Simone Schwarz-Bart : Quel Intérêt? Classer L’Inclassable, Christiane Ndiaye
Simone Schwarz-Bart : Quel Intérêt? Classer L’Inclassable, Christiane Ndiaye
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Critics do not agree on what constitutes the interest of the works of Schwarz- Bart. However, four major tendencies are apparent in the many critical studies of her works: some are interested in the "creole experience" her novels are said to portray, others in the "feminine experience", while others again in the "mythological" dimension and the question of what is borrowed from oral literature. These different approches interpret the works of Schwarz-Bart essentially in the perspective of "testimony" and, even though there is a consensus as to the originality of her writing, there is little analysis of the specific techniques …

Réceptions De L’Oeuvre D’Émile Ollivier : De La Difficulté De Nommer L’Écrivain Migrant, Joubert Satyre
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Abstract: Who is a migrant writer? That’s the question asked by Québec institutions which legitimatize literature, including journalistic critics and scholars. The aim of our paper is to make an inventory of the terms employed by these institutions to name Émile Ollivier (1940-2002), an Haitian novelist who has been exiled in Québec since the mid-sixties. These terms reveal a discontent and vagueness in the attempt to link the novelist to a nationality or a country. Between appropriation and dismissal, this multiplicity symbolizes a resistance to frankly consider this writer as a Quebecer. We also refer to the "in-between" of all …
Three approaches seem to characterize the reception of Vietnamese Literature in French: socio-historical, "essentialist" and feminist discourses. This article proposes to analyse the lack of theoretical thought and pertinence in some of the works published on the subject, which appear to introduce and promote this literature rather than study it. Without denying contributions that are indeed interesting, this paper, however, emphasizes works that raise questions and oblige us to ask: is there a critical reception of Vietnamese Francophone Literature?
Linda Lê : Schizo-Positive?, Isabelle Favre
Linda Lê : Schizo-Positive?, Isabelle Favre
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In her novel entitled "Calomnies", Linda Lê depicts a "mad uncle" and a young female writer fascinated with her uncle’s marginality. In this book, Lê presents a complex view of schizophrenia. Sometimes, the actions and thoughts of the uncle are reminiscent of Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts such as le corps sans organe and la machine célibataire. Some other times however, Lê pays attention to the past of the uncle and shows how, in Vietnam, he witnessed the hypocrisy of his family during the war. These passages are then closer to Laing’s theories, since the environment and conditions in which he …

John Fox Jr.'S Commentary On The Roles Of Women In The Progressive Era., Heather Mac Sykes
John Fox Jr.'S Commentary On The Roles Of Women In The Progressive Era., Heather Mac Sykes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Fox, Jr. provides commentary on the changing roles of Progressive Era women in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, “A Cumberland Vendetta,” and “The Pardon of Becky Day.” Fox’s portrayals provide evidence that although he recognized the changes in his society with women spearheading reform, he did not entirely approve of these changes or of women taking an aggressive role in advocating change.
This thesis provides textual examples and analysis demonstrating Fox’s beliefs. Chapter two focuses on the stories of “The Pardon of Becky Day” and “A Cumberland Vendetta.” Chapter three analyzes The …

Housing Delivery In Nthutukoville, South Africa: Successes And Problems For Women, Catherine Ndinda
Housing Delivery In Nthutukoville, South Africa: Successes And Problems For Women, Catherine Ndinda
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper examines the notion of empowerment and what it entails in housing development. Through a critical analysis if the different phases in one particular housing project analyzed by the author, the paper highlights the areas of empowerment and emphasizes that it is a process, which in the case of Nthutukoville in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa began with securing land tenure. Access to resources and acquisition of skills are important. Both external and internal factors may be responsible for women’s inability to take charge of their lives. External factors include political violence, unsupportive local authorities, and a hostile environment as well …
Technology, Commentary And The Admonitions For Women, Sherin Wing
Technology, Commentary And The Admonitions For Women, Sherin Wing
Journal of International Women's Studies
The following is an analysis of the Admonitions for Women (Nu Jie) by the Later Han Dynasty scholar, Ban Zhao. It examines the historical context for its composition, applying not only one literary template, that of the instructional text, the technological treatise, but also Confucian Commentary. Through this process, the Admonitions emerges as a sophisticated philosophical tract that combines not only several literary traditions, but applies them to a new, unique audience: elite women. In so doing, Ban Zhao challenges assumptions of women’s roles, expectations of women, and enlightens her readers as to what might be really happening …
Keys To Women’S Liberation In Communist China: An Historical Overview, Jinghao Zhou
Keys To Women’S Liberation In Communist China: An Historical Overview, Jinghao Zhou
Journal of International Women's Studies
Has the Communist Party of China (CPC) fully liberated Chinese women? Is the leadership of the CPC the key to Chinese women’s liberation in the twenty-first century? The CPC has tried to convince the Chinese people and international society to believe that the answer is positive. Having examined the status of Chinese women from an historical perspective, the author has reached the conclusion that women’s problems in present-day China are not only serious but also structural. It is impossible for Chinese women to fully enjoy women’s rights within the current communist system. The future of women’s liberation largely depends on …

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott
Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott
Faculty Journal Articles
n this paper, I argue that one of the most intense ways women are encouraged to enjoy sublime experiences is via attempts to control their bodies through excessive dieting. If this is so, then the societal-cultural contributions to the problem of eating disorders exceed the perpetuation of a certain beauty ideal to include the almost universal encouragement women receive to diet, coupled with the relative shortage of opportunities women are afforded to experience the sublime.

Distributed Authorship: A Feminist Case-Study Framework For Studying Intellectual Property, Sarah Robbins
Faculty Articles
To probe one case of free-ranging textual circulation, and to address issues associated with producers' rights to textual ownership and authorial credit, Robbins examines the Americanized versions of British writer Anna Barbauld's Lessons for children. Robin states that examining multiple specific cases of distributed authorship, and linking them to contemporary textual ownership issues, may well lead to nuanced extensions of the basic framework for understanding intellectual property that pioneers in the field have already formulated.
Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger
Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger
Journal of International Women's Studies
Cyber-space presents many contradictions to those seeking to use it for activist ends in a transnational world. This paper explores some of these contradictions by examining various uses of the internet in efforts to raise awareness about the situation for women in Afghanistan during the period the Taliban came to power and controlled a majority of the country. I explore differences in approaches, images, and tone within examples of internet activism, emphasizing the Web work of the Feminist Majority Foundation, set in comparison with that of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. Due to the prominence of the …

Psychological Factors Influencing Perceived Entrepreneurial Success Among Nigerian Women In Small-Scale Businesses, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Ugonma Eme Umoren
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper considered self-concept, perceived managerial competence, work stress and business commitment as important psychological variables for perceived entrepreneurial success among female entrepreneurs. A study was conducted to examine these factors, using 213 female entrepreneurs. The results showed that although all the predictor variables jointly accounted for perceived entrepreneurial success only business commitment contributed significantly. But in the independent prediction of the variables, only self-concept and business commitment were significant. Additionally, number of children significantly influenced perceived success with females having 5 children and more, and those having 1-2 children reporting better success than those without children or having 3-4 …
Women Learners In The Classroom: Exploring The Experience Of Voice, Listening, And Silence, Anita Sinner
Women Learners In The Classroom: Exploring The Experience Of Voice, Listening, And Silence, Anita Sinner
Journal of International Women's Studies
The question of voice is central to a feminist perspective. The dichotomies of voice and silence have long held positions of power and marginalization in the context of the classroom community. In a recent investigation into the learning experiences of three women, Giustina, Tina and Christina, the theme of voice, listening, and silence surfaced as participants reflected on their participation in college and university courses in Canada. These case studies offer a forum to discuss the classroom experiences of women and perhaps shift perspectives on the meaning of voice, listening, and silence in learning.
In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain
In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain
Journal of International Women's Studies
The problem of inequality for women in Bangladesh is more social than legal. As regards to the law, except for personal matters, inequalities in the provisions of law are hardly found. Personal matters, however, are regulated by religious laws or customs. In the legal system of Bangladesh though these laws or customs are incorporated separately under the head of Personal Law, these are not, however, as a whole derived from religious laws or customs. Some changes through introducing enactments or promulgating ordinances were made in their application. Still, these have been insufficient to establish equality between women and men. This …
Reflections On New Partnerships Between Women And Local Self-Government In India: A Rural Revolution?, Santosh Nandal
Reflections On New Partnerships Between Women And Local Self-Government In India: A Rural Revolution?, Santosh Nandal
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay reflects on strategies for women’s empowerment in light of the enactment of the 73rd constitutional amendment, Panchayati Raj, in the Indian Constitution, in 1992. It begins with the assumption that women’s empowerment implies progressive elimination of gender disparities at the grassroots level. As such, a perspective on women’s empowerment differs from ideas about women’s development in some important ways. Women’s development is primarily a socio-economic concept while women’s empowerment is essentially a political project. It is argued here that women’s empowerment is indeed a precursor to women’s development. The author offers suggestions for increasing women’s effectiveness in …

Race, Culture, And Strategies For Success Of Female Public School Administrators, Marie Byrd-Blake
Race, Culture, And Strategies For Success Of Female Public School Administrators, Marie Byrd-Blake
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose for conducting this study was to examine the differences among African American, Hispanic, and white female public school administrators with respect to their perceptions of successful strategies that led to career advancement. Female public school administrators continue to experience barriers to career advancement. The data revealed that Hispanic females perceived themselves as more successful in utilizing more strategies than African American and white females. Few females reported utilizing the informal mentoring technique of forming "new girl networks."
