The Orff Approach To Music Education: Objectives And Materials For Grades One Through Six, Barbara P. Spieler
The Orff Approach To Music Education: Objectives And Materials For Grades One Through Six, Barbara P. Spieler
Theses
This study investigates the relationship between skill objectives in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to elementary music education and Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. The research begins with a detailed analysis of skill objectives as outlined in Music for Children, the foundational curriculum series for Orff-Schulwerk. These objectives are systematically ordered and examined for their developmental structure. The analysis reveals a clear sequence, beginning with fundamental abilities such as speech and rhythmic movement, progressing toward more advanced competencies including instrumental performance, melodic improvisation, and ensemble coordination.
The second stage of the study maps these Orff-Schulwerk objectives onto Piaget’s stages of …

An Analysis Of Roberto Gerhard's "Libra", Jeffrey Lynn Miller
An Analysis Of Roberto Gerhard's "Libra", Jeffrey Lynn Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Libra (1968), for mixed chamber ensemble, is one of the last works by the Anglo-Spanish composer Roberto Gerhard (1896-1970). Analysis of this work reveals that it employs a variety of compositional techniques, including pitch cells, serialism, folk elements, and structures based primarily on texture and timbre. This multiplicity of means reflects Gerhard's background, which included beginnings in Spanish nationalism and later work as a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg. Libra is unified through the dramatic combination of the various elements, the use of a limited number of motives, and the possible influence of a secret autobiographical program.

A Conductor's Study Of The First Movement Of Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, Allan Coleman Sholl
A Conductor's Study Of The First Movement Of Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, Allan Coleman Sholl
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to become acquainted with the first movement of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony in the same manner as a conductor would when preparing the work for performance. Dr. William Dehning stated in his doctoral thesis: “The correct execution of any music imposes a great responsibility on the conductor of that music to determine what the composer might have intended.” The areas of concern to be discussed in this thesis, then, include analysis, thoughts on aesthetic and stylistic qualities, and some historical accounts relating directly to the Fifth Symphony.

A Survey Of The Keyboard Prelude, Bonnie Fansler Mcarthur
A Survey Of The Keyboard Prelude, Bonnie Fansler Mcarthur
Masters Theses
A study of the prelude, the oldest form of idiomatic music for keyboard instruments, offers insight into the heart of piano music. This thesis, a survey of the genre, traces the evolution of the prelude from its roots in the organ improvisations of the fifteenth century to the present century. Although the paper deals exclusively with piano preludes in the chapters after "Preludes of J. S. Bach," the chapters devoted to the organ and harpsichord preludes reveal crucial information necessary to enlightened appreciation of the development of the genre.
Originally a purely functional piece, the prelude allowed the performer to …

The Use Of Singing To Improve Articulatory Accuracy In A Child With Apraxia And Dysarthria, Elizabeth Eileen Bailey
The Use Of Singing To Improve Articulatory Accuracy In A Child With Apraxia And Dysarthria, Elizabeth Eileen Bailey
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
A single subject, diagnosed as having severe oral apraxia and dysarthria, participated in an eight-week research experiment designed to study the effects of singing on speech articulation. A simultaneous treatment design was used in which the subject participated in both the e xperimental and control conditions. In the control condition spoken words were repeated by the subject, while in the experimental condition the words were sung. The words used were the lyrics to two popular folk songs. Articulatory accuracy (intelligibility) was judged by two graduate level speech therapists, based on audiotape samples of the subject's responses, recorded on a "Language …
The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff
The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this study was to assess how young children between the ages of one and four years develop rhythm skills. The project was a pilot study conducted at 11 preschools and day care centers in Stockton, California, and included 60 children. Thirty behaviors comprised the test of various aspects of rhythmic performance. The children were video-taped and the tapes were then analyzed. By examining how many children in a particular age group could perform a particular task, a sequence became apparent. This body of research can now be used as a basis for further studies with the aim …

The Melodic Structure And Form Of Norwegian Lullabies (Bansuller) From The Valleys Of Valdres, Gudbrandsdalen, And Osterdalen, Elbjorg Keyn Lundstrom
Master's Theses
Problem
This study analyzes a significant group of lullabies collected from three of the principal valleys in Norway. A detailed analysis may show the extent of centonization within the lullabies and may reveal aspects of the tonal inflection of these melodies.
Method
This study gives a general description of the lullaby. It also presents an annotated listing of collections and a summary of previous studies done in this area. With the help of traditional techniques and computer technology, the motives from 154 melodies were analyzed.
Results
The analysis resulted in the discovery that the lullabies consist to a large degree …
