My Favorite Thing Is Monster Theory: Horror Comics And Demonstrating Difference In Emil Ferris’S "My Favorite Thing Is Monsters", Jennifer Rossberg
My Favorite Thing Is Monster Theory: Horror Comics And Demonstrating Difference In Emil Ferris’S "My Favorite Thing Is Monsters", Jennifer Rossberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My Favorite Thing is Monsters (2017) by Emil Ferris opens with the same etymological analysis of the word monster as Rosemarie Garland Thomson’s landmark disability studies article, “From Wonder to Error: A Discourse on Freak Genealogy” (1991). The protagonist of Ferris’s swirling, sketchbook-style thriller, Karen Reyes, is a mixed-race queer adolescent growing up in noirish 1960’s Chicago who longs to be a werewolf so she can bite and save her cancer-afflicted mother. After fleeing an imaginary, pitchfork-wielding M.O.B.—an acronym for “mean, ordinary, & boring” people—Karen explains that, “The dictionary says the word monster comes from the Latin word ‘monstrum’ which …
Historical Sisters: Black Feminist Actions Across History And Literary Studies, Jazz A. Milligan
Historical Sisters: Black Feminist Actions Across History And Literary Studies, Jazz A. Milligan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis seeks to understand how the actions of Black women from the past have inspired the modern Black female literary movement. This thesis focuses on three historical women: Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth Freeman, and Cathay Williams, and their literary sisters: bell hooks, Barbara Smith, and Patricia Hill Collins. By viewing the lives of these historical women through a modern-day lens, we can understand how their actions created a ripple effect that Black women are still discussing today. Black feminism did not start in a vacuum, and the actions of everyday Black women have pushed us forward to being more accepting …
Writing As Memory Work Teaching The Civic Deliberations Over Monument Removals, Jill Swiencicki, Barbara Lowe
Writing As Memory Work Teaching The Civic Deliberations Over Monument Removals, Jill Swiencicki, Barbara Lowe
English Faculty/Staff Publications
Social justice goals are usually sought in civic or community settings in which stakeholders represent competing frameworks about what is just, good, and true. Modeling for students a way to identify these competing frameworks, and then intervene in deliberations to achieve just ends, is the focus of our assignment sequence. We examine civic deliberations over removing racist public symbols in this assignment for first-year students enrolled in linked rhetoric and philosophy courses. We read broadly in theories of public memory and civic identity, examine in depth one community’s deliberation, and reflect on public symbols in our home communities. The final …
Subtle Speech And Use Of Pronouns In Tolkien's Novels And Old English Poetry, Chiara Marchetti
Subtle Speech And Use Of Pronouns In Tolkien's Novels And Old English Poetry, Chiara Marchetti
Journal of Tolkien Research
In human conversations, verbal exchanges follow rules. Applicable both to Old English poetry and Tolkien's fiction, rules governing speech set the right quantity and quality of information to be transmitted and provide strategies to avoid conflicts. What is too redundant or scanty in a speech might indicate more layers of meaning, which are implied or suggested.
Language can create or resolve conflicts; the careful use of words and even pronouns can make a difference between self-assertion and cooperation, unity and separation. Such refined linguistic technique is visible in Old English poetry, where dialectal ability is as important as valour, where …

Hyperrationality And Rhetorical Constellations In Digital Climate Change Denial: A Multi-Methodological Analysis Of The Discourse Of Watts Up With That, Denise Tillery, Emma Frances Bloomfield
Hyperrationality And Rhetorical Constellations In Digital Climate Change Denial: A Multi-Methodological Analysis Of The Discourse Of Watts Up With That, Denise Tillery, Emma Frances Bloomfield
English Faculty Research
Using a multi-methodological approach, we analyze member comments in Watts Up With That (WUWT), a climate skeptical Facebook group. Quantitative topic modeling revealed that members claim hyperrationality to undermine climate science. Science-based terms were often connected to other topics, such as immigration and LGBTQ+ rights, creating rhetorical constellations that shifted rhetoric from technical spaces into political and ideological ones. These findings have implications for dealing with the challenge of misinformation’s circulation on social media.
The Gaelic Background Of Old English Poetry Before Bede, Colin A. Ireland
The Gaelic Background Of Old English Poetry Before Bede, Colin A. Ireland
Richard Rawlinson Center Series
Seventh-century Gaelic law-tracts delineate professional poets (filid) who earned high social status through formal training. These poets cooperated with the Church to create an innovative bilingual intellectual culture in Old Gaelic and Latin. Bede described Anglo-Saxon students who availed themselves of free education in Ireland at this culturally dynamic time. Gaelic scholars called sapientes (“wise ones”) produced texts in Old Gaelic and Latin that demonstrate how Anglo-Saxon students were influenced by contact with Gaelic ecclesiastical and secular scholarship. Seventh-century Northumbria was ruled for over 50 years by Gaelic-speaking kings who could access Gaelic traditions. Gaelic literary traditions provide …
Humanism, Capitalism, And Rhetoric In Early Modern England: The Separation Of The Citizen From The Self, Lynette Hunter
Humanism, Capitalism, And Rhetoric In Early Modern England: The Separation Of The Citizen From The Self, Lynette Hunter
Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to concepts of the self associated with the development of humanism in England, and to strategies for both inclusion and exclusion in structuring the early modern nation state. It addresses writings about rhetoric and behavior from 1495-1660, beginning with Erasmus’ work on sermo or the conversational rhetoric between friends, which considers the reader as an ‘absent audience’, and following the transference of this stance to a politics whose broadening democratic constituency needed a legitimate structure for governance-at-a-distance.
Unusually, the book brings together the impact on behavior of these new concepts about rhetoric, with the …

Women Of Power: Mapping The Spiritual Journeys Of Caribbean Women Across Regional Fiction As Portrayed In The Book Of Night Women, Texaco, And Erzulie's Skirt, Natalie Sandy D'Auvergne-Lamotte
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary Caribbean fiction serves as an active agent for refining and expanding definitions of Caribbeanness. This study aims at demonstrating how Caribbean writers use representations of Caribbean women to contribute to an opaquer regional vision that argues against homogenizing ideas of Caribbeanness. The Book of Night Women, Texaco, and Erzulie’s Skirt, respectively written by Marlon James (Jamaica), Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique), and Anna-Maurine Lara (Dominican Republic), work by making space for more historically accurate and locally representative images of Caribbeanness through the Caribbean women they portray. Though characters live on different islands (at different times), they still manage to represent …

"Nothing ‘Personal’ To Lose": Alice Notley’S “I” And The Poetics Of Encounter In Disobedience, Christina T. Baulch
"Nothing ‘Personal’ To Lose": Alice Notley’S “I” And The Poetics Of Encounter In Disobedience, Christina T. Baulch
Theses and Dissertations
Though the lyric-I has often been perceived as an isolated ego, Alice Notley's "I" in her long poem Disobedience (2001) necessitates plurality through what I call a "poetics of encounter." In response to the 1978 Language poetry manifesto "Aesthetic Tendency and the Politics of Poetry," and to the larger well-rehearsed debate about vocal homogeneity and persona centrism in poetry, this paper argues that Notley's poetics of encounter brings the "I" of Disobedience into continual and complex conversation with material history, politics, and mass culture, thus situating it within, and not sequestered from, the world and its mediation.
Gloria Naylor’S Conversation With The Tempest, Kelly Mcavoy-Giarrusso
Gloria Naylor’S Conversation With The Tempest, Kelly Mcavoy-Giarrusso
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on how Gloria Naylor used Caliban from Shakespeare's The Tempest as inspiration for her character George, and how her evolution of the character reveals issues within the literary and academic community at the time of her writing. George fulfills Caliban’s limitations in that he has more power and autonomy than Caliban, but the tragedy of his death reveals that he has lost part of himself in order to gain that power. This idea that education and society can cause a loss of self is personal for Naylor, who encountered only white male authors in school and struggled …
Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim
Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
In Morocco, debates over English language instruction have marginalized poetry as a distinct literary genre. The shortage of poetry events arguably makes poetry teaching both daunting and intimidating. Besides fostering trust, memorization, and empathy, helping students develop a penchant for English language, as well as humanity, poetry, and narrative poetry, in particular, proffers teachers ample opportunities to fully engage students in the learning process. Not only does it awaken their senses and make them establish connections but leads them to think in a critical way about the world around them. In this paper, the teaching of narrative poetry through the …
Reminiscences Of Lafcadio Hearn, Setsuko Koizumi, Paul Kiyoshi Hisada, Frederick Johnson
Reminiscences Of Lafcadio Hearn, Setsuko Koizumi, Paul Kiyoshi Hisada, Frederick Johnson
Zea E-Books Collection
Setsuko Koizumi (1868–1932) was the daughter of a Japanese samurai family in Matsué. In 1891 she married a foreigner — Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904) — and their union lasted 13 years and produced three children. Hearn adopted her family name, becoming Koizumi Yakumo 小泉八雲,and spent those years in Japan writing, teaching, and achieving international recognition. Setsuko’s Reminiscences tells something of the couple’s moves and travels, but focuses mostly on the character, habits, and eccentricities of her husband. The book is a heartfelt and intimate portrait of a marriage that brought Lafcadio the home and family he had never before enjoyed. This …

Contexts And Implications Of Charles Dickens's Depictions Of Suicide In Bleak House, Olivia Sutton
Contexts And Implications Of Charles Dickens's Depictions Of Suicide In Bleak House, Olivia Sutton
Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards
“I passed on to the gate, and stooped down. I lifted the heavy head, put the long dank hair aside, and turned the face. And it was my mother, cold and dead”
(Esther’s Narrative, Charles Dickens’s Bleak House, pg. 701).
The death of Esther Sommerson’s mother, Lady Dedlock, is one of the more simplistic and cold renderings of suicide in Charles Dickens’s oeuvre. The results of Esther and Mr. Bucket’s tireless search are given in three short sentences with a count of five adjectives. And yet, Charles Dickens was writing in the tradition of literary sentimentalism, a genre that …

More Than Midnight Feasts?: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Enid Blyton’S Malory Towers, St. Clare’S And The Naughtiest Girl In The School Series, Rebecca Broomfield
Dissertations
Food is fundamental to life. It is also fundamental to culture; through our production, manipulation and consumption of foodstuffs, the way in which we eat has amassed a range of rituals and rules. This suggests that food can be used to indicate more than mere biological need. Food and foodways are a common occurrence throughout literature, not least children’s literature. This thesis applies gastrocriticism as a paradigm to investigate the use of food and foodways in Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers, St. Clare’s and The Naughtiest Girl school series. Gastrocriticism is an emerging form of literary criticism that considers the complex …

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter
The last two and half years have seen big changes in how we connect and interact with each other, and this is especially the case for a Society like ours, where many are also geographically separated. While covid is still with us, hopefully things are slowly returning to the “new normal,” however, some of the changes that have occurred will have lasting significance, particularly the accelerated use of technology and move online. There is definitely still a place for face to face meetings, but Societies like ours also need to adapt, and a recurring theme in this newsletter is change. …

Love Conquers Death: Mythological Subversion And Emotional Triumph In “The Tale Of Beren And Luthien”, Sam Baughn
Love Conquers Death: Mythological Subversion And Emotional Triumph In “The Tale Of Beren And Luthien”, Sam Baughn
4610 English: Individual Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
Though The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings sit at the forefront of J.R.R. Tokien’s expansive legendarium, there is one work that sits at the center of his expansive world. Published as chapter 19 of The Silmarillion, Of Beren and Luthien, also referred to as The Tale of Beren and Luthien is the beating heart of Tolkien’s mythology. It is perhaps his most important work, consistently developed over the course of his life. It is a true mythological epic, a story of good and evil, monsters and heroes, great treasure and constant peril. More than anything it is …
Environmentalism In J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings, Sophie Butler
Environmentalism In J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings, Sophie Butler
4610 English: Individual Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
The theme of environmentalism within Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, while sometimes underlying, is an ever-present background to the characters and actions of Middle-Earth.The hero’s movements through nature contrasted with the criminal destruction of nature by the villains presents two clear perspectives about the treatment of nature, but Tolkien also inserts his perspective through the inclusion of Tree characters, like Ents. Trees and tree characters are an essential part of Tolkien's legendarium that help to illuminate the author's claims about environmentalism and the impacts of progress on the world. How characters interact with nature inform their ethics and point …

A Qualitative Examination Of Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy For Teaching Writing, Abby Rose Waldorf
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this research was to determine self-efficacy levels of Secondary English Education pre-service teachers attending two public universities concerning writing and the teaching of writing. The study found that pre-service teachers were confident and identified as writers, but they felt uncertain as teachers of writing. Past teachers’ praise was found to positively increase writing self-efficacy. Even though pre-service teachers enjoyed and looked forward to teaching writing, they felt they needed more time in the classroom and preparation from college courses. College courses were found to be lacking in the preparation needed for teaching writing. Pre-service teachers did not …
