Poems, Ranjini Thaver
Poems, Ranjini Thaver
Journal of International Women's Studies
Five poems by Ranjini Thaver:
- Fish for Thought
- The Prodigal Poor
- Ode to My Sister
- Paper Dolls at Graduation
- Genesis
The two poems on poverty are intimately related to my emotional [first hand] and intellectual [second-hand] experiences with poverty. As a poor child growing up in apartheid South Africa, I agonized over the inability of affluent men and women of all races to understand the beauty and dignity of the poor despite our outer appearance. Now that I am educated and affluent I understand emotionally why this was so. At the intellectual level most well-meaning scholars and activists respond to …

Mariological Memory In The Winter's Tale And Henry Viii, Ruth Vanita
Mariological Memory In The Winter's Tale And Henry Viii, Ruth Vanita
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
The Winter’s Tale and Henry VIII are built on a paradox—their women protagonists acquire increased moral authority even while they are being demoted and persecuted. The structure of these plays supports this empowering through a series of spectacles of female fictive kinship. While male kinship, especially patrilineage, is central to the construction of Shakespeare’s histories and tragedies, female fictive lineage is crucial to the vision of these two plays. Henry VIII and The Winter’s Tale visually and verbally construct succession through a series of mutually sympathetic female figures who are not necessarily biologically related: Hermione/ Paulina/Perdita; Katherine/Anne/Elizabeth. Shakespeare draws on …

My Mother's Legacy: Trying To Make A Difference Through Teaching And Research, Marilyn Edelstein
My Mother's Legacy: Trying To Make A Difference Through Teaching And Research, Marilyn Edelstein
English
Asked to write about how I became interested in social justice research, I realized that the question had two parts for me: how I got interested in social justice and how I got interested in research. To answer these questions, I found myself thinking back to my early adolescence, and to my mother. I remember a day when I was about 12 and saw a TV news report on poverty and hunger in some 49 underdeveloped" part of the world. When it was over, I flung myself across my mother's bed, crying. My mother came into the room and asked …
Kicking At The Closet Door: The Opinions, Attitudes, And Experiences Of Military Homosexuals, Rodney Lee Parks
Kicking At The Closet Door: The Opinions, Attitudes, And Experiences Of Military Homosexuals, Rodney Lee Parks
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions, attitudes, and experiences of active-duty homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers. Very little research currently exists on this topic because the sample population remains hidden among the ranks of their heterosexual counterparts for fear of discrimination, harassment, and physical violence. Using a snowball sampling technique, survey analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers and assess their experiences. Most homosexual men and women serve effectively in the military and are proud of their military performance. Although many homosexuals join the military to suppress their desires, the majority (70%) felt that …

Black Women In Durham Politics, 1950-1996: From Grassroots To Electoral Politics, Grace Walton
Black Women In Durham Politics, 1950-1996: From Grassroots To Electoral Politics, Grace Walton
New England Journal of Public Policy
Based on the author's senior thesis in African-American history; this article about black women by a black woman was conceived to educate Americans about a different kind of history. It illustrates the silent political struggles of black women in Durham, North Carolina, and their gradual acceptance into American politics from 1950 to 1996. The oral history design demonstrates that black women's political activity underwent a transformation from grassroots politics to full electoral participation, which brought them to the forefront of Durham politics. Through both types of political activity, the unique political consciousness of black women continues to have a great …
