Shakespeare's Treatment Of Love : The Mature Tragedies, Albert E. Clark May 1974

Shakespeare's Treatment Of Love : The Mature Tragedies, Albert E. Clark

Master's Theses

The machinery of criticism has been extensively applied to those plays in the Shakespeare canon often referred to as the mature tragediess Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, and Antony and Cleopatra, One seeking enlightenment in veritably any area of interest will find the means in the varied approaches which have proliferated through four hundred years of Shakespeare criticism. New and valid interpretations testify to a continuing need for insight into Shakespeare's arts nevertheless,. the word "supererogatory" must surely have occurred to even the moat resilient seeker after Shakespearean truth. A spate of learned articles and scholarly tomes inundate, and the burden is …

Consciousness And The Unconscious: Henry James And Jungian Psychology, Marlene L. Hall May 1974

Consciousness And The Unconscious: Henry James And Jungian Psychology, Marlene L. Hall

English Language and Literature ETDs

James's early, middle, and late works demonstrate the author's continuing interest in what have become specific Jungian archetypes. This interest, which centers upon the consciousness-expanding potential of the archetype, is most completely expressed in James's "major phase" novels. Here the anima, the shadow, and the mask, as well as other Jungian archetypes, take the form of specific images and personfications, both helpful and harmful. And, when The Awkward Age, the last long novel of James's middle period, is read with the "major phase" novels, the total effect, without destroying the completeness of any single novel, mythopoetically suggests the history of …

Reality And Illusion In Miguel De Cervantes' Don Quixote And John Barth's The Sot Weed Factor, Vicki Redmond Apr 1974

Reality And Illusion In Miguel De Cervantes' Don Quixote And John Barth's The Sot Weed Factor, Vicki Redmond

Honors Theses

Illusion is an integral part of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote and John Barth's The Sot Weed Factor. It plays an important part in both the characters of the protagonists, Don Quixote and Ebenezer Cooke, respectively, and in the lives and actions of several of the secondary characters. Furthermore, the reader of these works himself is influenced by the aura of illusion and fantasy which surrounds all the actions in these novels. The idea of illusion and fantasy that is so prevalent colors the way in which the reader identifies with these characters and their deeds. In both of these …

The Two Phases Of Swift's Satiric Art, Arthur G. Elser Apr 1974

The Two Phases Of Swift's Satiric Art, Arthur G. Elser

English Language and Literature ETDs

Critics have searched for a critical pattern with which to describe the ironic works of Jonathan Swift that will also help determine the meaning of those works. However, the ebullience of the Hack of the Tale and the good natured Isaac Bickerstaff do not seem to fit into a critical pattern which will also include the inhumanity of the modest proposer or the misanthropic Gulliver of book four. Recognizing that the early ironic works of Swift, those written prior to his "exile" into Ireland, seem more light and humorous than those ironic pieces written after his six year abstention from …

A Comparison Of Stock Love Situations In The Works Of Petrarch, Donne, And Cervantes, John W. Metzger Apr 1974

A Comparison Of Stock Love Situations In The Works Of Petrarch, Donne, And Cervantes, John W. Metzger

Honors Theses

The works of Petrarch, Donne, and Cervantes have in common a considerable emphasis on stock love situations. These stock situations include such occurrences as the meeting of lovers, the reaction of the lover to the disdain of his lady, the burning desire of the lover to be physically present with his lady, and the parting of lovers. A certain twist in a situation, originally used by Petrarch, in the poetry of Donne or prose of Cervantes, can provide an excellent insight into the ideas concerning love of all three authors. Petrarch espoused a rather narrow love philosophy. In the great …

Goe, And Finde A Mistris : The Concepts Of Woman In The Poetry Of John Donne: The Elegies, The Anniversaires, The Songs And Sonets, Leanne Wade Beorn Apr 1974

Goe, And Finde A Mistris : The Concepts Of Woman In The Poetry Of John Donne: The Elegies, The Anniversaires, The Songs And Sonets, Leanne Wade Beorn

Master's Theses

This study of the concepts of woman in the poems, combined with an analysis of the poems' internal structure and content in relation to the literary background, seems to me to be a most profitable approach to the whole of Donne's love poetry. By focusing on the concepts of woman I shall provide a common basis for comparison, since woman figures in all of the poems but one. By summarizing the characteristics of the major literary traditions about love operative in Donne's time, I shall provide information which is essential to understanding the diversity of attitudes in the poems. And …

The Promethean Archetype, Lois Viscoli Feb 1974

The Promethean Archetype, Lois Viscoli

English Language and Literature ETDs

The Promethean archetype reaches its fullest development in Blake and Shelley. In order to determine a common outline as well as variations of content within the myth, descriptions, aspects, and symbols associated with Prometheus in the accounts of Hesiod, Aeschylus, Apollodorus, Apollonius, Lucian, and Pausanias reveal that the archetype is a pattern which persists amid variations.

The core of the archetype – that man must pay a price for fire – suggests that, although greater awareness is available, man must suffer for it. On a cosmic-mythical level, the works of Hesiod and Aeschylus parallel works of philosophy, poetry, and religion …

Sexism And The Newberry Medal, Jean Clingman Huckleberry Jan 1974

Sexism And The Newberry Medal, Jean Clingman Huckleberry

Graduate Research Papers

It is time now to think, time to become conscious and to delve into a sample of Newbery winners. Four Newbery books were chosen for this study in an effort to compare the earlier winners, when sexism was not such a popular issue, with two current winners to discern whether a change had taken place, if indeed a change was necessary. The two older books are Invincible Louisa by Cornelia Meigs, the 1934 winner, and Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright, the 1939 winner. The 1930's was chosen because it was a decade in which every Newbery book was written by …

Tommy And The Cloud, Leon Green Jan 1974

Tommy And The Cloud, Leon Green

Graduate Research Papers

Tommy and the Cloud is an attempt to create an experience. It tells of a small boy's imagination, and his search for something more satisfying; than that provided by ordinary childhood.

The story is followed by a subjective analysis of Tommy and the Cloud in light of certain literary qualities shared by "good" children's books. Some of the concepts to be explored will include theme--the underlying idea or ideas of a story; originality of idea or presentation--there's a difference between a truly unique approach and an unrealistic overly-fantastic "ripoff"; and characterization--do the people seem real and lifelike? The reader may …
