A Great Debate In Poetic Theory: Brooks, Wheelwright, Crane & Olson, Janice Carrell May 1971

A Great Debate In Poetic Theory: Brooks, Wheelwright, Crane & Olson, Janice Carrell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Elder Olson has said that at the Biblical Tower of Babel the people did not begin to talk nonsense but only what seemed like nonsense. This paper concerns an intellectual tower where important debates are held, but unfortunately the language is not a universal one; therefor, because all too often terms have evolved without adequate definition, disagreement occurs where reconciliation appears impossible.

The very title of this thesis could be misleading to the reader if he considers debate in its formal sense. What is here intended is the controversy in the efforts of respected scholars to understand and establish the …

Thoreau's Argument In "Economy", William H. Hansen May 1971

Thoreau's Argument In "Economy", William H. Hansen

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the second paragraph of Walden, Thoreau explains that he is going to give a sincere and an honest account of his life in Nature to satisfy the curiosity of his friends who have expressed a desire to know the details of his two-year adventure at Walden Pond. In the third paragraph, he say's that he is also going to write something about the bad condition of his neighbors in and around Concord. These first two statements of purpose are important not only because they indicate what the book is going to be about, but also because they represent …

The Folio Society: Handsome Books At Minimal Cost, Susan Rainey

The Courier

In 1969 the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University acquired the personal archives of Charles Ede, founder and designer of the Folio Society of England. The archives include all the books published by the Society between 1947 and 1967, a complete run of the periodical The Folio and some manuscript material. The Folio Society was founded in 1947 to produce well-designed editions of classic texts at minimal cost. Its beginnings in post-war austerity determined its continued production of handsome but not over elaborate books. As the founder of the Society said, "The real challenge, we felt, was to equate …

Melville's America : Democratic Brotherhood, Nancy Yeager Bailey Apr 1971

Melville's America : Democratic Brotherhood, Nancy Yeager Bailey

Master's Theses

Herman Melville had a deep faith in his fellow man. He felt that man's devotion to other men, a feeling of brotherhood between men, was the essential bond of humanity. Men had to acknowledge their responsibility to their own kind in order to achieve order and happiness in the rapidly changing, ambiguous world of the mid-nineteenth century. He rejected transcendental philosophy because each man had to achieve his own convictions and peace of mind through personal contact with nature, which led to the isolation of the individual. Melville believed that men could not live together in a society by cultivating …

The Contributions And Effects Of The Drama On Paradise Lost, Robert Elliott Bayliss Apr 1971

The Contributions And Effects Of The Drama On Paradise Lost, Robert Elliott Bayliss

Master's Theses

Upon reading John Milton's Paradise Lost, one cannot help but notice that its tone, its moving scenes and confrontations, and its moments of psychological and cathartic impact all help to shape what one might call the poem's total effect -- the impressions it leaves with the reader. Upon close examination it becomes obvious that Milton was consummately adept in his adaptation of the dramatic element in his great epic. What is generally unrecognized, yet surprisingly evident, is that the dramatic element plays a unique and singularly important role in building the poem's grandeur. This dramatic element, more than any of …

Reason, Time, And Redemption In Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Diane S. Bonds Apr 1971

Reason, Time, And Redemption In Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Diane S. Bonds

Master's Theses

When Joseph Heller 's Catch-22 appeared in 1961, it met with extreme reactions from reviewers. Those who attacked the novel did so with fervor. An anonymous reviewer in Daedalus summed up many unfavorable criticisms of the book by charging that Catch-22 wa s not "written"; that it had no story or real characters; that it was repetitive and formless; finally, that it was an example of the most "destructive and immoral" kind of literature--a novel which spat "in-discrimimitely at business and the professions, at respectability, at ideals, at all visible tokens of superiority." Favorable reviews focused mainly on the brilliance …

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas Apr 1971

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas

Honors Theses

George Bernard Shaw's literary career lasted over seventy years. He wrote prolifically. The most complete collection of his work, the Ayot St. Lawrence Edition, runs to over thirty-one volume, yet it is not all inclusive. His efforts were always motivated by the desire to expand and expound his social and political philosophy. Although the canon of Shavian criticism approaches his motives from a wide of variety of angles and avenues, Shaw singled out "passion of pure political Weltverbesserungwahn (worldbettermentcrase)" as his "own devouring malady." Defining his artistic objectives as conveying a "feeling" to an audience and making "them sympathetic with …

Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne Feb 1971

Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne

English Faculty Publications

The "Affective Fallacy" labeled by Wimsatt and Beardsley and denigrated by an entire generation of critics must be restored'to legitimacy-as probably the most fundamental principle of literature. The effect of a text takes precedence over the objectivity of its "intra-referential":content since this content is meaningful only to the extent that it produces this effect. The concerted effort of formalists to deny or somehow bypass this self-evident axiom has been unique in the history of criticism and may be traced to a variety of causes, not the least of which has been a conservative isolation of literature from its social context. …
