"The Countries Sweet Simplicity": Devonshire Life In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, David F. Beer Apr 1972

"The Countries Sweet Simplicity": Devonshire Life In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, David F. Beer

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation explores the influence of his life in Devon on the poetry of Robert Herrick. Much has been naively assumed regarding this influence, particularly by authors of short popular articles, or in brief introductions to a selection of the poet’s work in anthologies. Little has been actually produced, however, to substantiate the claim that Herrick's poems on country life are what they are because the poet moved from London to Dean Prior in 1630 and lived there almost eighteen years before publishing his complete works in one volume. That many of his poems cannot be dated with absolute certainty …

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson Apr 1972

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Kate Chopin's extant fiction includes two novels and nearly one hundred short stories and sketches. The present study closely examines that fiction by chronological periods in order to present a coherent view of the author's artistic development and philosophical concerns.

Kate Chopin wrote her first novel, At Fault, after completing only a few short stories. Although the novel is clumsily executed, it introduces most of the themes which characterize her mature work. Her early stories, primarily designed for juvenile and family magazines, feature picturesque characters and sentimental resolutions. As she gradually developed less limiting markets for her work, Mrs. …

The A.E. Coppard Papers At Syracuse, Arsiné Schmavonian Apr 1972

The A.E. Coppard Papers At Syracuse, Arsiné Schmavonian

The Courier

Some of the most choice collections in the Manuscript Department of Syracuse University Libraries are also among the most modest in extent. The papers of English author and poet A.E. Coppard fit into both categories. Housed comfortably in a single box, fifty-five letters, three short stories in holograph and one speech provide a close look at Coppard's literary theories, criticism, opinions of his own work and that of a few others, reaction to approaches regarding dramatizing, filming or televising his prose works, dealings with publishers, and his activities on behalf of world peace through the Authors' World Peace Appeal in …

Lyly's Midas As An Allegory Of Tyranny, Stephen S. Hilliard Apr 1972

Lyly's Midas As An Allegory Of Tyranny, Stephen S. Hilliard

Department of English: Faculty Publications

John Lyly's Midas is structured in terms of traditional allegorizations of the Ovidian myth that represent Midas as an avaricious and ignorant tyrant. Lyly is thus concerned with a theme popular in the public theater, but he treats it in allegorical manner distinctive in its focus on theme rather than character or action. The play first portrays Midas's mistaken choice of a private end, the accumulation of wealth for its own sake and as a means of financing lechery and aggression, then suggests the difficulties this causes in the governing of his kingdom. The episode in which Midas judges the …

Shakespeare's Coriolanus:The Icon Of Mars., Claus-Peter Buechmann Feb 1972

Shakespeare's Coriolanus:The Icon Of Mars., Claus-Peter Buechmann

English Language and Literature ETDs

The aim of this study is to suggest a perhaps more satisfactory reading than has hitherto been offered of Shakespeare's Coriolanus by exploring the consequences of Caius Marius Coriolanus' view of himself as “son and Heire to Mars.” Previous studies of the play in general and its awesome protagonist in particular have led to either critical uneasiness or outright condemnation; however, an approach to Coriolanus through the Renaissance icon of Mars, I find, renders an interpretation which establishes great conceptual integrity rather than faltering artistic powers on Shakespeare’s part and, furthermore, accounts for the frequently noted absence of “that peculiar …

Richard Brautigan: Youth Fishing In America, Cheryl Walker Jan 1972

Richard Brautigan: Youth Fishing In America, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Richard Brautigan is an epiphenomenon in American literature. He seems to represent some sort of insubstantial alternative. While the academy of letters reads Beckett, Borges, and Nabokov, the kids read Brautigan...His appeal consists primarily in an irrepressible optimism (probably the brand of a woodsy Pacific Northwest background), a style flashing with artifice, and a total disregard for effete university culture. Mr. Brautigan is not himself the product of American higher education or of much formal training of any kind. Furthermore, his fund of simplicity and optimism is a relief for some from the profound despair of writers like Beckett. To …
