Text And Data Mining For Pianists? Bringing Digital Humanities To A Graduate Music Research Methods Course Through Topic Modeling, Taylor J. Greene

Library Articles and Research

This article provides an example of the successful integration of text and data mining (TDM) into the Research Methods for Performers course, a required course for students in the Keyboard Collaborative Arts (KCA) Master of Music (MM) program at Chapman University. This course is similar in scope and content to the course frequently titled Music Bibliography at other institutions, and the methods described also apply to such courses. Incorporating TDM into this course effectively introduced data-focused research methods to performing arts students and expanded the students’ understanding of the scope and possibilities of research in music through the application of …

Experimental Document Analysis—An Analytical Framework For Document Design, Niels W. Lund Jan 2024

Experimental Document Analysis—An Analytical Framework For Document Design, Niels W. Lund

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In this paper I will present an analytical framework for future documents, an experimental document analysis providing support for document design. The American economist, Herbert A. Simon outlined how to design an artificial object in his work "The Sciences of the Artificial" (1969, 1996) and described how this can be done in a systematic way, by a science of design. Simon describes the design process as a matter of finding possible alternatives among the potential optimal alternatives and finding a satisficing solution, by which he means a solution in-between satisfactory solutions and optimal solutions which can work in real life, …

An Assessment Of The Utilization Of The National Opportunity To Learn Standards In Middle-Level Music Education, Taylor Brooke Browning

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this research was to gain the music educators’ perspectives on the implementation of the 2020 National Opportunity to Learn Standards in West Virginia’s public middle school general music programs. A qualitative phenomenological approach was utilized to gather music educators’ perceptions of whether music programs in West Virginia are providing curricula aligned with the National Opportunity to Learn Standards. Through a combination of convenience and snowball sampling, 20 West Virginia public middle school general music educators were identified, and one-on-one, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Findings indicate a majority of the music programs were somewhat aligned with the National …

Teaching Improvisation To Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Misha F. Guderian

Graduate Research Showcase

It is the music teacher’s duty to provide their students with opportunities to express themselves through the creation of music. This literature review explores the current research about teaching musical composition to students with intellectual disabilities. Each article selected for review was published in 2015 or later in a music education journal sharing peer-reviewed scholarly articles about current trends and issues in music education. Though only Clipper & Lee’s study (2021) relates exclusively to teaching composition, many of the best practices for teaching general music to students with intellectual disabilities can be directly applied to teaching composition. This review analyzes …

Exploring Inequity Of Preparation In Elementary General Music Methods Among Undergraduate Music Education Students, David Destefano Jan 2024

Exploring Inequity Of Preparation In Elementary General Music Methods Among Undergraduate Music Education Students, David Destefano

Graduate Research Showcase

Most instrumental music education students plan to teach secondary music (orchestra/band). In reality, some instrumental music education graduates end up teaching elementary general music (EGM). Because of traditional university programs that separate music education students into tracks based on instrumental or vocal specialization, instrumental music education students might not receive adequate training in elementary general music methods (EGMM). The purpose of this paper is to show the need for equity of EGM preparation for both vocal and instrumental music education students. In addition to reading current research on this topic, I collected data about undergraduate training in EGMM through a …

Proactive Classroom Management In Elementary Music, Gregory Jacot Jan 2024

Proactive Classroom Management In Elementary Music, Gregory Jacot

Graduate Research Showcase

The elementary music classroom is a different environment than the normal elementary classroom, and requires careful attention to classroom management. Rather than only focusing on reactive classroom management, teachers should consider using proactive strategies to enhance their teaching and the classroom experience. Building positive relationships with students, both in and out of the classroom, will make them more receptive to corrective actions if necessary, and building strong relationships with parents and guardians can help address individual challenges that may arise. Designing lessons with thought towards student interest, visuals, pacing, teacher proximity and participation, and physiological needs of students will help …

An Examination Of The Strategies And Limitations For Engaging Parents In Urban Music Programs, Cory Spencer Robinson Jan 2024

An Examination Of The Strategies And Limitations For Engaging Parents In Urban Music Programs, Cory Spencer Robinson

Graduate Research Showcase

Urban music educators face unique challenges not encountered by their suburban and rural counterparts. A challenge that many urban music educators face is that of consistent and meaningful parent engagement. Urban music educators face issues engaging parents such as a lack of communication, cultural barriers and a lack of action that is ultimately out of the educator’s control. This can lead to low retention of students in the urban music program, difficulties managing negative student behavior, and overall poor program outcomes. Some possible solutions that may assist the urban music educator in engaging parents are engaging the community of the …

Louise Farrenc: A Woman Composer's Voice Rising Out Of Obscurity, Allika Polowchak Jan 2024

Louise Farrenc: A Woman Composer's Voice Rising Out Of Obscurity, Allika Polowchak

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a prolific composer, performer, and teacher of art music in Romantic-era France. Widely regarded during her lifetime for her incredible natural talent and hard work, her compositions fell into obscurity after her death due to general disinterest in women’s contributions to art. As Louise Farrenc started to become more recognized in the later 20th century, efforts were focused on reviving her instrumental works, but little is known about her choral and vocal pieces to this day.

“Jesus Freaks” Youth-Group Bands And The Power Of Christian Rock (1992–2000), Leah Payne

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

“What will people think,” Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Smith asked thousands of young evangelical fans in 1996, “when they hear that I’m a Jesus Freak?” This trio of young men “on fire for God,” who performed as DC Talk, were the biggest thing in CCM in the 1990s. Their 1995 album Jesus Freak portrayed conservative evangelical youths as rock-and- roll rebels. “Welcome to the Freak Show,” the Jesus Freak tour, filled stadiums, and their high-energy, slickly produced concerts were teaming with screaming devotees. Fans pointed up to the sky as the band sang, “Jesus is the way,” in …

More Than Just Her Black Bottom: An Exploration And Analysis Of The Legacy Of Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Zachary Brundidge

CSU Tower Day

The blues is a rich musical tradition based in the music styling of African Americans in the Deep South circa 1860. With origins in spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, the blues offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of African Americans. One of the earliest pioneers in the blues was Columbus native, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Known as the "Mother of Blues", Ma Rainey left an indelible mark on audiences she performed for and musicians she worked with. However, when she passed away in her hometown of Columbus, Georgia, a local newspaper obituary listed her occupation as a "housekeeper," …

Purpose Makes Practice: Testing The Efficacy Of A Proposed Framework For Teaching Self-Regulation Skills In The Violin Lesson, Hannah Kabrick Jan 2024

Purpose Makes Practice: Testing The Efficacy Of A Proposed Framework For Teaching Self-Regulation Skills In The Violin Lesson, Hannah Kabrick

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Development of self-regulatory (SR) skills in musicians is crucial for the self- examination necessary for successful practice. Teaching methods that facilitate SR skills can help musicians become independent in the practice room. The first aim of this study was to design a framework for teaching that includes a five-step thinking-action sequence that will allow participants to evaluate their own playing during practice and equips them to enact necessary changes to their technique to bring their playing closer to a more proficient result. The second aim of this study was to use microanalysis with a cross-case comparative design to test the …

The Chicago Blues, Luke J. Sunderland Jan 2024

The Chicago Blues, Luke J. Sunderland

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

In my presentation, I will explain how financial institutions and racial segregation influenced the development of Chicago Blues. Songs by Muddy Waters and Eddie Boyd will be used as examples to show the hidden transcript in songwriting. The concept of hidden transcript is the idea that phrases in song lyrics might contain a different meaning for an average listener, but in reality, it holds a subtext that would be evident to those for whom the song was originally written. For example, Eddie Boyd writes a song that seems to be talking about a failing relationship between a man and a …

Got To Give It Up: Why United States Courts Should Stop Hearing Music Copyright Infringement Cases And Allow Experts To Determine "Substantial Similarity", Alexander J. Loverich Bernard

Duquesne Law Review

Mark Twain wrote in 1903, "[w]henever a copyright law is to be made or altered, then the idiots assemble."1 The expansion of copyright protection has made copyright law the most important legal regulation in the field of entertainment law.2 As a result of stricter regulation through judicial verdicts, music copyright disputes have left inequitable resolutions for artists of all backgrounds.3 This Article suggests a twofold, alternative approach to litigation in resolving music copyright infringement disputes: (1) the use of Expert Determination (ED) through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to evaluate "substantial similarity" at the trial level, …

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education

In this lesson titled "Music as a Time Capsule: Connecting Personal and Cultural History Through Music," students will explore how music can act as a powerful tool for storytelling, preserving personal and cultural moments in history. By analyzing song lyrics and their contexts, students will understand how music reflects both individual identities and broader societal experiences. The lesson encourages students to engage deeply with music’s emotional and historical significance and challenges them to create their own “musical time capsules” to connect their personal milestones with cultural events. The goal is to bridge personal and shared histories through the universal medium …

Introduction

This study investigated a remotely delivered, therapist-facilitated, personalized music listening intervention for community-dwelling older adults experiencing loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic. We assessed its feasibility and individuals' experiences of social connection and emotional well-being during the intervention.

Methods

Ten cognitively unimpaired older adults who endorsed loneliness completed eight weekly sessions with a board-certified music therapist via Zoom. Participants were guided in developing two online personalized music playlists and were asked to listen to playlists for at least one hour daily. Feasibility metrics were attendance, accessibility, and compliance rates. Post-study interview responses were analyzed using a rapid qualitative methodology. Exploratory …

Timing Matters: Applying Musicians’ Insights To Business, Ray Haeng Soo Seol Edd, Barry Van Zyl Mba Jan 2024

Timing Matters: Applying Musicians’ Insights To Business, Ray Haeng Soo Seol Edd, Barry Van Zyl Mba

Faculty Works

Timing, a critical aspect in social contexts and human cognition, has been extensively studied across diverse fields, such as biology, neuroscience, and business. However, there is a lack of interdisciplinary approaches that offer fresh perspectives on how timing works. Music performance, being inherently temporal in nature, presents a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and explore timing mechanisms in a multifaceted context. This research explores how professional musicians understand and utilize timing in their training and artistic development, and how these insights can be applied to business contexts, bridging the two fields to understand timing more comprehensively. Through a qualitative …

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett Jan 2024

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Inhabiting Numbers: Polyphony as Woven Sound explores connections between vocal polyphony and textile practices, specifically weaving and spinning. Rather than consider music and weaving as separate from one another, the following paper presents the ways in which they are deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive forms of cultural expression. The technical modes of thinking produced through repetition inherent in both—particularly as practices utilizing complex mathematical structures—produce ways of thinking unique to each. Through practice, I suggest these technical modes of making transit across different materials and mediums—in both explicit and implicit ways. The music created through the interweaving of multiple voices …

Woven Symphony: Exploring The Parallels Between Weaving And Music, Qianwen Yu Jan 2024

Woven Symphony: Exploring The Parallels Between Weaving And Music, Qianwen Yu

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Weaving and music are art forms often perceived as unrelated but actually share deep connections and fascinating similarities. In this presentation, I will first briefly introduce the impact of the 19th-century Jacquard loom on the invention of the Player Piano, a musical technology that evolved into the modern "MIDI" computer audio notation system. Second, I will explore the similarities found in both weaving and musical composition by presenting some of my own media installation art works. These works translate musical scores into woven textures, and vice versa, creating symphonies and revealing new sensory ways to appreciate textiles and music. I …
