The Masculine And Feminine Encounter In Song : An Analysis Of Six Poems As Set By Both Male And Female Composers, Catherine Bodo Schoew Jan 1978

The Masculine And Feminine Encounter In Song : An Analysis Of Six Poems As Set By Both Male And Female Composers, Catherine Bodo Schoew

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

That fusion of poetry and music which we call song has provoked controversy, evoked ecstasy, and has tempted nearly every composer sometime during his musical career. What is it that drives a man to take immortal words and endeavor to transcend them in music? Indeed few composers have ever been truly successful, but even the idea of "perfect song" stimulates argument. The well-worn controversy of the importance of music above the words, and vice versa, has never been resolved, nor is it likely to be. The greatest problem lies in the fact that a poem existed as an independent work …

Jean Thomas' American Folk Song Festival : British Balladry In Eastern Kentucky., Marshall A. Portnoy Jan 1978

Jean Thomas' American Folk Song Festival : British Balladry In Eastern Kentucky., Marshall A. Portnoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Serious musicological research initiated in the first decades of the twentieth century in America uncovered vast riches of British folk music that had been transplanted to these shores by early pioneers. In the mountains of Appalachia, traditional British ballads remained miraculously unspoiled, and distinguished researchers from Britain and America published many volumes of such songs. Jean Thomas, a legal stenographer born in eastern Kentucky in 1881, became fascinated with this phenomenon. She came to believe that an annual festival of mountain music would help ensure the survival of this art and, in 1930, she founded the American Folk Song Festival. …

An Analytical Study Of "The Masque Of Angels", Linda Psaute Jan 1978

An Analytical Study Of "The Masque Of Angels", Linda Psaute

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the music of “The Masque of Angels” articulates and supports the drama. The various musical techniques which make the complete composition will be examined to show how the composer draws them into one statement and proves himself the dramatist. The effect of the music on the text and that of the text on the musical construction is investigated to gain a clearer concept of the composer’s intent and the opera’s value to the twentieth century listener.
