From “Radical Blunders” To Compositional Solutions: A Form-Functional Perspective On Beethoven’S Early Eroica Continuity-Sketches, Thomas Posen
The Beethoven Journal
Beethoven’s sketches to his third symphony, the Eroica, have fascinated scholars since Nottebohm’s pioneering study of the Eroica Sketchbook in the late nineteenth century. More recently, Alan Gosman and Lewis Lockwood finished a complete transcription of the sketchbook, which has led to a resurgent interest in these sketches. In this article, I re-evaluate Beethoven’s approaches to composing the first movement of the Eroica symphony by reappraising two supposed problems with the first two exposition continuity-sketches. Contrary to prior studies, which have interpreted these reputed compositional problems as “failed experiments” or “radical blunders” (Tovey 1941, 80), I interpret them …
“You Don’T Belong In Nashville!”: Politics, Country Music, And The Reception Of Robert Altman’S Nashville, Dan Blim
Faculty Publications
Robert Altman’s film Nashville (1975) generated a prodigious amount of press commentary following its release. Early on, critics praised the film, but a disappointing box office led many to assume a split between big-city liberal audiences and small-town conservative audiences. Subsequent press coverage connected this divide to both the film’s politics and its use and portrayal of country music, as political pundits, music critics, country music stars, and general audiences weighed in. This essay situates the reception of the film within a shifting country music industry, which was growing increasingly aligned with the Republican Party and increasingly suspicious of new …
The Collaborative Roles Of Music Therapists And Teachers In Working With Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder : An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Estelle Li En Ng
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Music therapists often work in collaboration with teachers or educators to promote the development of adaptive, cognitive, emotional, communication and social domains of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in schools. Collaboration between music therapists and teachers involve the performance of various roles such as providing direct interventions and consultancy services. It is understood from studies that defining roles of team members contribute to successful team work. Therefore, a deeper understanding of how these two team members work together could inform professional development and enhance collaborative work. Yet, there is a lack of a comprehensive overview of how …

Interventions With Acute Psychiatric Patients In Short-Term Music Therapy : A Narrative Review Of The Literature, Napat Tangsujaritpun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Numerous music therapy models have been formulated for implementation in the field of mental healthcare. The purpose of this narrative review was to identify music therapy interventions utilized in short-term music therapy with acute psychiatric patients. Studies that described interventions with acute psychiatric patients in short-term music therapy were selected based on the keyword searches of computerized databases, hand searches, and authoritative texts. Eleven papers met the inclusion criteria. They were published during 2004-2022. The majority of papers were conducted in the USA. …

In fact, a number of clinical studies have been conducted to examine the impact of group singing on patients with dementia. Given the broad range of approaches and strategies employed …

Elementary String Orchestra: A Hybrid Curriculum, Deborah Jeannette Hickey
Elementary String Orchestra: A Hybrid Curriculum, Deborah Jeannette Hickey
Masters Theses
Remote and distance musical instruction can be traced back to the earliest transmissions of radio and television. In the last few decades, it has made considerable strides due to the development of the internet and growing supportive software and online platforms. However, when the COVID-19 virus swept the world, many school districts were forced to convert to full- remote instruction instantaneously. While some unique and beneficial strategies developed out of this, many aspects and strategies proved to be less than ideal and inferior to in-person instruction, particularly where it pertained to performance and ensemble-based instrumental instruction. This project strives to …
An Exploration Of Octatonicism: From Liszt To Takemitsu, Yagan M. Kiely
An Exploration Of Octatonicism: From Liszt To Takemitsu, Yagan M. Kiely
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The octatonic pitch set can be found in the works of many composers since the early nineteenth century, often with different characteristics of the pitch set being exploited by the composers. Much of the literature on octatonicism relates to specific instances in compositions or a specific composer’s approach to it rather than exploring octatonicism from a more holistic perspective. This dissertation serves as a holistic resource for the characteristics of the octatonic pitch set; whether as a scale, especially with regards to common practice harmony; or an unordered set. It does this by considering the contextual historical implications of the …

The Purpose And Process Of Commissioning New Music For Low Brass Instruments: A Guide, Michael Kennard Waddell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The euphonium, trombone, and tuba do not have the breath of solo and chamber music repertoire that other instruments such as the piano or violin do. The majority of works being written for these instruments today is being written via direct commissions and commission consortiums. This research analyzes the importance of expanding the repertoire of these instruments, along with detailed guidance on starting a consortium project and seeing it through to completion. The author, and interviewees Frank Gulino, Adam Frey, and George Alberti, detail their experiences working on consortium projects, and their views on the ethical importance of advancing the …

Playing-Related Medical Injuries And Health Conditions In Collegiate Saxophonists: A Survey Of Saxophonists In North American Universities, Michael Anne Tolan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When compared to other areas of musical performance, medical research on the performing arts is limited when it comes to studies on woodwind players, particularly saxophonists. The gap in research may be attributed to the circumstances surrounding selection processes and identifying subjects for study. For example, saxophonists are not salaried professionals in orchestras, which are commonly pooled for medical research. Establishing contact with saxophonists to conduct studies can prove difficult due to the wide range of genres that utilize the saxophone. Some issues may also be attributed to research methodology. To find the onset of injuries, researchers in previous studies …
