The Psychomachia By Marcus Aurelius Prudentius, Translated From Latin With An Introduction, Peter Johnson
The Psychomachia By Marcus Aurelius Prudentius, Translated From Latin With An Introduction, Peter Johnson
English Faculty Publications
This Masters thesis is an introduction to and prose translation of Prudentius’s Psychomachia. In the introduction, besides discussing personification allegory, I suggest that the synthesis of classical and Christian elements in the Psychomachia is a response to the historical phenomena of the times. The conflict between the Christian and pagan elements is important because it mirrors the action of the poem itself, in which the soul tries to cope with the presence of two battling opposite forces: the Virtues and the Vices. This internalized soul conflict is a personalized representation of 4th Century Church history, during which intellectuals …

A Jungian Interpretation Of The Tempest, Tana Smith
A Jungian Interpretation Of The Tempest, Tana Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The following psychological interpretation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is unique to articles on the same subject which have appeared in literary journals because it applies a purely Jungian reading to the characters in the play. Here each character is shown to represent one of the archetypes which Jung described in his book Archetypes ~ the Collective Unconscious. In giving the play a psychological interpretation, the action must be seen to occur inside Prospera's own unconscious mind. He is experiencing a psychic transformation or what Jung called the individuation process, where a person becomes "a separate, indivisible unity or whole" and …

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque
Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
May Swenson's poetry contains four major image patterns: (1) sexual/sensual, (2) birth, (3) plant and (4) animal. These patterns work together to support a single unifying theme in Swenson's work: respect for all forms of life and for the natural world. This thesis devotes one chapter to each specific pattern. Chapter two analyzes sexual/sensual imagery which emphasizes the need for mutual respect in sexual relationships as well as for respect for the natural environment. This pattern is divided into three subcategories: (1) sexual/sensual imagery supporting themes dealing specifically with sexual roles and relationships, (2) sexual/sensual imagery celebrating the sexuality of …
L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble
L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble
Masters Theses
L. Frank Baum, throughout his books of fantasy, especially the Oz series, gradually resolves the conflict of pastoralism and technology by developing a technology managed by love. Baum uses magic as a representation of both pastoralism and technology. Fairy magic, the capacity for love, represents pastoralism, and ritual magic, the capacity for good or evil depending upon who wields it, represents technology. Baum deals with the ways in which ritual magic or technology can be misused through selfishness and ignorance and points out how destruction can be avoided if technology were managed by not greed for power and money but …
The Rite Of Initiation In Pinter's The Birthday Party, Richard C. Slocum
The Rite Of Initiation In Pinter's The Birthday Party, Richard C. Slocum
Masters Theses
The paper is an attempt to give full treatment to elements in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party which suggest the rite of initiation practiced in primitive societies. A few critics have touched upon the subject of initiation in the play, but they fail to discuss it in detail.
Extensive comparisons are made between Charles Eckert's summary of initiation rituals and the actions and characters in the play. The initiate is isolated from society as a preliminary to the rite of initiation; Stanley is isolated in a seaside boarding house. The initiate is secluded in a dark and threatening place; Stanley …
George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal
George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
While George Meredith's sixteen-line sonnet sequence Modern Love fits neatly into his philosophical, triadic system of Blood, Brain, and Spirit,1 the neatness of this correspondence should not cause us to ignore other complementary systems that inform and expand the poem. A careful reading of Modern: Love will expose a consistent allusion to the biblical myth of Adam and Eve, an allusion which adds a grand, universalized dimension to the poem's focused drama. Meredith has re-interpreted the myth to fit his own evaluation of love; moreover, the imagery of Modern Love, as it transforms the original myth, allows us to …

The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix
The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study takes seriously the claim made by William Blake in his epic poem Milton that the model for his art was the Bible, especially the works of those "more ancient & consciously & professedly inspired Men," the Hebrew prophets. Through an examination of circumstances surrounding the composition of Blake's "first Vision of Light," and through analysis of the poem itself, it is shown not only that Blake was acquainted with certain conventional patterns and formulae from the biblical prophetic tradition, but also that he drew upon his knowledge of such strategies in this short poem enclosed in a letter …
The Effects Of Encouragement, Praise, And Discouragement On Internally And Externally Oriented Children, Judith A. Anderson
The Effects Of Encouragement, Praise, And Discouragement On Internally And Externally Oriented Children, Judith A. Anderson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary aim of this study was to investigate three types of parent communication--encouragement, praise, and discouragement--with regard to feelings elicited and perceived helpfulness, as reported by fifth- and sixth-grade subjects grouped according to high, medium, or low locus of control. Subjects for the study were 37 male and 47 female volunteers. Bialer•s Children•s Locus of Control Scale was used to classify males and females into a high (internal), medium (middle range), or low (external) group. Encouragement, praise, and discouragement were operationally defined as those responses receiving total agreement from a panel of experts as representing the Adlerian concepts under …

Ben Jonson And The Traditions Of The Clever Servant, Ellen C. Dowling
Ben Jonson And The Traditions Of The Clever Servant, Ellen C. Dowling
English Language and Literature ETDs
The intriguing clever servant has had a long and profitable life on the popular stage. In this study I examine two of the most important clever servants, Ben Jonson's Mosca and Face, by measuring them against the Roman, Italian, and native English methods of presenting this archetypal figure. In both Volpone and The Alchemist, which are considered Jonson's masterpieces, the plot, the exposition of satire, and the theatrical brilliance which guarantees their continued popularity depend to a great extent on the machinations of characters who, while inferior in social position, yet demonstrate superior wit, cunning, and--above all--the ability to promote …

Fondling The Brave Hello: Selected Poems Of William Pearlman, William Pearlman
Fondling The Brave Hello: Selected Poems Of William Pearlman, William Pearlman
English Language and Literature ETDs
Fondling the Brave Hello is a collection of poems covering the poet's experience in four distinct regions of the country. California, the poet's place of birth, is the lead section, with athletics the prime concern of the poems. Oregon, the place of the poet's marriage and the place where his daughter was born, is the second zone. Louisiana, where the poet and his family settled, is the third energized region explored. And lastly, the special place where the poet returns for spiritual nutrition, New Mexico, is brought to light in all its radiant possibility. There is a kind of exuberance …

The Priest In Gulliver's Travels, Mary Virginia Green Mathews
The Priest In Gulliver's Travels, Mary Virginia Green Mathews
English Theses & Dissertations
Dr. Jonathan Swift was a priest of the Church of England. For a sermon, he wrote: "I look upon myself, in the capacity of Clergyman, to be appointed by providence for defending a post assigned me, and for gaining over as many enemies as I can." He is ever-present in the role of priest in Gulliver's Travels. The Anglican Church is a State Church. For centuries it has taught profound truths through ritual and symbolism. Dr. Swift used Christian symbolism and political allegory in Gulliver's Travels, being fully aware that his contemporary readers would perceive and understand the underlying dimension …
