William Cowper’S The Task: A Study In Transition, Roy Leo Crady Jr.
William Cowper’S The Task: A Study In Transition, Roy Leo Crady Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Hidden deep in the shelves of most libraries in England and America is an obscure, dusty volume of poetry containing one of the minor classics in the English language, a poem entitled The Task. Written by the eighteenth-century poet William Cowper, this very long and loosely structured poem won widespread recognition and acclaim in its day, only to gradually fade into a premature oblivion. Today The Task is known primarily to a handful of literary scholars whose arcane and esoteric business it is to go beyond the turnpikes of literary history into the labyrinthine lanes and paths of our literary …

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno
From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It was the purpose of my thesis to trace the evolution of Steinbeck's view, in his non-fiction of what the conflict between good and evil consists, along with the development of this concern, and its related stylistic influence, on his fiction, in order to show that Steinbeck's major concern was for man's relationship to this conflict.
I was alerted to the existence of an evolution in view in Steinbeck by the chance reading of his last novel, The Winter of Our Discontent, in juxtaposition with several early novels. In order best to follow this change, then, I read all …

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass
Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass
Senior Scholar Papers
The thirty poems collected here were written durin 1972-197. They begin as rather imagistic pieces, but the imagist tendencies are tempered with a preoccupation with the process of emotion. The poems progress through a middle period of finding a poetic voice by combining elements of other styles with the stylistic tendencies that rise out of myself. The subject matter is deliberately varied. The poems emerge, in the last few pieces, as the beginnings of a voice which combines a preoccupation with man in the unity of the world, the state of natural world and the nature of its retaliation for …

Maps, George F. Wetmore
Maps, George F. Wetmore
English Language and Literature ETDs
Maps is about myself, "the map is an exact abstract/of what happens out on the road" says the poet and the road is a tortuous one. The events it occasions are sometimes cosmological as in "Numbers" and "Twelve Notes" where an archetypal numerology orders the poet's vision. At other times the vision is a surreal visitation like those in "Six Visitations." But the bulk of the poetry like the bulk of experience is literal. "Barnstable Harbor," "A Dirty Movie," "Fishing" and others try simply to state with Zen-like clarity the literal truth of the poet's experience. In these poems the …
Willa Cather: A Feminist Study, Sharon R. Barba
Willa Cather: A Feminist Study, Sharon R. Barba
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation is an application of the principles of feminist criticism to the fiction of Willa Cather. It questions the male critical estimate of Cather and examines elements in her work which have either not been acknowledged or have been distorted in male criticism. The study views Cather primarily as a woman writer, emphasizing the feminine consciousness in her work and focusing on the Cather heroine as an expression of that consciousness. It centers on a feminist reading of five novels: O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, My Antonia, A Lost Lady, and My Mortal Enemy. Alexandra Bergson, Thea …

Faculty Honor Lectures
CelVantes, almost as if he would at all costs avoid the incredible fireworks of Chaucer's Dame Prudence as she counsels Melibee on justice, from a vast cascade of learning and proverbial wisdom, in his Prologue to Don Quixote, says "I am, moreover, extremely lazy when it comes to hunting up authors who will say for me what I am unable to say for myself. And if I am in a state of suspense and my thoughts are woolgathering, you will find a sufficient explanation in what I have just told you." Then his clever friend advises the use of "scraps …
