In writing this thesis my object has been to compare the poetry of Catullus with that of Herrick. I have tried to bring out the influence of Catullus upon Herrick. I have also tried to make a critical study of each poet's works, and to bring out the similarity of their poetry. It was necessary to read all the poems of Catullus with the aid of the translation by F. W. Cornish, and to read the complete poems of Herrick.

In the pages that follow there has been no attempt to cover the entire subject of imitations of Greek tragedy in English literature. Four prominet literary works, considered as imitations of Greek tragedy, have been selected for discussion as to their imitative qualities. The guiding principles for this discussion were gathered from a perusal and analysis of the works of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides. Much valuable information was also gained from The Tragic Drama of the Greeks, by A. E. Haigh.

The present work is an attempt to survey the ancient comedy of the classical stage, by a study of its most outstanding exponents, Aristophanes, Menander, and Terence. The author hopes that this thesis may be acceptable to some of those, who without being professed scholars, are yet interested in the ancient Greek and Roman authors, and their conception of the comic art.

Besides the plays of Aristophanes, Menander, and Terence, the works of Willard Smith, Philippe Legrande, and Alfred Croiset are among the more important sources consulted in the writing of this thesis.

The purpose of this study is to give a general survey of the language most commonly used on the trail, and to establish the identity of a colloquial trader speech, the product of the Santa Fe Trail and the Santa Fe trade. To accomplish this purpose, a glossary of terms is submitted, prefaced by a discussion of the language sources, and a critical survey of the characteristics of the trader speech. Necessarily, a study of this length must be more of a survey than a comprehensive treatment of the subject.

The departure of Spenser for Ireland in 1580 as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton, newly appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland, marks a significant point in the poet's career. Save for occasional trips to England, the remaining years of his life Spenser spent in this "salvage land", among a hostile and turbulent people, far from the brilliance of English court life and "Elisa's blessed fields." This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1932, traces the revival of Catholic spirit in modern English poetry following its suppression after the Protestant Reformation. Lacaze argues that this revival began with the Oxford Movement of the nineteenth century and its leader, John Henry Newman, whose conversion to Catholicism and subsequent writing exercised a lasting influence on English literary and religious culture.

The writer has purposed in this essay to trace the rise, development, arid evolution of the comedy. of sensibility, from about the year 1700 to 1177. The movement was one, intricated with not a few interwoven trends. The fusion of sentimentalism into the comedy through social, moral, philosophic, literary, and historical factors has, in part, accounted for the intricacy of the genre, known as the comedy of sensibility. Few authors have considered it worth while to devote much time to the amassed dramatic productions of the eighteenth century. Thus, the complexity ·of the problem is increased.
