Sometimes, however, they are problematic human images that I call computer-generated images of perfection. Advertisers create these images by using computer technology to remove unwanted traits from models or to generate entire human bodies. They are images that portray ideal human beauty, bodies, or looks. In this paper, I argue that the use of such images is unethical. I begin by explaining the common objections against advertising and by demonstrating how critics might argue that those objections …

Scientific Methodologies In Medieval Islam, Jon Mcginnis Jul 2003

Scientific Methodologies In Medieval Islam, Jon Mcginnis

Philosophy Faculty Works

The present study considers Ibn Sînâ's (Lat. Avicenna) account of induction (istiqra') and experimentation (tajriba). For Ibn Sînâ induction purportedly provided the absolute, necessary and certain first principles of a science. Ibn Sînâ criticized induction, arguing that it can neither guarantee the necessity nor provide the primitiveness required of first principles. In it place, Ibn Sînâ developed a theory of experimentation, which avoids the pitfalls of induction by not providing absolute, but conditional, necessary and certain first principles. The theory of experimentation that emerges though not modern, does have elements that are similar to a modern conception of scientific method.

Existe Uma Distinção Relevante Entre Valores Cognitivos E Sociais?, Hugh Lacey Jun 2003

Existe Uma Distinção Relevante Entre Valores Cognitivos E Sociais?, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

It is useful to work with a model of the practices of scientific research that proposes that there are three key moments at which choices must be made: the moments of (i) adopting a strategy (or methodological rules), (ii) accepting theories, and (iii) applying scientific knowledge. Social values may have legitimate and important roles at the first and third moments, but not the second, where only cognitive values and available empirical data have essential roles. The distinction between cognitive and social values is needed to maintain this model, and thus to sustain the view that impartial scientific knowledge can be …

A Way Of Life: Saranac Lake And The 'Fresh Air' Cure For Tuberculosis, Ellen Damsky Apr 2003

A Way Of Life: Saranac Lake And The 'Fresh Air' Cure For Tuberculosis, Ellen Damsky

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In 1884, Edward Livingston Trudeau officially opened The Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium for the treatment of tuberculosis in Saranac Lake, New York. For the next seventy years, what became known as the Trudeau Sanatorium was the model of American sanatoria, promoting fresh air, rest, and nutritious food in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The introduction and use of antibiotic drugs in the treatment of disease effectively ended the sanatorium movement as well as demarcates an important juncture in American medical and scientific history. Trudeau's treatment and the Sanatorium are interpreted as social and ideological constructs from the perspectives of verbal expression, …
