Masters Theses
The compositional use of Guillaume de Machaut's rondeau Rose, liz, printemps (Rose, lily, spring) is intended to be a modern reflection of the social, religious, and political trends of fourteenth century Europe.
While the thirteenth century witnessed the perfecting of a universal philosophy that reconciled revelation and reason, the divine and the human, the religious and the political in one unbroken and harmonious order of thought, the fourteenth century perceived each arena of thought as independent in itself and not subject to the others.
Similarly, through isolation and independent use of Machaut's melodic and rhythmic motives in composition for chamber …

Cape Verdean Funana: Voice Of The Badius, Susan Hurley-Glowa
Cape Verdean Funana: Voice Of The Badius, Susan Hurley-Glowa
School of Music Dissertations and Theses
What is funana? The short answer is that it is a musical genre from the Cape Verde Islands. A more thorough answer to this question could take many forms depending on who you are and what your relationship to the music is. My goal has been to understand, . identify, and describe funana I s essential features from many different angles based on what I have learned about it from Cape Verdeans, books, films, recordings, and from- my own observations.
I have arranged this paper into sections that represent three different views of funana. The first focuses on funana in …

“A Splendid Time Is Guaranteed For All,” Sgt. Pepper’S Lonely Hearts Club Band: A Brief Consideration, Randall Snyder
Randall Snyder Compositions
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the 13th of 18 Beatles albums, released in the United States on June 1, 1967, has come to be regarded as one of the seminal artifacts of popular culture of the 20th century. This short paper explores aspects of this music that reached such a broad audience, in particular, some observations of the albums’ astonishing textual and musical diversity as well as less-obvious commonalities that bind the 13 songs with a logic and unity rarely found in popular music.
