Yellow River Piano Concerto: A Synthesis Of Western And Chinese Characteristics, Jiahe Liu May 2021

Yellow River Piano Concerto: A Synthesis Of Western And Chinese Characteristics, Jiahe Liu

Dissertations

The Yellow River Piano Concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for both historical and theoretical reasons. It has been performed frequently by Chinese pianists on many important occasions, such as National Day Concerts, New Year Concerts, and Spring Festival Galas. The Concerto is not only standard repertoire on Chinese stages, but it is also performed and recorded by leading international orchestras, such as the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. One of the possible reasons that made this Concerto successful is that it combines characteristics of Chinese and Western cultures. The …

Offenbach’S Operetta As Performance Practice: A Pedagogical, Dramatic, And Stylistic Role Guide For Pâris In La Belle Hélène, Peter Lake May 2021

Offenbach’S Operetta As Performance Practice: A Pedagogical, Dramatic, And Stylistic Role Guide For Pâris In La Belle Hélène, Peter Lake

Dissertations

This dissertation originated from my personal experience in performing the role of Pâris in Offenbach’s La belle Hélène and the research I conducted in preparation for the performance. Upon examining the score, I discovered the role to contain vocal elements that seemed foreign to my expectations of operatic repertoire. After consulting as many scholarly sources as I could find on the subject, I discovered little to no sense of direction in preparing and performing this unique role or for French operetta as a genre. I decided to compile my experience and research into a usable tool for preparing a French …

"Old Wine, New Bottles:" The Impact Of Schoenberg's Verein On The Arrangement Practice Of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 (Movement I), Rebecca Nederhiser

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

The purpose of this document is to provide historical and cultural context to the chamber arrangements formed in Arnold Schoenberg’s (1874-1951) Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen (Society for Private Musical Performances) and their impact on the orchestration practice of modern-day arrangers Iain Farrington and Peter Stangel. Using Gustav Mahler’s (1860-1911) Symphony No. 4 for comparison, the researcher will evaluate a reconstructed version of the work by Society member Erwin Stein, alongside two 21st century arrangements by Iain Farrington and Peter Stangel, who took creative inspiration from the Verein. From these versions, orchestration choices by each arranger will be compared …

Shostakovich’S String Quartet No.15 In E-Flat Minor, Op.144: How An Ic1 Thread Connects The Narrative To The Music, Brian Thomas Sanders May 2021

Shostakovich’S String Quartet No.15 In E-Flat Minor, Op.144: How An Ic1 Thread Connects The Narrative To The Music, Brian Thomas Sanders

Music Theses - Archive

There has been ample increase in music-theoretical analysis in Shostakovich’s late works, yet there has been one composition that has comparatively evaded this attention. String Quartet no.15 in E-flat minor, op.144 has been approached with hermeneutics and descriptive analysis; however, music-theoretical analysis is lacking. The quartet has certain musical characteristics that have not been analyzed, which leaves the perspective of this work incomplete. An unfortunate result is that the mixture of musicological and theoretical analysis is a daunting task. According to Patrick McCreless: “any depth would lead quickly into a world of intriguing musical relationships and hermeneutic enigmas.” The aforementioned …

Effects Of Musical Content On Student Practice Judgments, Decisions, And Improvement, Molly N. Batchelor

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe and compare the differences in practice behaviors among middle school band students who are presented with etudes of varying stylistic, technical, or expressive qualities. Existing literature has covered practice methodology extensively, but this study was intended to help understand how students vary strategies when presented with different musical challenges. Participants were individually observed in a pre-test, practice period, and post-test for each of two musical examples to examine the strategies used and improvement from pre-test to post-test. Results showed that participants who varied their strategy-use in lyrical and technical etudes increased performance …

Deliberate Sequencing In The Music Classroom: A Curriculum To Guide Undergraduate Music Education Majors In Music Instruction, Allison Shew Phillips May 2021

Deliberate Sequencing In The Music Classroom: A Curriculum To Guide Undergraduate Music Education Majors In Music Instruction, Allison Shew Phillips

Masters Theses

The content and structure of courses designed to train potential teachers are critical to such individuals' success. Instructors of these courses should assess which skills are required of pre-service teacher candidates. Researchers have conducted studies over the years to decide what skills are needed for successful teaching. Learning cannot occur without an instructional sequence. Undergraduate music education majors are often not instructed on sequencing methods or have a chance to practice instructional sequencing before their student teaching placement. Research studies have shown that teachers who sequence their instructional delivery and following the complete teaching cycle are considered more effective in …

Hello, Neighbor! A Curriculum For The Instruction Of Social And Emotional Learning In The Early Childhood Music Classroom Using The Pedagogical Strategies Of Fred Rogers, Julia Conceison

Masters Theses

Modern music educators are faced with many unique challenges while teaching in the early childhood and elementary classroom. With these challenges come the added stressors of students’ individual and collective experiences as they learn to process and regulate their behaviors and emotions through a variety of often unfamiliar social, political, and familial challenges. Currently, while many university teacher preparation programs focus on teaching content differentiation, curriculum creation, and content knowledge, they do not often focus on cultural relevance and responsiveness. One champion of cultural relevance and responsiveness in music education is composer, educator, minister, and children’s television host, Fred Rogers, …

An Analysis Of The Suzuki Method As It Pertains To The Importance Of Teaching Music Using The Native Language Approach; The Comparison Of The Suzuki Method To Traditional Methods; And How The Native Language Approach Aids In Teaching Music To Students With Dyslexia, Christine Nicole Collins-Davis

Music Theses - Archive

The Suzuki Method, also known as the Mother Tongue Method or Talent Education, is a method of teaching music to children using a similar process to that of native language acquisition. The method uses musical immersion, heavy parental involvement, learning by ear, and abundant repetition of repertoire to learn the language of music. The purpose of this manuscript is to show the benefits of the Suzuki Method from a historical, developmental, pedagogical perspective as well as how the method can benefit students with disabilities. This thesis organizes the exploration of the Suzuki Method into five chapters. The first chapter discusses …

“Style Within Style”: Chopin’S Use Of Smaller-Form Styles Used In His Sonata-Form Works, Isis Victoria Cabrera May 2021

“Style Within Style”: Chopin’S Use Of Smaller-Form Styles Used In His Sonata-Form Works, Isis Victoria Cabrera

Music Theses - Archive

Frédéric Chopin is widely renowned for his standalone piano works, namely his nocturnes, mazurkas, and polonaises. Many contend Chopin was better suited for salon music and should not have attempted sonata-form pieces for piano or larger ensembles. For example, in a review of Chopin’s Piano Sonata in B-flat minor, opus 35, Schumann stated: “that [Chopin] should have called it a ‘sonata’ [is to] suggest a joke, if not sheer bravado.” Along with this, David Wright states that: “Chopin is certainly not a great composer since he is a very limited composer. All his works involve the piano, and he did …

Unpenned, Emily Sara Austin May 2021

Unpenned, Emily Sara Austin

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Unpenned is the story of a female singer discovering her voice in a world defined by the male composer’s quill. It is told from the perspective of a vocal performance student preparing for her senior recital during a pandemic and explores baroque and romantic styles, eventually moving into contemporary art song, alternative rock and R&B as the student realizes the expanse of narrative and musical forms through which she can express herself. With this musical journey comes an exploration of female characters, some operatic, and some I’ve created based on stereotypes of women as depicted in films, musicals, books and …

Modes Of Infernal Rave Dancing: For Orchestra, Kyle J. Winge May 2021

Modes Of Infernal Rave Dancing: For Orchestra, Kyle J. Winge

Graduate Thesis Collection

Modes of Infernal Rave Dancing is a lively and compact orchestral work combining many elements that would not otherwise belong together. It applies 20th-century harmonic techniques to a simple dance melody as one would hear in the electronic dance genre. The piece begins by emphasizing one pitch, and gradually adds more pitches before presenting the main melody. Each section builds to segments with harsh dissonances. The entire piece relies on the rhythmic pulse, which creates a sense of urgency in the beginning, nearly disappears in the middle, and returns energetically at the finale. My hope is that this work is …

The Role Of Music In The Trauma Narrative And “Storytelling”: Perspectives Of Clinicians, Taylorlyn N. Mehnert May 2021

The Role Of Music In The Trauma Narrative And “Storytelling”: Perspectives Of Clinicians, Taylorlyn N. Mehnert

Masters Theses

There is a lack of detailed literature describing how music is used for expressing and processing the trauma narrative. This study used a constructivist grounded theory approach through an anti-oppressive lens to explore the ways in which music therapists use music in exploring clients’ stories. The term “story” is used as opposed to “narrative” or “memory” to incorporate a broader definition of expression including non-verbal, musical, metaphorical, or any other method the client chooses. Eight board-certified music therapists (MT-BC) were interviewed regarding their use of music in the context of clients’ stories. Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis was used …

Two Pandemics - Making Meaning Of Illness Through The Works Of Thomas Mann And Thomas Glavinic, Samuel Stucky May 2021

Two Pandemics - Making Meaning Of Illness Through The Works Of Thomas Mann And Thomas Glavinic, Samuel Stucky

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

By March 2020, most of the world had gone into varying levels of lockdown to try to prevent further spread of what was proving to be a deceptively deadly disease: COVID-19, commonly referred to as “the Coronavirus.” One way to gauge the effect that a massive, traumatic event such as a global pandemic has on individuals is to analyze how those people write about their experiences. In this study, I examine what the German body of discourse contained and what it can teach regarding two major pandemics that fell one hundred years apart via Thomas Mann’s novella Der Tod in …

The default sounds for symbols can be replaced by recordings that the user creates on location, allowing the user to provide their own sonic reconstructions of the Library’s contents. The Library of Babel breaks language into its constituent parts, …

From Prop To Partner: The Evolution Of Female Roles In American Opera, Mariah J. Berryman May 2021

From Prop To Partner: The Evolution Of Female Roles In American Opera, Mariah J. Berryman

Honors Theses

For many years, women in opera have been in service to their plots. They have always been present but have either been relegated to passive roles in their own stories or actively considered societal outcasts. They were dramatically stereotyped as either airheads or witches, mothers or daughters, love interests or foes to be conquered. And, along with the character stereotypes came typically associated vocal stereotypes. Lighter and higher voices were assigned to roles that portrayed virtue, innocence, and other general characteristics of the “feminine ideal.” Conversely, lower voices were assigned to sinful, outcast, “fallen women.” These vocal stereotypes are especially …

The Effect Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Music On Heart Rate Variability And Mental State Among Runners, Jeni Gustafson May 2021

The Effect Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Music On Heart Rate Variability And Mental State Among Runners, Jeni Gustafson

Masters Theses

The primary purpose of this N-of-1 study was to examine whether running to synchronous, asynchronous, and no music affected the physiological measure of heart rate variability (HRV) and the perceptual measures of rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and experience of flow state while running. In this study, the term synchronous referred to music that is set at a tempo where running pace can synchronize to each beat. The term asynchronous referred to music set at a tempo where it is not possible to synchronize the running pace to each beat. A chest belt that measured heart rate variability via RR …

Taking Her At Her Work: Reconsidering The Legacy Of Alma Mahler, Rachel E. Scott May 2021

Taking Her At Her Work: Reconsidering The Legacy Of Alma Mahler, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Alma Mahler (1879–1964) grew up surrounded by artists in late nineteenth-century Vienna. Despite her musical training, demonstrated passion for music, and publication of several Lieder, Mahler’s identity as a composer has remained overshadowed by narratives surrounding her personal life and those of her husbands and lovers, not to mention the artistic work of her husbands and lovers. Increasingly, however, interest in Alma Mahler as a composer has been nurtured through creative engagement with that legacy, and frequently by women authors and artists. This dissertation explores the existing literature written by and related to Alma Mahler and identifies some approaches for …

Principal Perceptions On The Inclusion Of Music Education And Professional Development Opportunities: A Qualitative Study, Gabriel Woods May 2021

Principal Perceptions On The Inclusion Of Music Education And Professional Development Opportunities: A Qualitative Study, Gabriel Woods

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative case study identifies perspectives that have not yet been explored and documented concerning the difference in attention across school levels when it comes to offering professional development opportunities for music teachers. The majority of previous studies have focused on STEM programming, not the arts. In this study, the researcher interviewed six K-12 principals who aided in deciding whether to include music programs to students and professional development opportunities to teachers. Two principals were interviewed in the different K-12 school levels: elementary, middle, and high schools. The results of this study add to the literature and can foster an …

How Music Shapes Our Identities And Why It Matters: Case Studies Of Professional Musicians, Annabelle C. Linker May 2021

How Music Shapes Our Identities And Why It Matters: Case Studies Of Professional Musicians, Annabelle C. Linker

Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses

Brain research has demonstrated that music uniquely contributes to neural functioning, but little is known about how losing the ability to produce music, which may be inherent to personal identity for professional singers, impacts quality of life. This study explored identity and music in the lives of five well-known vocal music professionals selected because they have publicly talked about the role of music in their lives via books, televised interviews, and documentaries. The careers of three of the individuals were disrupted by neurogenic disease; one lost the ability to sing after treatment for vocal nodules; and the fifth individual remains …
