Kansas has an unusual and a brilliant history. The men who lived within its boundaries when this history was being made, and who helped make it, are becoming older each year; historians and biographers have only a short time in which to secure their stories, which will, otherwise, go with them when they die. With this thought in mind, the author has selected the life of William Barclay Masterson, a colorful figure in the history of Dodge City, Kansas, for preservation.

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in 1943, traces the evolving concept of God in the poetry of the American Negro from the era of slavery through the early 1940s. Sister Mary Helena Jones examines the poets' treatment of the divine attributes of God, including His Power, Love, Justice, Goodness, Immutability, and Mercy, and His relation to man as Saviour, Friend, Master, Shepherd, and King, arguing that this faith, once central to Black religious and poetic expression, has weakened over …

I have observed in reading novels by both white and Negro authors that only certain types of Negroes have been portrayed. The question kept rising in my mind, Why? Usually it is the highly colorful, sensational, immoral type that is shown to the exclusion of the self-respecting, decent living, ordinary, everyday Negro.

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1943, examines the theological content of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost through systematic comparison with the accepted doctrines of Christian and non-Christian religious traditions. The study analyzes six major theological themes in the poem: the Trinity, Creation, Free Will, Satan, the Fall of Man, and the Redemption. For each theme, the author compares Milton's poetic elaborations against the teachings of Catholic Church Fathers including Augustine, Aquinas, Hilary of Poitiers, and Chrysostom, as well …

There is a need for a clearer understanding of the methods by which vocabularies can be enlarged most effectively. Results of experiments indicate that pupils are unable to recognize their own deficiencies and needs in respect to the meanings of words; consequently they need some type of guidance in enlarging their meaning vocabularies. Teachers are agreed that word lists are a non-effective device. They are agreed, too, that not one or a few techniques are being used to teach the meanings of new words, but many techniques. There is disagreement among the critics as to the classification under which Frost is to be placed. Some say that he is strictly a local poet because he deals so much with New England material. Others say that he is a universal poet; for, although he does write extensively of his own region, its climate, its characters, and its culture, he is, nevertheless, a universal poet who vests these local or provincial elements with meaning as broad in scope as the experience and thought of man.
