The purpose of this study is to search out in the works of Thomas Wolfe his criticism on a number of subjects which formed the major interests of his life; I shall present his views on these subjects by a selection of quotations or summaries of the longer quotations, together with an examination of his treatment of certain scenes and characters wherein such criticism is implicit. At the end of each chapter I shall draw conclusions and summarize his beliefs on each subject, and finally, at the end of the thesis, I hall summarize the conclusions and estimate the sum …

Among Hawthorne critics, only Matthiessen, Winters, and Higginson have made comment on the multiple choice technique employed by Hawthorne in his presentation of the symbol. Matthissen recognizes its potentialities; Winters condemns it unmercifully; and T.W. Higginson has written an article in which he suggested that the device "was perhaps borrowed by Austin's Peter Rug." The multiple choice technique, or, as Winters terms it, the formula of alternative possibilities, consists of showing not only one correspondence between the symbol and the thing it symbolizes but several, and giving the reader a choice of interpretations. Although Thomas Hood lived an uneventful and somewhat undramatic life, it was not entirely fruitless. His unparalleled misfortune in health and economy was scarcely offset by a felicitous family life; but his poetry--some inane, some mediocre, some excellent--balanced an otherwise pathetic existence. There has been no conscious attempt in this paper to present Thomas as an undiscovered genius. His works and his life have been evaluated for their peculiar merit alone, but a study of those has revealed points hitherto vague and misunderstood as well as forgotten.

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1947, presents a survey of British public opinion during the entirety of the American Civil War. Drawing on contemporary newspapers, pamphlets, letters, diaries, parliamentary speeches, and official government records, the study analyzes the conflicting opinions expressed by individuals, organizations, and government officials in England from the outbreak of hostilities through the conclusion of peace. The thesis finds that English upper and middle classes generally sympathized with the Confederacy, influenced by historical parallels to the …
