Characterization In The Novels Of John Galsworthy, Charlie Scott

John Galsworthy said of his novels that they were "a criticism of life." This definition is generally recognized and has been accepted by critics as an approach to the study of his works. This thesis proposes an examination of one specific method by which Galsworthy criticized the life of his times: the grouping of characters of his novels into types representative of the society he knew.

This thesis is a study of the metrical practices, sources of imagery, and philosophy of life of Robert Frost.

The metrical study, based on Frost's blank verse only, was made for the purpose of determining the quality of his blank verse, and the effect produced by the use of substitutions, feminine endings, run-on lines, and end-stop lines. The metrical tables have been compiled after a careful study of 1811 lines of Frost's blank verse. Ten of what are commonly considered among his best poems in blank verse were used as a basis for the study. The metrical findings in the …

Kentucky, following in the footsteps of her parent state, Virginia, has given to America some of her most distinguished statesmen. She gave to the Confederacy its only president, Jefferson Davis, and to the Federal Union its war president, Abraham Lincoln. Housed in a noble pile of imperishable granite, on its exact original site, near Hodgenville, the humble log cabin in which Lincoln was born is now preserved as a national shrine. At Fairview a towering obelisk marks the birthplace of Jefferson Davis.

The purpose of this work is to bring to the reader's knowledge one of the greatest Seventeenth Century poets. An intense treatment would, however, necessitate the writing of volumes for, although Abraham Cowley is now considered by modern critics an unreadable poets, his works are numerous and contain many valuable ideals. To his contemporaries Cowley ranked supreme. John Milton's wife is said to have reported that her husband's favorite English poets were Spenser, Shakespeare, and Cowley. While Dryden declared to one of his associates, "His authority is almost sacred to me."

Folk cures form a conspicuous part of Nebraska lore. Nebraska pioneers from many states and many countries brought with them certain remedies which they believed particularly efficacious, and which became a tradition in families or communities throughout the state. The cures in the following collection have come directly from the residents of the state and are not limited to any specific locality. They have been recorded as nearly as possible just as the informants gave them. Some alterations have been made in diction and sentence structure to clarify ambiguity.
