English Language and Literature ETDs

Four years ago I found myself ready to begin writing poetry. Like Denise Levertov, who once described herself in retrospect as “twenty-four-going-on-sixteen,” I was a late budder, (The few bits of scribbling I have left from earlier years are ample proof that my late start was the best course for me.) Charles Tomlinson was teaching an "advanced creative writing course" in poetry at the University of New Mexico at that time, and I studied with him. The following year, I was able to study under Robert Creeley in a course with the same title and number. I feel very lucky …

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson Jan 1967

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

Good And Evil In The Lord Of The Rings, W. H. Auden Jan 1967

Good And Evil In The Lord Of The Rings, W. H. Auden

Tolkien Journal

Explores the interplay of good and evil in the story through the actions and motivations of species “capable of speech and therefore of moral reasoning,” and praises Tolkien for creating characters with a realistic moral balance. Makes the important observation that good characters can imagine being evil while evil characters cannot imagine being good. (Note that this piece is pre-Silmarillion and Auden’s assessment of the Elves is based only on LotR.) Reprinted in Critical Quarterly 10 (1968):138–42.

A Birthday Menu For Professor Tolkien, Nancy Smith Jan 1967

A Birthday Menu For Professor Tolkien, Nancy Smith

Tolkien Journal

As we all know, hobbits love celebrations, and occasions, and opportunities for feasting; and, beyond all else, they love birthdays. In the case of this particular author and gentleman, I am sure they would consider a seventy-fifth every bit as exciting as an eleventy- first.

Primary Concerns In The Poetry Of Robert Frost, La Verne Murphy Jan 1967

Primary Concerns In The Poetry Of Robert Frost, La Verne Murphy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to classify the poems' themes and to reveal frequency patterns, thereby disclosing Frost's heaviest interests. The study is limited to an analysis of the poems contained in the Complete Poems, which includes most of his poetry. The Masque of Reason and The Masque of Mercy, appearing at the end of the Complete Poems, are not included in the study because they are allegorical poem-plays of the Job and Jonah stories respectively. While the study is confined primarily to an interpretation of the poems themselves, important critical studies relating to the themes are …

Miss O'Connor's work has already been subjected to much critical analysis and will undoubtedly be subjected to a great deal more before there is substantial agreement on just what it is that she is saying. The purpose of this study is to consider her attitude toward her art; to examine her philosophy …

As a basis for Prometheus Unbound, which he completed in 1819 and which is his masterpiece, Shelley used Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound. The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt Jan 1967

The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt

Master's Theses

If James Joyce l:ad written novels with largely rural settings, like many written by Lawrence and Faulkner, it would not be particularly unusual to find many references to animals and birds. However, Joyce's novels take place in Dublin, which certainly is not the ideal habitat for large numbers of animals; and yet the number of references to animals and birds in his novels is astounding. The brief portion of Stephen Hero contains nearly fifty primary references, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has ninety-four, and there are more than eight hundred in Ulysses. Not only is the …

Nature, Man, And God In Robinson Jeffers’ Inhumanism, Chloe Winifred Armstrong Jan 1967

Nature, Man, And God In Robinson Jeffers’ Inhumanism, Chloe Winifred Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Inhumanism, Robinson Jeffers' philosophical solution to the problems of modern society, is highly individualistic and reflects this author's pessimistic attitude toward the present and the future of the species. His definition, stated in prose as: " ... a shifting of emphasis and significance from man to not-man; the rejection of human solipsism and the recognition of the transhuman magnificence.", presents a cosmography made up of three divisions: man, not-man, and the transhuman magnificence. Man, in this definition, includes all the species homo sapiens from its beginning to some future end. Jeffers feels that the species came into being through environmental …

A Comparison Of Two Medieval Story-Tellers : Geoffrey Chaucer And John Gower, Margaret Joan Byerly Jan 1967

A Comparison Of Two Medieval Story-Tellers : Geoffrey Chaucer And John Gower, Margaret Joan Byerly

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to compare the narrative and framing techniques used by Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower. These authors were selected for several reasons. Being contemporaries, they lived through the days of the reign of Richard II, his deposition, and the accession of Henry IV. This was a time change: the age of chivalry and true knighthood was ending; the middle class was establishing commerce, towns, guilds; openly and violently the peasants were beginning to reject their servile positions; the corruption within the organized church was being publicly exposed, and efforts, believed heretical by some, were being …

The Development Of Twentieth Century Criticisms Of The Canterbury Tales, Donald Keith Gosnell Jan 1967

The Development Of Twentieth Century Criticisms Of The Canterbury Tales, Donald Keith Gosnell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It will be the purpose of this thesis to survey and to evaluate twentieth-century criticisms of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Because the topic is so broad, it is necessary to find methods of limiting the subject so that it· may be adequately covered herein. This paper will be limited primarily to books published on the topic under consideration. To cover all the work in periodical literature would go beyond the scope of this study. Perhaps that task can be covered by someone else.
