The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein Apr 1984

The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein

English

Much recent American fiction has become increasingly self-conscious, displaying an awareness of itself as fiction, as artifice that diminishes the role of a central human consciousness or self in the fiction. The fictional process is in the foreground of much contemporary fiction where the narrative human presence once was. Yet, both fictional process and human presence serve similar structural functions within the text, which suggests that the creation of a fiction resembles the creation of a human self, real or imaginary. The provisional reality of self-conscious fiction is like the provisional reality of the "post-modern" self, prone to self-questioning, constituted …

"Who Can Rule And Dare Not Lie": Tennyson's Bicameral King, Judith Weissman Jan 1984

"Who Can Rule And Dare Not Lie": Tennyson's Bicameral King, Judith Weissman

Syracuse Scholar (1979-1991)

Tennyson's poetry is pervaded by the kinds of auditory hallucinations that Julian Jaynes describes in The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Tennyson begins in a late stage of Jaynes's history, with the voices of demons, and moves backward to Jaynes's point of origin, the admonitory voice of the tribal king .

Tootsie, Feminism, And The Modern Self, C. Roland Wagner Jan 1984

Tootsie, Feminism, And The Modern Self, C. Roland Wagner

Syracuse Scholar (1979-1991)

The movie Tootsie not only reflects increasing American tolerance of androgyny in both men and women, but also celebrates an old-fashioned ideal of self-discipline, an ideal implicit in a male incarcerating himself within the prison of femininity and learning from it . It is an achievement of the modernist temper.

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Suicide In Adolescent Literature, Roxanne Fox Jan 1984

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Suicide In Adolescent Literature, Roxanne Fox

Graduate Research Papers

The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of adolescent suicidal characters in books which adolescents are currently reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic in the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayal of ten characters from the ten books were analyzed using an inventory of nine elements which were derived from a review of the literature currently discussing characteristics of adolescent suicide.
