Singers, Too, Are Human By Jussi Bjorling, Jussi Bjorling
Singers, Too, Are Human By Jussi Bjorling, Jussi Bjorling
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
When I was asked to write a guest column for Musk News, I was a bit puzzled as to the choice of subject. I had never thought of myself as a writer. Upon being offered such an opportunity I was eager for success, but well remembered the story of the two business men who were amateur singers. A dispute arose as to which of them had the better voice, and the two men took the controversy to Giuseppe Verdi, the great Italian composer. Verdi heard them and then turned to one and declared, "You are the worst singer I have …

On The Road With Jussi: An Interview With Frederick Schauwecker
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Frederick Schauwecker was Jussi's long-time accompanist. he worked with several singers, among them Martinelli and Crooks, before he became Jussi's colleague. In the February 26, 1972, issue of Opera News, Mr. Schauwecker reminisced with Morris Springer about the Swedish tenor. We reproduce here, with the kind permission of Opera News, an abridged version of that interview.

Toscanini At The End, Lee Alperin
Toscanini At The End, Lee Alperin
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
In 1954 Arturo Toscanini (1873-1957) chose to include Verdi's A Masked Ball in his NBC Symphony radio broadcasts. For solists, the 87-year-old maestro had in the past few years been relying on a familiar troop of singers: Herva Nelli, Licia Albanese, Giuseppe Valdengo, Jan Peerce, Nicola Moscona, and Robert Merrill, among others. Besides providing Toscanini with a set of able-bodied voices these brave-hearts also accommodated blow-ups. Toscanini himself wanted no superstars; by now he was inclined to consider a singer as simply another instrument of the orchestra. Thus it Might have come as a surprise to Samuel Chotzinoff (Toscanini's liaison …
Two Faces Of Jussi (But One Voice), William C. Clayton
Two Faces Of Jussi (But One Voice), William C. Clayton
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
I discovered Jussi Bjorling in 1953 when I was 18. Like George Jellinek, my awrareness came through a local record store, in my case supplied by an enthusiastic owner who played Bjorling's "Che gellda manina" for me. Though l had earlier embraced di Stefano and Tagliavini, I pretty quickly appreciated what all the JB fuss was about, and eventually I procured Jussi's complete versions of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, Aida. II Trovatore, and various recital albums. Despite my admiration of his voice, however, for many years I was troubled by two faces of Jussi as depicted on two LP albums: …

My wife Doris (Anderson} Pierson and I went to an Embassy of Sweden program on November 9, 2008 in Washington, DC presented by Harald Henrysson, then the Curator of the Jussi Bjorling Museum in Borlange, Sweden. Henrysson's program was entitled "A Jussi Bjorling Music Cafe - Jussi Bjorling in the United States: A Singing Career 1919-1960."
Saeden, Soderstrom The "Iron Gang" Thins Out, Stefan Johansson
Saeden, Soderstrom The "Iron Gang" Thins Out, Stefan Johansson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Two great artists of the Stockholm Opera's "iron gang" have left us with only a few weeks in between: first Erik Saeden, now Elisabeth Soderstrom. The baritone sang for the public, well-preserved vocally and youthful in mind, as late as two days before his passing. The soprano had lived more in her own world for several years. Both had given me a great deal to remember from my first years as a young opera and concert-goer and radio listener. They were heard in divers genres and styles and both had a death-defyingly broad repertoire. They and their colleagues imprinted on …

Investigating The Music Learning Journeys Of A Student From Cyprus: A Case Study, Maria Papazachariou-Christoforou
Investigating The Music Learning Journeys Of A Student From Cyprus: A Case Study, Maria Papazachariou-Christoforou
Visions of Research in Music Education
The purpose of this case study was to explore the music-making and learning practices of a male elementary student from Cyprus in different settings, inside and outside school. It considers that individuals take many different pathways to become musicians. Their journeys might include contexts in a broad educational spectrum from highly structured and sequential, to informal, and enculturating. The study investigated the characteristics and practices of the diverse teaching-learning contexts involving the participant, the intersection of those settings, and the student's perceptions, feelings, and thoughts about the value of music experiences in those settings for his musical growth. The study …

The Centennial Conference: Jussicology! Fellowship! Music!
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Although there is huge slate of exciting events planned for 2011 in Sweden many of our members here may not wish to travel that far (or that expensively!).With that in mind, the Jussi Bjorling Society-USA will host a commemorative conference in St. Peter, MN. at Gustavus Adolphus College, June 22-26. We believe this will be the principal US celebration or Jussi's centennial, and we are very enthusiastic about this opportunity to meet again in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall.

Newly-Found Posters Illuminate The Bjorling Quartet's Activities; Medical Records Shed New Light On David Bjorling's Tragic Death, Harald Henrysson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Few posters were preserved from the Bjorling Quartet's tours. The Bjorling Museum owns four: two of them with date and place, from Leksand 1923 and Ystad 1926, thr other two without that information, but printed in 1923 and 1925. One poster from the Axberg Church near Orebro in 1922 is preserved in that church's fellowship hall, one is reported to exist in Halsingland but has not been found again, and one from the US tour is owned by a Bjorling relative here.

David Bjorling, Part Ii His Career After Studies In Vienna, Harald Henrysson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
David Bjorling's first appearance after his return to Borlange was once more at Folkets Hus on Ascension Day, May 28, 1908. Frequent advertising had not raised much interest, and the audience was not large. Perhaps the reason for that was that a nearby amusement park opened the same day and its opening day party went on until late in the evening. David's varying program with arias, songs, folksongs and duets with baritone Arvid Kull was well received both by the audience and two reviewers.
Jussi Bjorling's Vocal Training, Michael Mayer
Jussi Bjorling's Vocal Training, Michael Mayer
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
The process of training to be a singer, especially an opera singer, is not very well understood by the general public. It is really a combination of learning to play music, as for other instruments, and training the body like a athlete to be the instrument. The musical part is pretty obvious. The singer is going to be expected to perform music at the highest level. The athletic part is less obvious: less obvious because if done well it is not noticeable to the audience. The reason it is necessary to develop the physical coordination of the body to such …

A Centennial Tribute To Jussi Bjorling Part I: New York, Allan Buchalter
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
On October 27,2011- the coldest evening to date of the season in NYC- we were warmed physically and spiritually at the Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church by "A Centennial Tribute to Jussi Bjorling" concert and lecture. Mats Carlsson, tenor, first winner of the Scandinavian Jussi Bjorling Society Prize, Love Derwinger, pianist (also the regular accompanist of Barbara Hendricks), and Bertil Bengtsson, Scandinavian Jussi Bjorling Society co-founder, came from Sweden to preform in this series of seven concerts across the United States.

Jussi Bjorling's Heart Was Beating 200 Beats Per Minute, Marten Rosenqvist
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
The excitement was palpable that evening, May 20, 1958, at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm. The two Swedish opera giants, Birgit Nilsson and Jussi Bjorling, would again meet al the Stockholm Opers in Tosca. The theatre was crowded, and the press present- for tonight's performance could not be anything but magnificent. But already in the first act, something happens. Bjorling cannot sustain the tone. He can only whisper per the lyrics. He had suffered one of his recurring vocal cord problems.

Jussi's Century: The Very Human Voice Of A Pure Musician, Stephan Hastings
Jussi's Century: The Very Human Voice Of A Pure Musician, Stephan Hastings
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
In the history of Western music, the 20th century is the first in which the most important instrumentalists dedicated themselves primarily to the compositions of others, while the performance freedom granted to the great singers becomes steadily more limited due to detailed notation and the iron control of conductors. But it is also the first in which the interpreter can leave evidence of his own creativity through the media of sound recording, And since a disk is a document which is much richer in information and communicative potential than a written score, it seems right to me that the most …
