Perspectives On Gender Stereotypes And Glass Ceiling Beliefs Of Male And Female Corporate Professionals, Shellie Cecelia Jones
Perspectives On Gender Stereotypes And Glass Ceiling Beliefs Of Male And Female Corporate Professionals, Shellie Cecelia Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, as of 2021, women comprise almost half of the entire workforce (46.8%), yet only represent 24% of top earning officers and 6% of CEO positions. A phenomenon known as the glass ceiling is recognized as an unofficial barrier to advancement within a profession or a company that specifically affects minority populations, including women in business. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the glass ceiling barriers to career advancement for professional women and gender stereotypes. The framework used for this study was based on the role congruity theory that proposes prejudice towards …
Where Are All The African-American Women Superintendents In California, Oregon, And Washington State?, Toniesha D. Webb
Where Are All The African-American Women Superintendents In California, Oregon, And Washington State?, Toniesha D. Webb
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
There are many African American women in leadership positions such as Assistant Superintendents, Network Superintendents, Directors, Principals, Assistant Principals, and Coaches. There is a disconnect for African American women in leadership and the highest position of authority in a school district. This leads to the question, what are the barriers, if any, that are limiting the amount of African American Women in the far western states to transition into Superintendent positions? In the reverse, what supports did the women who are superintendents have in their leadership ascension? Finally, what structures need to be developed and formalized in order to facilitate …

Our commentary responds to claims made by DiMarco and colleagues in an article published in this journal that the majority of victims of rape are men and that 80% of those who rape men are women. Although we strongly believe that studying male sexual victimization is a highly important research and policy endeavour, we have concerns with the approach taken by DiMarco and colleagues to discuss these incidents. Specifically, we critique their paper by addressing the definitions of rape used by the authors, questioning their interpretation of national victim surveys, evaluating their analysis of the underreporting of male rape, and …
Femininity Reclaiming Chivalry In The Harry Potter Series, Ashley M. Watson
Femininity Reclaiming Chivalry In The Harry Potter Series, Ashley M. Watson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This paper focuses on the reclaiming of chivalric values by female characters in the Harry Potter series by comparing them to Arthurian characters. Scholars have extensively compared the narrative of the Knights of the Round Table to the global phenomenon of the Harry Potter series, but in this paper I explore, through a feminist lens, a character comparison of the Harry Potter novels and Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur. I will show how female characters in modern literature reclaim chivalry. This is important because it exemplifies a shift in the position of women into a more active role. I …
Rhetoric Of The Invisible (Or, How Bisexual People Demand To Be Seen), Olivia Wood
Rhetoric Of The Invisible (Or, How Bisexual People Demand To Be Seen), Olivia Wood
Publications and Research
While the term in its modern usage existed earlier, the word “bisexual” consolidated its meaning as a sexual identity during the 1970s. In the following decades, the term became the source of much consternation in the gay and lesbian communities, in part due to the pressures of political lesbianism and the stigmas of the AIDS epidemic. The first bisexual-specific organizations in the US and the UK formed in the early 1990s, yet bi people continue to struggle for visibility, representation, and acceptance, even within the LGBTQ+ community. For these reasons and others, bisexuality identity presents complicated rhetorical situations for people …

Nearly all past research about body dissatisfaction and romantic relationship factors is among heterosexual couples; little is known about these associations in sexual minority couples. The present study aimed to fill gaps in the current literature by using actor-partner interdependence models (APIMs) to examine dyadic patterns of association between body dissatisfaction and different aspects of relationship functioning among same-sex female couples. Participants were 163 same-sex female romantic dyads (326 women) between the ages of 18-35 years who completed measures of body dissatisfaction and relationship factors. Results from significance testing of actor and partner effects indicated higher levels of women's own …

Gender Differences And Motivation For The Teaching Profession: Why Do Men Choose (Not) To Teach?, Ivana Pikić Jugović, Ana Maskalan, Tea Pavin Ivanec
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The aim of this study was to explore gender differences in motivation for choosing teaching as a profession and perceptions of men’s demotivation for the choice of this profession. 279 preservice subject teachers from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, filled in the FIT-Choice Scale (Watt & Richardson, 2007) and the Demotivation of Men for Teaching Career Choice Scale. Results revealed that, regardless of their gender, preservice subject teachers were primarily motivated by the intrinsic and social utility values of teaching, while specific gender differences imply the importance of the role of social factors in men’s choice of this career. Low …

Theses and Dissertations
As I welcome Richmond, VA into my family, I find myself needing to make roots and webs and nets and branches that ground me, that place myself as a Black, queer, mixed race, artist, activist, educator, storyteller, and cultural worker in this city. I am called to the streets before I am called to my studio. I question what it means to be a part of an institution that is slowly eating this city up. I become a story collector. I need to know where I am and whose land I now call home.

Theses and Dissertations
Childhood Reliquary De Una CatrachaMexi Entre Nopales is a multisensory based installation consisting of three large and six medium scale mixed media paintings with performance. It is informed by my upbringing in Boyle Heights in the projects during the 90s, followed by East LA in the mid 2000s. It is the reliquary for my discomfort in institutional spaces and why I have found comfort in dystopian-like installations. This is the landscape in which I exist, regardless of where I am now. It is where I place my work. It is the context in which I celebrate the powerful delicacy of …

Spectrum Of Shit, Hannah Hiaasen
Theses and Dissertations
Contending with the loss of a parent to a mass shooting in their workplace, a newsroom, I find myself suspended in time, in an office. Post-its, fans, button-ups, snow globes, clipboards, reporters notebooks, scrap paper, jot downs, keyboards hold me up. I crave the comfort of repetitive cumulative hand work. Quilting, weaving, and cutting away help me breathe, haptically process and memorialize these grieving objects, this grieving person. Weed-wacking towards intimacy, my work employs a range of materials to mourn the mundanity of a workday, fantasize transformative justice, and steward embodied grief to the surface. My only speed is slow-- …
Defiantly Childlike: Using Aesthetic Resistance To Heal, Sarah K. Reagan
Defiantly Childlike: Using Aesthetic Resistance To Heal, Sarah K. Reagan
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines an alternative processing mechanism surrounding the act of healing after traumatic experiences in life. Using a methodology of iterative patterning and tool-pathing, a collection of inflatable garments and wooden mannequins analyzes defense mechanisms learned in early childhood development. This work highlights an essential body of recent scholarship that takes cuteification seriously to restore a childlike approach to mastering fear. This paper will review the definitions of cuteness and childlike humor and then describe how visual culture has implemented these components to subvert established power.
Considering Queerness - Actor Training's Issues And Alternatives, Jacob Leblanc
Considering Queerness - Actor Training's Issues And Alternatives, Jacob Leblanc
Theses and Dissertations
Educators in academic theatre programs, whether queer or non-queer, trans or cisgender, may not intentionally consider queerness in their pedagogical practices. What follows is an examination of current issues in academia that can affect queer students negatively and disproportionately. Anecdotal evidence is provided to demonstrate different issues that may be present in the classroom experiences of queer students. The Stanislavski system is critiqued through a contemporary, queer lens to locate possible shortcomings in the acting technique when it is applied by queer performers. Queer alternatives to the Stanislavski system are vetted and offered to queer students who might seek something …

Competing Worlds: The Private Lives Of Women Nurse Students And Gender Equity In Higher Education, Lesley Andrew, Ken Robinson, Leesa Costello, Julie Dare
Competing Worlds: The Private Lives Of Women Nurse Students And Gender Equity In Higher Education, Lesley Andrew, Ken Robinson, Leesa Costello, Julie Dare
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020 Society for Research into Higher Education. A longitudinal qualitative study of undergraduate women nursing students demonstrated the profound and pervasive influence of the heterosexual intimate relationship on their university engagement and achievement. Hitherto, the importance of women’s private lives have been underappreciated in the arenas of student equity and retention. The study showed that traditional ideas of gender held within the intimate relationship were highly detrimental to student autonomy and capacity to engage, and that the university’s organisation and delivery of the curriculum exacerbated the situation. Participants made personal sacrifices, which, while enabling continuation of their studies, were …
Exploring Multicultural Competence Skills Of Lgbtq+ Counseling Trainees, Jacob Perez
Exploring Multicultural Competence Skills Of Lgbtq+ Counseling Trainees, Jacob Perez
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While counselors develop multicultural competence through counselor education, training, and supervision, the practice and demonstration of multicultural competence remains nebulous and lacks thorough prescription of specific counseling skills. The present study was conducted to explore and concretize the skills used by LGBTQ+ counseling trainees to demonstrate multicultural competence for understanding the client worldview and the counseling relationship. Data was gathered with twelve LGBTQ+ counseling trainees from CACREP-accredited master’s-level clinical mental health counseling programs through semi-structured interviews using a relational-cultural theoretical framework. Seven domains encompassed the 37 skill categories that emerged from phenomenological data analysis. The domains included (a) counselor authenticity …
Asexuality And Demisexuality: Clinical Implications Of Sexual Identity, Michael Scott Fiorini
Asexuality And Demisexuality: Clinical Implications Of Sexual Identity, Michael Scott Fiorini
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
This paper considers demisexuality as an identity and sexual orientation for use by psychologists using historical, sociological, and psychological perspectives. It discusses the clinical implications of demisexuality as an identity and orientation distinct from asexuality. The paper discusses applications and limitations of defining and identifying demisexuality in a clinical population and it's social, scientific, and contextual significance. The paper compares what can be observed with existing diagnostic guidelines present in the DSM-5 for the identification of Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD) and Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (MHSDD). The paper proposes guidelines for the diagnosis and the ethical clinical treatment …
Exploring The Career Advancement Experience Of Black Women On Their Journey To Executive Levels In Large American Corporations, Pamela J. Viscione
Exploring The Career Advancement Experience Of Black Women On Their Journey To Executive Levels In Large American Corporations, Pamela J. Viscione
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Corporations began hiring Black people into management positions in the 1960s and 1970s following the passage of the Civil Rights Act (1964) which made it unlawful to discriminate in hiring based on race, gender, religion, or country of origin. Black men were the first to benefit from this change in the law and Black women began to appear in entry level management roles in the 1980s. Forty years later, there have only been four Black women CEOs in the history of the Fortune 1000, the largest American companies based on reported revenues. This level of representation is closer to zero …
Love And Learn: Creating Space For Authentic Caring In Family Child Care, Katherine Kelly Hart Meehan
Love And Learn: Creating Space For Authentic Caring In Family Child Care, Katherine Kelly Hart Meehan
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Children benefit from engagement in early education and care (ECE) programs that support their learning and development while also providing a point of connection to critical resources for their families. For children from economically disadvantaged families, the lack of access to high-quality ECE results in a persistent achievement and opportunity gap (García & Weiss, 2015). A significant portion of ECE occurs in home-based early learning environments, also known as family child care (FCC) programs, which play a critical role in supporting children from low-income and immigrant families (Layzer et al., 2007; Porter et al., 2010). Unfortunately, this sector of ECE …

Conservatorship Of Valerie N., 707 P.2d 760 (Cal. 1985), Doriane Lambelet Coleman
Faculty Scholarship
Conservatorship of Valerie N. is the next case in this volume. The original 1985 opinion from the California Supreme Court concerned an “adult developmentally disabled daughter,” whose parents wished to have her surgically sterilized because she was (according to the parents) sexually aggressive towards men. Although the original opinion held that the California law did not authorize the sterilization of Valerie the case is nonetheless ripe for a feminist rewrite. Professor Doriane Lambelet Coleman’s feminist judgment demonstrates how feminism requires attention not only to women’s issues in general but also to the woman herself, and not only to childbearing (or …
Intercultural Communication, Anthony Naaeke
Intercultural Communication, Anthony Naaeke
Open Educational Resources
I believe that learning is a life-long process, cumulative, reflective/critical, experiential, accessible to some people and not to others, and directed toward some action that benefits self, community, and the world. From this perspective, we will adopt the open pedagogy method of learning because it is most suitable and beneficial for the following reasons:
-
In open pedagogy the learning doesn’t end after the semester but what we learn in class should motivate all of us to continue to reflect on our lives and the circumstances of our times and neighborhoods and seek ways to address them.
-
Learning builds on learning. …
Rainbow-Washing Away Customers: Does The Consumer’S Perception Of Rainbow-Washing Affect Purchasing Behavior?, Ashley N. Johns, Sindy Chapa, Nakima Brooks, Holly Coleman, Maya Dubois
Rainbow-Washing Away Customers: Does The Consumer’S Perception Of Rainbow-Washing Affect Purchasing Behavior?, Ashley N. Johns, Sindy Chapa, Nakima Brooks, Holly Coleman, Maya Dubois
AMTP Proceedings 2022
In this study, researchers will test to see the effects rainbow-washing has on consumers’ intent to purchase. Rainbow-washing is a new marketing technique in which companies implement different initiatives to appeal to the LGBTQ+ community while not genuinely investing in the community itself. To test if rainbow-washing is correlated to a consumer’s desire to purchase, a survey was distributed using nonprobability sampling to 38 participants. Of the sample, less than half identified as members of the target community (LGBTQ+). As a result, it was concluded there is no significance between consumer attitudes towards rainbow-washing and their intention to purchase. However, …
Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer
Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer
Open Educational Resources
This essay discusses the contrasting attitudes toward ecstatic experience as described in Martin Buber's book Ekstatische Konfessionen (1909). Ingmar Bergman's film Persona (1966), and Jean-Luc Godard's film Weekend (1967). The attitude toward ecstasy depends heavily on the use of language and confidence in language to represent ecstatic experience. Buber, Bergman. and Godard share little, if any, perception on the relation between language, speech, and ecstasy.
A Question Of Affect: A Queer Reading Of Institutional Nondiscrimination Statements At Texas Public Universities, Sarah Dwyer
A Question Of Affect: A Queer Reading Of Institutional Nondiscrimination Statements At Texas Public Universities, Sarah Dwyer
English Faculty Publications (Archived)
Grounded in my embodied experiences as an openly-queer faculty member at a Texas public university and drawing from Sara Ahmed’s work on affect and institutional diversity, I argue that nondiscrimination statements at Texas public universities are affective objects which serve as straightening devices on the queer bodies that they affect, even as they purport to and often do protect them. The goals of my critique are twofold: 1) to support the work of those tasked with writing revisions to these policies by offering a few practical suggestions to allow for greater enforcement of the nondiscrimination practices that these policies espouse; …
Pink Bamboo Ceiling: Barriers And Breakthroughs For Asian American Women Leaders, Mele W. Kramer
Pink Bamboo Ceiling: Barriers And Breakthroughs For Asian American Women Leaders, Mele W. Kramer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAsian Americans are the most diverse and fastest-growing minority group in the U.S. and have the highest average level of education of all minority and dominant groups in America making up 6.2 % of the labor market. However, Asian Americans overall hold one percent of the executive leadership roles in Fortune 500 organizations. Low leadership representation leaves this demographic without a decision-making voice and without power in society. The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn about the lived experiences of Asian American women (AAW) leaders and potential leaders as it pertains to race, gender, and stereotypes in the …
Women’S Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment In Liberia’S Public Sector, Gbelly Arrington Johnson
Women’S Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment In Liberia’S Public Sector, Gbelly Arrington Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite progress towards gender equality, women continue to be affected by quid pro quo sexual harassment in Liberia workplaces. They are often viewed as sexual objects rather than contributing players toward sustainable development. Using Feinberg’s harm principle as the interpretive lens and the hermeneutic phenomenology as a method of analysis, women’s lived experiences of quid pro quo sexual harassment in Liberia’s public sector were explored. Purposeful sampling employing in-depth semistructured interviews of 13 working women using Zoom was used for thematic content analyses. Analysis of the data produced three major themes: (a) sex for employment or sexployment, (b) hesitancy in …
La “Border Culture” Del Personaje Mexicoamericano En El Sureste De Estados Unidos En Los Cuentos De Lorraine López Y Mijito Doesn’T Live Here Anymore De Jaime Martínez, Jaime Chavez
The Coastal Review
This paper explores the concepts of "Border Culture" and "Borderlands" by Gloria Anzaldúa in Soy la Avon Lady and Other Stories, Homicide Survivors Picnic and Other Stories, by Lorraine López and the novel Mijito Doesn’t Live Here Anymore by Jaime Martínez. The paper argues that the Mexican American character in the southeast of the United States lives in the "Borderlands" and practices a "Border Culture" because they don't follow the traditional stereotypical role of the Mexican American character within the literary canon of both the dominant culture and Chicana/o literature.
Life Stories Of Older Chinese Immigrant Women In The U.S., Lijun Li
Life Stories Of Older Chinese Immigrant Women In The U.S., Lijun Li
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study is an effort to turn to older Chinese immigrant women aged 60 and above, one of the most marginalized groups in American society, to recognize their humanity and rediscover the unseen and unheard. It asks what we can learn from their life stories, particularly from the ways in which each experience(d) being a woman in different societal systems. Using in-depth life story interviews supplemented with secondary sources of information, this study crafts four women’s stories that are first read and interpreted individually to capture the whole person in context, and then are looked at thematically. Nine themes are …
