The Dark Is A Door, Susan Strayer Deal Jan 1984

The Dark Is A Door, Susan Strayer Deal

Ahsahta Press

Susan Strayer Deal’s collection The Dark Is a Door is an austere work born of Nebraska’s dry prairie landscape. The ferocity of seasons—the bone-dry summer heat, the relentless indifference of winter—and the ever persistent scouring of prairie winds lead to a land, and a poetry, stripped of adornment. It is a landscape of distances where the animate and inanimate are not easily distinguishable, the hard ground converging with whatever might move upon it. Deal’s poetry pulls shape from this vastness, a quiet attestation of the poet’s commitment to seeing what is there, to define from dark earth forms and images …

Deer In The Haystack, Dixie Partridge Jan 1984

Deer In The Haystack, Dixie Partridge

Ahsahta Press

Dixie Partridge’s first book, Deer in the Haystacks, is amazingly unified in theme and style. She writes of her past without lapsing into nostalgia; her sense of time is less literal and more experiential, and the past and present often fuse into one. Although she does not write solely of death and the cold of Wyoming, these subjects are rarely far away. These poems display a strong sense of craft and of Partridge’s understanding that what is left unsaid is often as important as that which is said.

The Semantics Of Desire: Changing Models Of Identity From Dickens To Joyce, Philip M. Weinstein Jan 1984

The Semantics Of Desire: Changing Models Of Identity From Dickens To Joyce, Philip M. Weinstein

English Literature Faculty Works

This work examines the dialectic of desire and value, as it affects the protagonist's identity, in fiction from Dickens and George Eliot through Hardy and Conrad to Lawrence and Joyce. Philip Weinstein describes the growing sexualization of the imagined body--the transformation of the protagonistic self from a figure defined by semantics, signification, and cultural value to one characterized by desire, force, and natural impulse.

Progress, Process And The Critique Of Development: The Interplay Of Gender And Genre In The Morgesons, Janet E. Graber Jan 1984

Progress, Process And The Critique Of Development: The Interplay Of Gender And Genre In The Morgesons, Janet E. Graber

Honors Papers

Elizabeth Barstow Stoddard's work received little public attention or critical acclaim during her lifetime. Only now, more than a hundred years after her best work was completed, has Stoddard begun to find an enthusiastic audience. Stoddard wanted badly the success which eluded her, yet she was not willing to sacrifice her intellectual and artistic integrity in order to sell books. She had only contempt for the countless women writers of her day, "the tribe of intellectual gardeners and vegetable growers," who gained widespread popularity with their frothy, ornate, and romantic fiction. She wanted to be seen as a consequential and …

Madeline Neroni And The Moral Design Of Barchester Towers, Jennifer A. Low Jan 1984

Madeline Neroni And The Moral Design Of Barchester Towers, Jennifer A. Low

Honors Papers

The first half of this paper will trace Neroni's development from the unlikely caricature of a siren to the rounded, believable narrator's accomplice whose position establishes her own credibility. Neroni serves to reinforce and augment the implications of the narrative whenever she holds court with her suitors. As "the Circe of Barchester" (Kn 37 1), she leads her lovers into revealing those traits that the narrator has already warned us to expect, thereby providing the narrator with further text to comment upon. Trollope needs to reveal certain aspects of his men, not in their inward deliberation, but in startled reactions …

Social Ethics In The Novels Of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alison A. Case Jan 1984

Social Ethics In The Novels Of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alison A. Case

Honors Papers

Harriet Beecher Stowe has engendered a good deal of critical contradiction, both in her own time and since. Most of more extreme controversy centers on her popular and influential anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Although the New England novels are generally considered to have some merit as examples of "local color" fiction, Stowe earned her place in the canon of American literature primarily on the basis her authorship of UTC. But the place is an uneasy one. UTC's popularity and impact make it too big an event in American literary history for it, or its author, to be disregarded, but …

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks Jan 1984

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks

Honors Papers

In this paper, I hope to examine Merwin's ultimately successful quest for such a language and such a myth. Beginning with a brief description of his early work, in which the problem of language becomes a seemingly insuperable barrier to an understanding of the world, I wish to demonstrate his gradual evolution of a poetic voice which is both contemporary and universal. Of course, a study of this length will inevitably be marred by a certain amount of over-generalization and simplification. Merwin's struggle with language has been a long and arduous one, and he has explored many byways on the …

Social Drama, Rites Of Passage, And The Winter's Tale, Aaron Zitner Jan 1984

Social Drama, Rites Of Passage, And The Winter's Tale, Aaron Zitner

Honors Papers

No matter how you explain it away, the jealousy of Leontes is a violent affair. When he blurts out "Too hot, too hot!/To mingle friendships far, is mingling bloods" we are surprised at both the suddenness of his onslaught of jealousy and at the vehemence with which he repudiates our expectations of seeing a happy family, set up in the first scene of the play. Before looking for explanations for this outburst -- for they range from psychological analyses of the king' s fear of women to assertions that Hermione indeed appears guilty -- I would first like to consider …

An Analysis Of Six Months Of Juvenile Book Reviewing By Four Major Reviewing Sources, Marilyn Weber Jan 1984

An Analysis Of Six Months Of Juvenile Book Reviewing By Four Major Reviewing Sources, Marilyn Weber

Graduate Research Papers

This study was based on Zena Sutherland's 1965 research of review coverage of juvenile books by School Library Journal, Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and Horn Book. Sutherland's research analyzed twelve months of reviewing by the selected sources for the purpose of determining the number of titles reviewed by all four of the reviewing sources, by three of the four reviewing sources, by two of the four reviewing sources, and by only one of the four reviewing sources. The representation of nonfiction and fiction titles was also analyzed by Sutherland. This research study adopted the same objectives …
