Tuning In The Boiler Room And The Cotton Patch: New Directions In The Study Of Afro-American Folklore, Daryl Cumber Dance
Tuning In The Boiler Room And The Cotton Patch: New Directions In The Study Of Afro-American Folklore, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
One of the first problems in the study of folklore is, of course, the collection of materials. In almost every area of Black folklore, the collecting was initiated by whites. As I have noted elsewhere, "Black folk forms seem to thrive quietly and abashedly in the Black community as items of private enjoyment and public shame until they are ' discovered ' by whites who legitimize them for the American public-Black and white. Such has been the case with the general folk tales (the animal tales, the etiological myths, the Slave John tales, etc.), the spirituals, and the blues. The …
Encounter With Otherness : Nature And Identity In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Beatrice Jensen Smith
Encounter With Otherness : Nature And Identity In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Beatrice Jensen Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Ole Edvart Rolvaag, the Norwegian-American novelist of the immigrant experience, is recognized primarily for one work, Giants in the Earth, frequently accredited the novel that deals most effectively with the human cost underlying the glorious national achievement of westward expansion. Though the estimate is a positive one, by being categorized so succinctly, Giants is in some danger of being. perfunctorily dismissed as an excellent frontier novel and little else.
Though Rolvaag, by his own statement, intended to memorialize the human tragedies so easily forgotten in the onrush of settlement, the implications of his narrative go far beyond the historical …
The Influence Of Ben Jonson On The Poetry Of Yeats, Wayne Kenneth Chapman
The Influence Of Ben Jonson On The Poetry Of Yeats, Wayne Kenneth Chapman
Dissertations and Theses
What this thesis attempts to do is to render as full a picture as possible of Yeats's interest in Ben Jonson, using to the fullest advantage the many hints that come from Yeats and secondary criticism. Specifically, the focus of this paper is on the process by which Yeats was able, like Eliot, Pound and others, to found a tough, new poetic style with reference to this seventeenth-century period of Jonson. Yeats's reading of "Jonson and the others," which took place at the turn of this century, triggered a whole series of discoveries by Yeats which anticipated the aesthetic beliefs …
Autobiography And Art: Aesthetic Uses Of The Creative Process In The Autobiographies Of Henry Adams, Mark Twain, And Henry James, Lawrence Oscar Holmberg
Autobiography And Art: Aesthetic Uses Of The Creative Process In The Autobiographies Of Henry Adams, Mark Twain, And Henry James, Lawrence Oscar Holmberg
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study posits a single frame of reference, the artist's own creative practice, for Adams', Twain's, and James' autobiographies. These works show the consciousness of the artists' struggle with form for their mercurial ideas. The form these artists sought was not a simple selection of literary genres; it was the search for a vehicle to support their inquiry, a way of composition which was comfortable and so could free their speculation from purely formal concerns. These works are not intended as formal tours de force, yet in seeking their natural mode of expression each author produced unusual and experimental works.
The Utopia Within: Some Psychological Aspects Of Edward Bellamy's Early Writing, Betty Cobey Senescu
The Utopia Within: Some Psychological Aspects Of Edward Bellamy's Early Writing, Betty Cobey Senescu
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study examines the early writing of Edward Bellamy, that done before the publication of Looking Backward, to determine whether he himself was justified in calling it "psychologic." Because of the highly autobiographical nature of his work and his own tendency toward introspection, I have reviewed and thoroughly examined the few known facts of his early life. His preoccupation with guilt feelings and anxiety may be partially attributed to his own early rejection of the orthodox religion of his parents and to his seeming inability to meet their high expectations.
For the most part I have chosen to study those …
The Confidence Man: Melville's Problem Of Faith, Thomas Vaughan Quirk
The Confidence Man: Melville's Problem Of Faith, Thomas Vaughan Quirk
English Language and Literature ETDs
Melville's approach to The Confidence-Man appears to resemble the same creative method he had intimated to Hawthorne in the "Agatha" letters. There, he had suggested that the true story of the long abandoned woman was a tale "instinct with significance" and might be told by merely building about this "skeleton" of reality. Similarly, Melville's acquaintance with the original confidence man through newspaper and magazine articles may have inspired him to draw out the "significances" latent in the story of this actual contemporary swindler.
However, Melville did not restrict his considerations to this character alone. He placed his fictional rogue on …
Lancelot: A Study Of The Development Of His Character From Celtic Origin To Chretien And Malory, Ike R. Stoneberger
Lancelot: A Study Of The Development Of His Character From Celtic Origin To Chretien And Malory, Ike R. Stoneberger
Theses & Honors Papers
In this thesis I have researched the origin and development of the character of Lancelot . I have attempted to make intelligible analyses of contributions of his character to the development of Arthurian romance. In so doing , I have stressed the origin of his character according to the belief that Lancelot's antecedents lie in Celtic myth; I have outlined the role of Lancelot in certain medieval romances-- "Le Chevalier de la Charrette" by Chretien de Troyes and Le Morte D 'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory ; and , I have shown how the character of Lancelot illustrates and glorifies …

Hierarchy And The Self In The Trilogy Of C. S. Lewis, Connie R. Phillips
Hierarchy And The Self In The Trilogy Of C. S. Lewis, Connie R. Phillips
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
C.S. Lewis' view of the individual in a hierarchical universe is not simply the restatement of a static medieval ideal. In his trilogy he presents the unfolding of the hierarchical view of the universe, with emphasis on time and the growth of the self into a model of universal reality.
If Lewis be found guilty of "historicism," it must be in his belief that man and nature are losing their neutrality, that good and evil are becoming more separated, more distinct. The growing bifurcation and consequences of two opposing views of the individual form a tension in Lewis' work. Much …

Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
This passage suggests something of the nature of Black humor and the function it has served, not only in the slave narratives, but in the folk tales and throughout the history of recorded literature from William Wells Brown to Amiri Baraka. The life revealed in all of these sources is shown to often be alternately degrading and courageous, tragic and absurdly comic, hopeless and yet enduring; indeed that life could hardly ever be termed merely amusing. And the Black character, though he may be seen to laugh, can hardly be deemed carefree, unbothered, satisfied, even truly happy. Indeed the paradox …
