Characteristics Of Music Intervention For Perinatal Depression: A Scoping Review, Cholticha Yosapol
Characteristics Of Music Intervention For Perinatal Depression: A Scoping Review, Cholticha Yosapol
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Various transitions occur in one’s lifetime, shifting life from one phase to another. Pregnancy and childbirth stand out as significant milestones for women. These periods bring forth demands across various dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual, which need ample support for a smooth transition into motherhood. However, pregnant women and new mothers often face heightened risks of stress, anxiety, and perinatal depression. Music intervention has emerged as a promising avenue for alleviating depressive symptoms in this demographic, with numerous studies highlighting its efficacy. In this scoping review, the aim was to delve into existing literature and identify the characteristics …

The Use Of Music As A Legacy Intervention In Palliative Care: A Scoping Review, Phuwadej Vorasowharid
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This scoping review explores the integration of music and legacy interventions within palliative care settings. Legacy interventions, defined as methods focusing on creating personal memorabilia such as books, recordings, or storytelling, allow patients to express emotions and leave a legacy, thereby strengthening bonds with their loved ones. The review aimed to identify the types of music interventions used for conducting legacy work and to understand the experiences and perspectives of patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare providers. A systematic search of electronic databases yielded 14 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate the utilization of various music-based legacy interventions in …

This supplement was designed to help students build a strong foundation in aural training and sight singing by progressing through the core rhythmic and melodic patterns that are found in music. Through the progression of content, students will build skills in pattern recognition and an understanding of how music functions. Rhythms for each section include single and two-part examples as well as pitched examples for use in aural training. Melodies for each section include single line melodies, canons, duets, and chorales. Melodies were designed to be easily accessible for students with basic keyboard skills, and were written without articulation and …
Music As Art: A Study Of Expressing Emotion Through Music And Art, Cadence Helleson
Music As Art: A Study Of Expressing Emotion Through Music And Art, Cadence Helleson
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
People have been expressing emotion with different art forms throughout history. Emotion has always been something that is hard for us to explain with words, so we have turned to painting, drawing, dancing, and music to add a visual or auditory explanation to what we feel. Depending on the chords or colors that are used, music and art can evoke specific emotions. There are many similarities between art and music, especially in the terms used to describe it. Both artists and musicians refer to their work as “compositions” and “pieces.” The musical term “timbre” means tone color and refers to …

Discussions And Creations: Experiences Of Black Music Therapy Graduate Students Building Community And Belonging, Rebekah Irene Spann
Theses and Dissertations--Music
There is currently a lack of racial diversity within the music therapy field and a lack of research on the experiences of Black music therapy graduate students wanting to build community and belonging. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of three Black graduate music therapy students at the University of Kentucky seeking to build community and belonging with their Black peers. To further understand the experiences of these Black graduate music therapy students, this study followed participatory action research (PAR) methodology. Throughout the research process, I worked with participants to shape the project in a way …

Theses and Dissertations--Music
This project illuminates the history of educational concerts of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and reveals a legacy of performances for young audiences, today’s educational innovations, and the orchestra’s evolving mission to serve young people. Concerts for young people are an important facet of the history of American orchestras. Today, these concerts and other educational programs are essential to increase the accessibility of orchestral music.
The PSO’s history highlights the close relationship of American orchestras with an educational mission from their early years to the present. After an overview of the origins of permanent orchestras and the national context of …
Walking Carefully Towards Bridging The Gap: Exploring Australian Music Educator Voices About Teaching Indigenous Music, Dawn Joseph, Bradley Merrick
Walking Carefully Towards Bridging The Gap: Exploring Australian Music Educator Voices About Teaching Indigenous Music, Dawn Joseph, Bradley Merrick
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Facilitating an inclusive pedagogy to close the gap that exists within the teaching of Indigenous Knowledge in Australia is a tall order for many teachers. This paper draws on responses to a national study and explores how music educators include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music and culture into their practice. An online survey (December 2022-February 2023, N=109) informed the findings. Using thematic analysis, two themes (teaching challenges and opportunities, and bridging the gap) are discussed and key recommendations offered. Findings suggest that walking carefully towards bridging the gap is an opportunity for educational change in contemporary Australian classrooms.
Hidden Treasures From The Classical Era: Three Idiomatic And Accessible Settings Of The Mass, Paul Von Kampen
Hidden Treasures From The Classical Era: Three Idiomatic And Accessible Settings Of The Mass, Paul Von Kampen
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
How fortunate we are to live in an age where the world of choral literature seemingly continues to expand at an exponential rate. Since the advent of the Internet, it has never been easier to deliver compositions, performances, and research to a global audience. Opportunities to program new, undiscovered, or underperformed pieces are so vast that conductors could easily feel the effects of information overload. In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, Barry Schwartz details the dilemma of having an abundance of choice in situations that originally had very few. Attempting to buy jeans, the …

Applications Of Video Game Music Theory For The Highschool/College Theory Curriculum, Daniel L. Thompson
Applications Of Video Game Music Theory For The Highschool/College Theory Curriculum, Daniel L. Thompson
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper covers the origins of video game audio and the technical limitations that effected what composers could write. Several audio excerpts have been transcribed with roman numeral analysis. The goal of this project was to determine if musical excerpts from video games could supplement an existing highschool/college theory curriculum. Theory techniques ranging from simple cadences to secondary function chords are present throughout the pieces. The pieces are from a variety of games and composers from 1983 - 2014. Overall, many of the compositions contain excellent examples of theory techniques. These excerpts would best be utilized alongside existing theory material. …
An Exploration And Performance Of Underrepresented Composers For Cello, Anna M. Watrous
An Exploration And Performance Of Underrepresented Composers For Cello, Anna M. Watrous
Libraries Award for Undergraduate Scholarship
As I was preparing for my senior degree cello recital (the performance component of this thesis) last summer, I realized that all the composers I planned on programming were famous composers that were white men. As a woman cellist, teacher, and arts advocate, I knew this was not the story that I wanted to tell through my recital. I realized that there was no reason to wait until after graduation when I was “finished learning” to be an advocate for those underrepresented in the arts, I could start with this recital. Through the process of programming, preparing, and performing this …
Revolutionary Songs From Myanmar: Reconsidering Scholarly Perspectives On Protest Music, Heather Maclachlan
Revolutionary Songs From Myanmar: Reconsidering Scholarly Perspectives On Protest Music, Heather Maclachlan
Department of Music Faculty Publications
Since the February 1, 2021 military coup in Myanmar, Burmese musicians have been creating and circulating anti- coup songs. This article describes a representative sample of these songs, explaining how the lyrics reference important tropes in Burmese life and history. Further, the article argues that these anti-coup songs, while they can be understood as protest music, do not fit precisely into categories previously delineated for protest songs. Nor do these songs provide a neat answer to the question that scholars so often pose of protest music, to wit: do these songs work to persuade listeners to take an anti-authoritarian position? …

The Effect Of Different Warm-Up Durations On Subjective And Objective Measures Of Singing In Choral Singers Over The Age Of 55, Jeremy A. Chesman
The Effect Of Different Warm-Up Durations On Subjective And Objective Measures Of Singing In Choral Singers Over The Age Of 55, Jeremy A. Chesman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Choral singing is a popular activity in the United States. Choral singers are often encouraged to warm up vocally before they sing. Considering voice conditions, like presbyphonia, that can develop shortly after retirement, more research about vocal warm-ups is needed for those over the age of 55. This study assesses the effects of various durations of vocal warm-ups on subjective and objective measures of the singing voice using a within-groups design with randomized condition order. Nine participants performed vocal warm-ups for 0, 5, 10, and 15 minutes. A song sample was then recorded and sent to two expert raters who …
Student Perspectives Of Music Courses In A Southwest Missouri School District: An Exploratory Case Study, Mary Elisa Wren
Student Perspectives Of Music Courses In A Southwest Missouri School District: An Exploratory Case Study, Mary Elisa Wren
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate student personal perspectives (grades 8-12) of music courses, their value, and what music courses they might choose or recommend. Numerous researchers and educators have debated and researched how music course offerings and instructional approaches used are central to the relevance, inclusiveness, accessibility, and equity in music education (Abramo, 2011; Clauhs & Cremata, 2020; Cooper, 2013; Green, 2006; Kelly & Heath, 2015). However, few researchers have investigated how students think about the motivations and barriers to different types of music courses. A semi-structured interview was used to explore secondary music students’ (a) perceptions, …

“Shot Into The Air Like A Rocket”: Climax In The Lieder Of Alma Mahler, Rachel E. Scott
“Shot Into The Air Like A Rocket”: Climax In The Lieder Of Alma Mahler, Rachel E. Scott
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
The appropriation of musical climax as an act of subversion became a common claim in feminist analysis of music by women composers. The focus on the tension and release in Western classical music has been called out as overtly masculine and even violent. This article investigates claims that perceived differences in Alma Mahler’s musical climax are gendered and subversive. To do so, it identifies where the climaxes fall in Alma Mahler’s published songs, considers the musical climaxes in relation to textual climaxes, and compares these to the climaxes in the contemporaneous work of her composition teacher Alexander Zemlinsky. It argues …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences And Teaching Strategies Of Private Music Instructors Working With Elementary School Students, Ana Maria Fusu-Kommidi
Theses and Dissertations
The lack of consistent elementary musical education in the United States has sustained a steady demand for private music instruction. Private instruction, however, does not usually align with the general music education standards, or the school requirements. There is a lack of research about private music instructors’ role in music education for elementary-aged students. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and teaching strategies of private music instructors who supplement elementary students' school-based music education. The two research questions were
RQ1: What are the experiences of private music instructors who supplement elementary students' school-based music education?
RQ2: …

’90s “It Girls”: Britpop At The Postfeminist Intermezzo, Benjamin Halligan
’90s “It Girls”: Britpop At The Postfeminist Intermezzo, Benjamin Halligan
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
In considering the Britpop genre of music and its moment of popularity in the mid/late-1990s, the few female-fronted Britpop groups created space for more compelling articulations of existential matters than were to be found in standard Britpop fare. This article argues these articulations are most appropriately read as arising from a moment of feminist thought in transition: a premature “victory,” under the sign of postfeminism, in which the struggles of Second Wave feminists could be seen to have delivered equality. This moment results in an encroaching and contested sense of entry into maturity, and a loss of youth. The groups …
