The primary purpose of this paper is to serve as a summation for most of the course work and activities involved with the Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy degree. This paper will examine various aspects of teaching jazz at the college level as well as examine common practice jazz repertoire from the performer's standpoint. The pieces featured on the corequisite jazz pedagogy recital, all of which were chosen because of their instructional value, will serve as the primary examples for discussion.

Music composition in the twentieth century is an eclectic discipline. For the past one hundred years composers have employed a vast array of techniques to express their music, more so than in any other era in history. No universally accepted "common practice" exists for the contemporary writer. Although certain aesthetic considerations regarding style, form, and content are pondered by the composer, their applications vary widely. The composer is compelled to create not only a cohesive piece of music, but also define the very compositional parameters that are to be used-and these parameters quite often are different for every composition. New Computer Software, Cd-Roms, And Videodiscs In K-12 Music Education: What Music Educators And Media Specialists Need To Know : A Selected Annotated Bibliography, Brent A. Andrews

Graduate Research Papers

This study identified new music education resources in CD-Rom, videodisc, and computer software formats created from 1990-1995. Each item was evaluated according to its effectiveness in meeting the three different domains of learning; affective, cognitive, and psychomotor. The study also identified items that exhibited multicultural diversity. The resulting annotated bibliography lists twenty-two resources with critical evaluations of use to music teachers and library media specialists.

The Triumph Of Timelessness Over Time In Hindemith's "Turandot Scherzo" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson

Hindemith's title of his four-movement von Weber suite of 1943 poses a problem. The composer's characteristic reticence about his sources delayed their documentation for some twenty years, whereupon it was found that the Symphonic Metamorphosis was based, not only on themes, but on complete pieces. Rather than "thematic transformation," the "metamorphosis" of the title would thus be more accurately regarded as "recomposition," in which changes of tone system, timbre, harmony, rhythm, and form, in addition to the melody itself, transform every level and component of the original composition's structure. Blues For You Johnny: Johnny Dodds And His "Wild Man Blues" Recordings Of 1927 And 1938, Gene H. Anderson

Shortly after Johnny Dodd's death Sidney Bechet invited Johnny's brother to join his New Orleans Feetwarmers in a recording honoring Bechet's hometown musical colleague and lifelong friend. Although Baby Dodds pronounced "Blues for You, Johnny," recorded in Chicago on September 6, 1940, a "fine tribute," Down Beat found vocalist Herb Jeffries "from hunger on blues." A more fitting memorial would have been "Wild Man Blues" cut by Bechet a few months previously. Said to be his favorite number, "Wild Man Blues" was recorded by Dodds three times in 1927 and once again in 1938. This study examines Johnny Dodds's style …

In this presentation we will show how the ImprovisationBuilder framework was adapted to our compositions for pianists and computers. Software design issues include: capturing, transforming, and realizing MIDI piano data, and an easy-to-use graphical interface for altering parameters during performance. Compositional issues include: the causal responsorial aspect of the ImprovisationBuilder output, and varying the small-scale event and gestural levels while preserving the large-scale structure among multiple performances. The presentation will discuss the compositional and performance importance of these issues and show how each of these issues was handled within the ImprovisationBuilder framework. This work is a three-movement sonata conceived in the traditional classical forms of sonata-allegro, song, and rondo, but using a greatly broadened definition of tonality. While the movements are rooted in B, E, and B, respectively, the resources employed to establish, maintain, and develop these tonal centers include many other techniques in addition to traditional functional harmony.

Making "Music At The Margins"? A Social And Cultural Analysis Of Xinyao In Singapore, Lily Kong

Formalist critics and aestheticians have argued that music does not possess any kind of "extra-musical" significance, that there is no meaning beyond the form and structural relations of the notes. For them, music exemplifies the laws of mathematical harmony and proportion rather than the social and political contexts within which it is produced, reproduced and consumed. This view has been challenged by a number of social theorists: Max Weber, Theodor Adorno and Edward Said have all argued for an understanding of music within its social, cultural, economic and political contexts.
