Ma Fin Est Mon Commencement (My End Is My Beginning): An Allegory In Five Scenes, Randall Snyder Jan 1973

Ma Fin Est Mon Commencement (My End Is My Beginning): An Allegory In Five Scenes, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

Dramatis personae: Artist, Narrator, Chorus

Synopsis

PROLOG

Perceiving society as decadent, an artist ruminates over his existence. A narrator describes the chorus as they reluctantly assemble on a black box stage.

SCENE 1

Painful thoughts force the artist to remember his past as essentially a trilogy of forces: (1) Caritas – mystical religious feelings embodied in the Latin liturgy; (2) the narrow space between the five lines – an allusion to the musical staff and his career as a composer; (3) post puterbific thoughts – physical, carnal instincts. The chorus dismisses the composer’s concerns as superficial. They speak of their …

Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder Jan 1973

Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

Noumenon: Synopsis

The work, which perhaps could best be described as a “metaphysical comedy”, consists of three levels:

1) the biography of the unnamed dilettante artist-philosopher “__”
2) personal interpolations by the biographer, Russel Stanford
3) editor’s commentary by Randall Snyder

Stanford, in spite of a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, agrees to write the biography. During this period his health degenerates and he increasingly imposes his own irrelevant opinions into the biography (his remarks are all indented, using the Palatino font, and further identified by the use of the small case “i”. The “biography” uses the New York …

The Mayer Wetherill Collection: Music Of The Nineteenth Century, Peter Korff Jan 1973

The Mayer Wetherill Collection: Music Of The Nineteenth Century, Peter Korff

The Courier

The Wetherill collection contains many reductions, adaptations, and arrangements of music by the major figures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are several bound collections of music for piano and violin based on "favorite opera melodies." There are also, of course, many works by the masters themselves. The true worth of this collection, however, is not to be found in anyone rara avis, but rather in the quality of the whole as representative of the chamber music of its time.

Musical Realism Of Modest Mussorgsky In The Songs And Dances Of Death, Lynn A. Howard Jan 1973

Musical Realism Of Modest Mussorgsky In The Songs And Dances Of Death, Lynn A. Howard

All Master's Theses

This investigation proposes that the Russian composer, Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881), was one of the foremost masters of musical realism. The song cycle, The Songs and Dances of Death, is presented as an outstanding and representative example of the creative efforts of the composer. It is analyzed from the standpoint of prosody, tonality, melody, and harmony.

In order to aid in comprehension, the first portion of the paper deals with the Russian environment and the development of the ideals of Mussorgsky.

A Structural Comparison Of Traditional Opera And Music Drama, Charles H. Stephens Jan 1973

A Structural Comparison Of Traditional Opera And Music Drama, Charles H. Stephens

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a structural comparison of traditional opera and music drama. It uses Wagner's criticism of traditional opera, and his plan of incorporating the individual arts into a unified art form, to contrast the two forms. An identification of motives from a section of Wagner's Die Walkure further demonstrates the unifying factors in music drama.

Dichterliebe: A Partnership In Irony, Gary L. Bankes Jan 1973

Dichterliebe: A Partnership In Irony, Gary L. Bankes

All Master's Theses

The paper discusses the irony of love as expressed in the Dichterliebe song cycle of Robert Schumann on the poems of Heinrich Heine.

Schumann's relationship to the Romantic era is discussed, as well as the basic musical style of the work. The irony inherent in five of the songs exposed, as are the musical techniques and devices through which Schumann expresses it musically.

The Dichterliebe is shown to be a partnership, where the words and the music benefit and compliment each other.

Michelangelo Songs: Characteristics Of Style And Interpretation, Dennis David Daigler Jan 1973

Michelangelo Songs: Characteristics Of Style And Interpretation, Dennis David Daigler

All Master's Theses

This paper presents an analysis of the style characteristics found in the songs of Hugo Wolf, a great composer of German Lied. His style was greatly influenced by Wagner's harmonic and vocal practices. Wolf continued earlier composers' concerns with the proper expression of poetry through music.

An interpretation of the Michelangelo Songs shows Wolf's attempts to achieve balance between the voice and piano. A study of them is rewarding for a singer.

Compositional Techniques Of Alexei Haieff's Saints' Wheel: Piano Variations On A Circle Of Fifths, Candida Labrecque Jan 1973

Compositional Techniques Of Alexei Haieff's Saints' Wheel: Piano Variations On A Circle Of Fifths, Candida Labrecque

All Master's Theses

This covering paper presents a study of Alexei Haieff's Saints' Wheel, a piano variation on the circle of fifths.

Numerous compositional techniques used by the composer were identified in their contemporary context. The use of tonality was studied with reference to Haieff's oriental background. His identification as a neo-classicist was verified and his distinctive contributions to that community explored.

A synthesis of the study resulted in an evaluation of the composer's use of the circle of fifths.

Structural Developments Of The Violin And Bow As They Affected Violin Playing Technique From 1775 To 1850, Robert Donn Anderson Jan 1973

Structural Developments Of The Violin And Bow As They Affected Violin Playing Technique From 1775 To 1850, Robert Donn Anderson

All Master's Theses

This paper represents a study of the alterations that were made in the structure and design of the violin and bow during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These alterations were the result of the increasingly more difficult technical demands that were placed on the violinists of the late eighteenth century by composers of that period. Once the violin and bow had been restructured to meet those demands, many new violin playing techniques were introduced.

Recommendations included additional research.

A Proposed Elementary And Secondary Public School Music Curriculum For The Grinnell-Newburg Community School District, Arthur William Emry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem which was considered in this study was the need to develop an improved music curriculum for the Grinnell-Newburg Community Schools. The need for a vertically articulated curriculum was substantiated in a report by the North Central Association Evaluation Team which visited the Grinnell High School in March, 1973. The present music curriculum was investigated to determine the extent of the needs. Considered were the number of music courses offered, the written objectives of each course, the coordination of the courses by the teachers, the number of music teachers, and the projection of the school enrollment.
