Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks Apr 1966

Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks

Faculty Honor Lectures

In November of 1898 Jack London, aged 22, sold his first short story, "To the Man on Trail," to Overland Monthly for the sum of $5. Three months later The Black Cat magazine paid him $40 for "A Thousand Deaths." This was the beginning of a writing career that in 17 years was to produce 149 short stories, not including his tramping experiences which he published under the title of The Road, 19 novels, and a number of essays. If all were accumulated and published, they would fill 50 volumes. Besides this, he wrote a number of newspaper articles (war …

The Theatre Of The Absurd, Edith Beirne Brooks Apr 1966

The Theatre Of The Absurd, Edith Beirne Brooks

Master's Theses

An introduction to the Theatre of the Absurd confronts the viewer with a meaningless, chaotic situation. Ludicrous people mouth meaningless dialogue, and the "plot" seems to move in ever diminishing concentric circles. One is stunned by the nothingness and the void which accompanies the termination of stage action. Why was it written? What was the author trying to convey? These are questions which fill the minds of the audience. The purpose was not monetary, nor was it sensationalism, because both of these could be achieved in a more expedient manner. Thoughtful study and exploration are demanded to answer one's questions …

Influences On And Development Of John Dos Passos' Collectivist Technique, William Alfred Evans Jan 1966

Influences On And Development Of John Dos Passos' Collectivist Technique, William Alfred Evans

English Language and Literature ETDs

Few writers in the history of American literature have evoked as much controversy as has John Roderigo Dos Passos; the greater part of the controversy, however, has been centered in his social and political attitudes rather than in his literacy achievements. His social and political attitudes have been discussed at great length, particularly during the past thirty years. But only recently have critics begun to evaluate Dos Passos’ literary successes properly and to set him in his rightful place in American literature as an effective and powerful innovator of a special kind of technique in the novel, the collectivist technique.

Milton And Marvell--And Samuel Parker, Henry F. Lippincott Jr. Jan 1966

Milton And Marvell--And Samuel Parker, Henry F. Lippincott Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis explores the ways in which Samuel Parker, an obscure philosopher and theologian who became Bishop of Oxford, played a role in the literary relationship of John Milton and Andrew Marvell. Chapter I gives the sketchy biographical facts which link the three men. As a Latin Secretary to Oliver Cromwell, Milton helped the young Marvell advance his prospects until Marvell ultimately became a Member of Parliament and a government emissary. But as Marvell rose in political circles, Milton gradually retired from public life. Perhaps to repay past favors, Marvell defended Milton from scurrilous attacks by Parker and his followers …
