Verdi's Settings Of Shakespeare : From Play To Liberetto To Opera, Ann S. Earon

Senior Scholar Papers

As a Senior Scholar pursuing the topic, Verdi's Settings of Shakespeare: From Play to Libretto to Opera, I have endeavoured to study a project relevant to my majors, Music and English. During first semester, I carefully analysed Shakespeare's plays, Macbeth, Othello and Falstaff. The highlight of my project was in January when I travelled to New York City and spent the day working with the Metropolitan Opera Guild. I was also able to see a performance of Verdi's Othello with Jon Vickers in the lead role. During the second semester, I studied the musical aspects of the compositions. I spent …

Single String Improvisation On The Guitar, Allan Jonathan Galante Jan 1974

Single String Improvisation On The Guitar, Allan Jonathan Galante

All Master's Theses

During the past decade the guitar has become increasingly popular. As a result, there are many more students who wish to participate in legitimate programs of study in all areas of guitar, especially jazz guitar. Formal instruction, especially in jazz guitar, is available on a very limited basis.

Guitar players are demanding sophisticated courses of study incorporating the fundamentals of music and are demanding that these courses be made a part of the music curriculum at colleges and universities. Therefore, it would be possible to earn a music degree in guitar performance.

This study is an examination of the styles found in the Biblical Songs by Antonin Dvorak, a leading Bohemian composer of the nineteenth century. They cycle, originally set in Czech to the Bohemian Book of Psalms, may, with some notation changes, also be sung in German or English.

Dvorak's composition attempts to achieve a balance between the smooth, flowing vocal line and a rhythmically challenging accompaniment. A study of this cycle is rewarding for the singer.
