Why do we seek out new performances of a commonly performed piece of music? An essential tradition of Western classical music (WCM) is the performance of canonical works by composers, an activity that requires the interpretation and execution of written scores by individual performers. In this practice, performers are not only expected to determine the composer’s “intentions,” but also somehow (paradoxically) share these in a “unique” performance interpretation. In musical education, performers are trained by teachers to create these “unique” interpretations by learning how to intuit composers’ intentions in a system that passes down interpretative traditions through master-apprentice one-on-one lessons. …

The purpose of my dissertation is to explore how contemporary Asian Americans artist-performers have formulated their identities through collaborations with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The project addresses issues in the existing literature on this topic and provides an alternative framework of cosmopolitanism to understanding the multidimensional aspects of artistic collaborations. The dissertation examines the history of the AACM and the Asian American improvisers and reveals ideological differences among its members on how music should reflect their identities. In its twenty-five years in New York City’s new music scene, Wet Ink Ensemble has established a distinctive approach in which members blend the roles of performer, composer, and improviser. This dissertation investigates how the ensemble’s beginnings at the nexus of the experimental rock and avant-garde music scenes prepared it for a turn towards collaborative composition and improvisation. After defining essential elements of the ensemble’s performance practice, I analyze Eric Wubbels’ Auditory Scene Analysis (I) and Sam Pluta’s Lines on Black—compositions that exemplify opposing poles of notational specificity. Good Vibrations: Folk Circles As Communication Environments, Missy Alexander

For over 25 years, I have participated in the creation of music and community through what are commonly called folk circles. Typically run as monthly gatherings, participants who range from complete beginners to seasoned pros, join together and share their favorite songs. These environments have clearly defined rules for participation (although rarely stated overtly), a strong ethos of mutual support, and frequently function as a path to friendships for people new to a community. This essay examines the folk circle as a communication environment and posits an explanation of why it is impervious to digital invasions.

Based on an investigation of newspaper articles, this article presents a first look at the activities of Antonio Jiménez Manjón, Miguel Llobet, and Agustín Barrios in Chile between 1893 and 1918. Manjón’s concerts were well received, clashing with some of the discourse in the local media, which considered the guitar vulgar and expressionless. Llobet introduced the Tárrega school in Chile in 1912, which is in itself a milestone in the study of Tárrega’s pedagogical philosophy in that country. Furthermore, his technique was praised and, like Manjón’s, led to the challenging of prejudices against the guitar. The case of Agustín Barrios, …

This dissertation study explores the experiences of Black professors who carry Hip-Hop epistemologies and utilize Hip-Hop as a method to navigate the social and structural systems within their predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Grounded in Critical Race Theory, the study utilizes narrative inquiry and counterstorytelling. The analysis involved the development of a composite counterstory featuring the fictional protagonist, Hampton Franklin. The findings highlight common experiences among participants. Findings suggest that Black faculty are insiders whose positions grant them access and influence. Second, they are outsiders that navigate hypervisibility, invisibility, and racial battle fatigue. The retention of middle and high school students in music education programs remains a persistent concern, particularly when disparities in motivation are shaped by socioeconomic status (SES). This hermeneutic phenomenological study investigated how intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors such as funding, parental involvement, off-campus performance opportunities, and student engagement are influenced by SES and how these influences affect student retention in school music programs. This qualitative transcendental phenomenological research followed the perspectives of thirteen music educators across eleven states. The participants included five female secondary band directors, six male secondary band directors, one retired female secondary band director, and one male secondary administrator, along with the personal experiences of six mothers who currently serve as band directors in secondary music education. This study explored perceptions of gender bias within the field, focusing on issues such as the underrepresentation of women in secondary music education, negative societal perceptions regarding women in leadership positions, and the presence of a negative workplace culture. Ruth Josephine Barton was born on December 23, 1921, in Farmington, Utah. Her parents were Lloyd and Edna (Cottrell) Barton. When the Bartons married, Edna already had a five-year-old daughter, Helen, from a previous marriage. Ruth was the first of two children born to Edna’s second marriage. The family was living in Mount Pleasant, Utah, but returned to the home of Edna’s father, Edward Cottrell, for the birth of the baby. She was named Ruth for the biblical heroine, and Josephine because she shared a birthday with the prophet Joseph Smith. A younger sister, Laura Jean, joined the family in …

Vanja Louise Yorgason was born on September 22, 1938 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of R. Milton and Norma Johns Yorgason. Vanja grew up in a musical home. Her father was a violinist, and her mother a pianist and an organist. Vanja and her four brothers learned to “sing four-part hymns in tune unaccompanied.”1 Their parents felt that music was an important part of their children’s education, and made the necessary sacrifices to provide music lessons.

Nephi Lorenzo Mitchell (May 4, 1889 – November 9, 1968) was a pianist, organist, music teacher and composer, whose life and work took place in three countries: England, Canada and the United States. Mitchell was named the Aaronic Priesthood Music Director for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1945, and was the director of the McCune School of Music and Art from 1950-1957. He served on the General Music Committee of the Church from 1938-1968.
