This thesis will concern three facets of small town life: (1) The communities in thelr development have assumed certain general characteristics which apply to the small town regardless of its location and which are unique to a small town. (2) Within the community certain members have obtained social promenence because of their professional position. Their training in most instances was taken outside the town, and their statue was assured by the needs of the community. Among these are the minister, the teacher, the doctor, the newspaper editor, and the town magnate. (3) In small-town literature certain "characters" often appear. They …

The following

essays - investigative, critical, or interpretativee -were selected from the 1964 Senior Seminar in English.

It was the primary purpose of this Seminar to penetrate into the three types of tragedy written during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods: the de casibus, Italianate, and Domestic. Nadeleine Doran's Endeavours of Art was used as the basis for categorizing the various plays studied during the semester. Of the papers herein bound, only two of the above categories are represented: de casibus tragedy in Coriolanus, Dr. Faustus, and Bussy  D'Ambois; ltalianate tragedy in The Spanish Tragedy, Othello, and The Duchess of Malfi.

Form And Structure Of Some Of Edwin Arlington Robinson's Tilbury Town Poems, Christina Peckler

It is the purpose of this study to explore several of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems in order to show the poet’s force of language and prosody and to reveal as much as possible his total poetic artistry. The poems are representative of his familiar, shorter Tilbury Town portraits and are taken from his early, middle, and late periods. An honest appraisal will be made to determine the true worth of the poetry, and an attempt will be made to show that Edwin Arlington Robinson deserves a respected position in modern American letters.

Dame Rose Macaulay possessed two qualities, a comic spirit and an intellectual pessimism, which made her one of England's finest modern satirists. Her satire has limitations. First, because of rapid and rather prolific productivity, some of the satire is repetitious. Second, the reader who enjoys satire is already aware of many of the flaws and incongruities of society. He has probably ridiculed them himself, so he may not find the satire as fresh and original as the author hoped it would be. The opening scene of The Portrait of a Lady takes place upon the broad, sunlit lawns of Gardencourt. Yet, even in this expansive setting, the most essential character in the novel, the protagonist, is, curiously, no more than a narrow, shadowy speculation symbolized by a few odd words found in a telegram of dubious value. The only worth of these words comes in the amount of curiosity they can arouse in the other characters and in the reader. My method of research was determined by the poet's method of writing. Hopkins does not use language as he finds it but wrings from words and word groupings as much function and meaning as possible. Thus, there are words in his poetry which fit poetically in context, but it is necessary to delve into their obsolete or other remote meanings to obtain an understanding of the precise idea expressed or to obtain its enriching implications.
